Some BLU advice if you please.

Going as BLU for first time to Proto-Ultima tonight and wanted to make sure of what spells to set.

The obvious ones are of course:

    Head Butt
    Temporal Shift
    Plasma Charge
    Actinic Burst
    Diamondhide
    Refueling
    Cannonball
    Disseverment
    Vertical Cleave
    Saline Coat
    Magic Fruit
    Cocoon

Where I am unsure of is which defense down spell to use that would work best.

Gear wise I am fine so there isn't an issue there. Curious though which food to use as well. Tav Taco's for the defense build on Cannonball? Sushi for the accuracy even though I do have 4 sword merits and BLU magic merits?

    Advice?

you should be blu/thf, eat tacos. Forget spells like refueling, head butt, Disseverment, etc, as you should never be in melee range of ultima. Just sit back, and SA Cannonball every minute (CA every 2 minutes). Spells set should include:
    Cannonball (duh)
    Cocoon (duh)
Saline Coat and Vertical Cleave (for Defense Bonus and VIT stats)
Diamondhide (to be nice to the other DDs in your party)
Frightful Roar (best defense down spell)
then the rest as many STR and VIT stat spells as you can cram in.

Not sure about BLU, but he's not very evasive at all and easy to hit on PLD without Sushi.

Not sure if you should melee or not, we let our melee in on him full-time except right before CB so we can rest up and knock him down from 21%-dead quickly, BRD+WHM or RDM in the melee PT are able to keep up with any AOEs that get off and keep everyone alive.

If you want to do something more than just SAing or head butt spamming, Breaths don't seem to resist very often on him and can help in Physical Shield mode.

I go BLU/NIN and do self-distortion for the BLMs to MB off of. One great thing about BLU in that fight is that Head Butt will stun him through Mana Screen. I'm sure BLU/THF does decent damage on it, but I prefer to go support with self-chains and keeping Diamondhide up. As long as you keep shadows up the only AoE that will hit you is Armor Buster (I stand to be corrected, it has been a while since I've fought Ultima...) which Diamondhide will eat a good amount of. So being in melee range is not a problem.

I recommend Exuviation to get rid of Gravity so you don't have to depend on a mage to Erase you for when CB starts counting down.

I think the only time I should allow myself to come BLU in PU is when I'm gonna tank it.

If someone has a good zerg job, I probably they go w/ for the last 20% HP.

dont cannonball what you wanna do is vertical cleave buff your strength and SPAM headbutt its probably his biggest weakness and theres a 99% he wont build resistance and they'll always land. ice breath and heat breath are great when he resists physical. Blue mages should always be on the top of dps since they can always damage.

Ok. Lets get to #1 - Best defense down spell. Frightful roar vs. low Wind resist mobs. Infransonics vs. Light mobs. Seedspray vs. everything else. They even stack!

Your sword skill will have almost the same effect on yoru BLu magic as your BLU magic skill will. Ever try head butting a EP with a staff? Sword will add to damage and accuracy. Blu will add also to both.

    Spells you dont need.
Salenes coat= Usefull if you are diffusion to a party. Otherwise not so good.
Diamondhide = great in party! solo... not so much, just use metallic body. Cannonball has good stats added with it, so its almost a main set, plus its a ranged attack.

Temperal shift, not so good, doesnt stick on lots of mobs, and a big MP burner. Not useful excpet in ISNM partys.

Virtical cleave. Not such a good one, only if /thf is this worth setting.

If you run outta useful spells that you actually use and are actually helping, then just try and set maybe Heat Breath for that +3 str mod, or others that will help out with that.

My usual 100% BLU/NIN set is as follows

    Uppercut
    head butt
    Hysterica Barrage
    Frenetic Rip
    Disseverment
    Refueling
    Metallic Body
    Cocoon
    Plasma Charge
    Actinic Burst
    Cannonball
    Magic Fruit
    Heat Breath

This is for DD style BLU. You must set your spells in accordance to what you are doing. DEF down spells are great to set in an alliance situation because they will stack with Dia and other DEF down traits. Blank gaze is a great one if you are needing to dispel mobs, that or geist wall but that is more aoe instead of cone so you would have to use accordingly.

If you are planning to make a cannonball setup you need this in mind. ALL gear should be +STR. Dont worry about +VIT unless this is your only option. +4 vit would be less than +1 STR. Remember this when setting spells also. If you are doing HNM dont set diamond hide, dont set refresh spells, just set STR+ STR+ STR+. Tav tacos a must, and cocoon before you cast is also great. You run in CASA as we call it (Chain affinity / Sneak Attack) Cannonball. Then run away, wait for CASA to be back again and do the same thing. Ive seen a lot of people fail at making proper cannonball builds, and you could make a good one for very cheap. +STR rings, Minuet earring, Ifrits blade, Shield, Shell ranged, BLu body af, blu AFv2 legs, RSE feet, pallas mitts, smildion mantle. ect..

The thing is, you dont have to worry about accuracy, because sneak attack takes care of that. Just max out STR.

Side not, BLUE MAGIC ACCURACY doesnt effect whatsoever the melee spells, only the spells that have color accordance. It is a pretty worthless idea unless you were planning on a breath build, which could also be insane if you had the right stuff. If your interested in a breath build lemme know, i'll help you with that too if you like my ideas. They work well for me, and im sure they will for you. 1800+ CASA kirin.

*EDIT* After fully reading your post i recommend this.. My cannonball build. People dont want lots of TP added to omega, unless its ur Airship fight. I'd leave headbutt alone, and just go ahead and drop that DD till it gets low, then headbutt spam.. USually people like to farm the pods that eject from him. so adding tp this way and also stunning him is a good call.. Just make sure you DONT headbutt Pod Ejection... Ive seen it happen, and its not a good thing. GL with your Appolyon

As for my ls when we do Ultima Dissevernment is used to keep poison on ultima and I tend to equip Seedspray and Spiral Spin for defense down, acc down and frightfull roar does get resisted. But i agree with the other posters for purpose and spells.

That's your A+ sword talking (and I'd assume meritted as well). Blu only has A-, and she only has 4 merits on top of that. I'd eat sushi if you're going to melee him, because yes he actually is kind of evasive (noticeable on a GA war with capped merits eating meat, typically 80-90%ish acc).

I've never gone blu to ultima (not a chance with having a good war and a good blm as other options), but I've seen what they can do. Head butt spam is very nice, diss poison is good but don't spam it because of the tp feed, just use it every time the poison wears off. Other than that, anything else pertinent has been said I think.

    Edit: Spelling

If your worried about tp feed from disservment then just dont equip as much acc gear to reduce your chance as landing more hits. You should only need 1 hit out of the 5 to land to apply its poison effect.
Edit: easiest way to do this is just swap to a str set up with staff and sa disservment every 3 mintues which is about how long it last's.
(1000/17=59 tics or about 177 seconds so 3 minutes is almost dead on)

Unrelated, but does Disseverment's poison work on Ixion by any chance?
I was surprised to see Frightful Roar landing consistantly without Wind/Auster staff despite its incredible resistance to debuffs so...

Returning to the topic's subject, either tank Ultima as blu/nin with appropriate support or go blu/thf using Cball and breaths when physical shield is on. In my experience DD blu/nin doesn't work well because of Ultima's high resistance to physical spells not named buffed-up Cannonball and due the fact you end up being a MP sink more than else thanks to its various aoe moves.
