I'll be running my own fantasy league again this year - $20 buy with a unique scoring system (yards per carry/reception/attempt scale, no milestone bonuses, unique k/def scoring - I'm a stats dork). Tyche was in it last year and I think he had a good time.

    OWait, that already happened.

speaking of fantasy FB, I've hit homeruns on rookie RBs in the last 3 years...Marion Barber, Adrian Peterson, and Matt Forte. All taken 4th round or later. Hopefully I can do the same this year!

I think Beaine Wells is the big wildcard RB this year. He could either have a huge season with a lot of TDs or be an afterthought to the Cards passing game.

Hopefully they learned a little thing or two about balancing pass/rush with their success on the ground in the post season.

    Somehow I doubt it...

Edit: Looking at the stats they were definitely a different team post season. During the regular season their opponents rushed for nearly 600 more yrds total. Post season they ran for about 70 more yrds than their opponents. It's amazing the things you can do with your passing game if teams have to respect the run.

Yeah, I can throw out meaningless bullshit stats too, nobody cares that they had a bad game and you can "average" that out with a good game to make them look like they played them terribly all year when they beat them 1 of the 2 games.

So you're saying Favre was the reason why TJ had a productive season last year? lol. I guess that shows just how much you guys know about Thomas Jones....

Thomas Jones rushing totals over the past 5 years (and starting QB):

950 (No QB. Grossman was injured the whole year)
    1335 (Orton)
    1210 (Grossman)
    1119 (pennington for 8 games)
    1312 (Farve)

Thomas Jones had a solid season last year because they signed Alan Faneca, and their younger studs mangold, d'brickawall furgeson, and brandon moore were getting better every week.

When a guy posts 5 straight 1,000 yard seasons all under shitty QB situations, you think people would give him a little more respect. Now I'm not saying that he's the best thing since sliced bread, but coupled with an above average line, a great complementary backup, and a solid defense that allows him to chew up clock? I'd say he's one of the safest bets in the league.
He's a 30 year old back that's been behind great lines pretty much his entire career and has had 1 50 yard run since like his 25th birthday.

Is he solid? Sure. Will he *EVER* be part of "one of the best 1-2 punches" as a starter? Not a chance in hell.

You realize when you say "one of the best 1-2 punches," you're putting him in league with LT+Sproles, CJ and White, Jacobs+Bradshaw (hi2u 5.0 ypc on both ends of the duo), hell even Peterson + Taylor are miles above as a pair.

Oh you mean players like Kris Jenkins, Shaun Ellis, Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard, Lito Sheppard, Calvin Pace, or Darell Revis?

Yeah they suck. Just go back to sleep.
Jenkins is a 29 year old 350 pounder entering his 10th year, Ellis is 31.

So they signed 3 people and had one back that are in the "prime" of their career. Only 18 more to go!

I never said anything about the quality of players, you tried to describe a team chock full of 30+ and <25 players as "in the prime of their career," nice attempted redirection there, though.

Honestly, as far as the Jets are concerned, they had a chance to be very good this year.

Unfortunately for them, it went to the Bears.

No love for Williams/Stewart? 5.5/4.5 ypc with 28 TDs combined, 1,515/836 total yrds. Both are capable of 30+ yrd runs. They made that abundantly clear last season, lol.

The added bonus. Stewart was a rookie. Williams was in his 3rd year. They're still kids.

This is the tandem to watch this year, and years to come.

In other words, I completely agree with you, but had to show some Panthers love for one of the deadliest RB tandems the league has seen in years.

In the first game they played, Brady had more SB rings than Cassel had career starts. And I'm not trying to make it look like the Dolphins played them terribly, I was stating that they won't be winning the division title like they did last year if they barely won a tie breaker against the Pats+Backup QB.

    1. So he's 30. Big whoop. Like you noted, Thomas Jones never relied on his speed to get past defenders, so what's the difference now? The reason why guys like LT are struggling post 30 is because they have to relearn how to shed would be tacklers without a quick step/explosiveness. (one of the first things a RB loses with age) TJ has remained extremely healthy over recent years and has never made magic on the 2nd level anyway, so what's the difference now? There's nothing saying that he won't be able to fulfill the same role as an up the gut runner.

    2. I never said they were prolific, I simply stated that you shouldn't sleep on them just because they have a rookie at QB. The jets were 9th in rushing last year and with an improved line/defense, who's to say that they won't get better? Especially now that Leon Washington is getting ready for a breakout season during a contract year. And with precedents like the Titans/Young, Falcons/Ryan, Baltimore/Flacco, it isn't like it's impossible to win with good running and solid defensive play; all of which the Jets possess with their improved line, and defensive minded head coach.

I know I'm about a page late, but am I the only one who actually had fun watching Favre play for the Packers, and Jets to an extent ._.

Although I'm a Pats fan, watching Farve play was always pretty exciting to watch, like his game in the 2007-08 playoffs, with that stumbling handoff in the snow that pretty much won the game for the Packs against the Seahawks lol

No doubt he was fun to watch.

It's all this off the field dramarama that's getting on everyone's nerves.

You're forgetting the part where last year was the first season after going 1-15 the year before.

Now, obviously I'm not dumb enough to assume they'd continue the same rate of progression. However, I'm also not dumb enough to believe for a second they aren't going to be dramatically improved again.

I thought I'd already said it, but I'm not thinking they're going to pass up the Pats outright. I do, however, think they're good enough to be competitive with them, and if they can avoid the bad games (like the 2nd pats game), they can definitely compete for a wild card, and potentially compete for the division provided the pats aren't going insane for 14+ wins with Brady back.

    Jamal Lewis
    Christian Okoye
    Bus
Mike Alsott (<3 if you get that)
    etc. etc.

Big backs just don't last, and when they do manage to extend their career, it's through goal line and short yardage carries, not through being the feature guy.

Mark my words, he won't be the Jets' #1 guy by the end of this year.

    2. I never said they were prolific, I simply stated that you shouldn't sleep on them just because they have a rookie at QB. This is, obviously, what they're going for.

But they don't have a Ryan, a Flacco, or a Collins (I'm so not falling for that). They have Brian Griese part deux and Matt Leinart #2 coming in.

And, as a Chiefs watcher, I can assure you shoring up your defense isn't as simple as going out and signing new guys in every position that look awesome on other teams. I believe there's a Cardinals fan or 2 around that can back me up on this as well.

What it comes down to, to me, is that they don't have a truly effective game-winner.

    Here is there non-conference schedule:

Texans, Titans, Saints, Raiders, Jags, Panthers, Bucs, Falcons, Colts, Bengals.

With a run the ball, work the clock, and play defense style... not a damn one of those is a gimmie. Even the Bungles have the potential to pick up a couple cheap td's and destroy that entire game plan, and it's exactly what the Raiders and Bucs are built to perform against.

So if they get down even 1 score, where do they turn? A 30 year old 2 down back? A QB that can't get the ball to the 2 decent receivers they do have?

I have faith in the Jets' management right now, they made the right plays last year and things just didn't pan out. They have no intention of truly competing this year, I think, and will be devoted to trying to figure out how soon Sanchez is going to work, and if it's going to be a couple years, making a move (possibly mid-season, more likely next off-season) for someone that can come in and win games until he's ready to come in.

I simply have to believe if they were really focused on winning right now, they'd have been just plain beyond aggressive in the Cutler situation.

It's unfortunate Pennington never got to play with such a stacked defense and a fully healthy line with CMart around. If those 2 at their primes were in that backfield right now, they'd be Super Bowl contenders. Cutler alone would have absolutely been instant SB credibility as well.

Oh and I'm gonna ridill post this cuz that post was long and rambly.

First take or some shit the other day was discussing the Favre thing, and someone said him joining the Vikings would make that the best QB division in the league if Stafford is good in his rookie season.

The others replied well, it would make them good, but definitely not the best.

Favre, Cutler, Rodgers, and an above average 4th in Stafford (this discussion is with the assumption that Stafford plays well right away).

What division has a better set of 4?

Stafford more than likely isn't even going to play this season...

As much as they've struggled, I don't think even DET is stupid enough to throw him in as a starter his rookie year. He'd get fucking rocked.

Edit: Smart teams sit rookie QBs on the bench for at least a season so they have more time to adjust to the NFL. It's incredibly rare to see a rookie QB start right out of the gate.

lol. Still, the Jets are far more likely to start Sanchez than the Lions are to start Stafford.

I'm surprised whatever show you were watching even considered Stafford as a starter.

It was more hypothetical discussion fodder than anything.

They were probably trying to direct into a discussion of "are the NFC East qb's really that good."
