Sports Threads

The only annoying thing about sports in General has been the aforementioned UFC threads, and I'm probably only saying that due to my disdain for the sport itself. Everything else seems to have been handled adequately. I really don't understand the BAWWWWWing over the NFL threads, there's clearly enough discussion week to week to warrant it, and every other sport is one thread per season or postseason. I also think some events (All-star games, NFL draft, etc.) deserve separate threads, there's no reason to police sports threads other than to save people who don't know what they are a few clicks.

Please don't subforum this, General will become fark.com news stories (plus random image/fuck or duck) very quickly.

I skipped over most of this thread because it's late, but my 2 cents is that there are never more Sports threads then are needed. There's usually just one per sport per season, the exception being the NFL which has a game thread each week, with all discussion contained within that. Sports fans on this forum aren't numerous enough - nor are there enough threads - to warrant making a subsection. I don't think anything has to be changed.

I think it's fine as it was, this new rule feels rather restrictive even though I don't participate in the sports threads. I would just enforce a stricter naming policy as has been mentioned earlier in the thread.

I find it absolutely hilarious that people are QQing so hard for this sticky to even be up here. Every sport has been doing one/thread a season with exception of the NFL and UFC. The NFL has one thread die every week and UFC only has a thread pop up whenever they do a PPV which is like what -- one/month at most (I don't follow MMA so I have no idea)?

The only other time additional sports threads come up are for organization of fantasy games and it is a lot easier to keep track of that seperately (since we use passwords) as well as seperate discussions if need be since it is a completely different topic.

But whatever, subforum it/make us create obsenely huge threads/take it to spam. I think this BAWWW session is funny as all hell.

Yeah, no matter how it's done, there's always going to end up being a thread for the sport on the front page. If football was just limited to one thread, it'd be near the top of the page for 1/2 the year constantly anyway, so a one-thread solution doesn't really change anything with regards to clearing up the front page. I'd like to know what truly brought up the need to go to one thread, so I/we wouldn't have to speculate about the causes

Is it really THAT annoying to have to see an appropriately named sports thread and not click on it? It's not like people are making threads for every play. There's 2/3 a week tops, and that's including pretty much all the sports.

Perhaps a compromise would be one thread per sport in General Discussion, then a subforum for more in-depth topics that require their own thread?

I personally like seeing the occasional sports threads that are genuine news discussions in GD, things like major drug scandals, the Vick thing, they're definitely worth their own threads in GD imo.

Really not worth it, there aren't enough of either (thread per sport, or topics worthy of seperate discussion) per year to warrant a sub-forum. There's be like 10 topics in there per year, total. Large scandals don't come around that often. Everything else is minor enough to mention briefly in the season thread. Even if a thread was made for every sport and another for fantasy, it wouldn't fill a forum. I honestly don't think a compromise is needed, I don't see how a few sport threads in general is such a problem.

I don't really understand the need or what exactly is needing to be accomplished. I was hoping Sono would reply with something, as to why or how. The OP a little too vague to really run with, especially when it presents several questionable issues regarding threads related to sports but not encompassing a season discussion (such as controversies, contests/fantasy, and other various relating news stories). If you do change it, I think it has to be all or nothing. You leave it to people to judge on what sports story is worthy of GD and what would need to be put in a sub-forum, it could get messy.

I think I may have been unclear, I meant the scandals should be in GD itself, not in a subforum. I would personally leave shit as it was before, the subforum suggestion is to placate those crying the loudest.

Seriously... like was said earlier, we're talking about 20-25 NFL threads each year, never with more than 2 being on the front page of General at a single time. Why are we even talking about this given BG's thread volume? This thread is a bigger waste than any of the NFL threads. As for all of the other sports that pale in comparison to the NFL, there's one thread each year. So all-in-all, we're talking about -maybe- 40 threads in General Discussion. I'm sorry some people are so butthurt at the prospect of professional/collegiate sports being discussed in General to even merit starting this discussion. =/ It's monumentally stupid.

And aren't topics such as sports ("anything non-FFXI") the original purpose of General anyway? If we subforum the fuck out everything at this current rate, General might as well be spam+random image+fuck/duck, and there will be a subforum for even the most niche of topics. >.>; It's fine how it is, imo.

Isn't there a ton of traffic in the spam section? One issue might be that us sports guys might miss a thread due to the number of people posting random threads about how their feelings got hurt while playing Scrabble.

I think a subforum might be a good idea. Trying to make one thread for an entire football season is crazy. Same goes for College Bball. It could get really messy during the conference tournaments and March Madness. Realistically you can expect the football thread to be 300+ pages, easy.

I really don't see a problem with an appropriately named thread so that people don't have to QQ about clicking on it thinking its something else. Possibly come up with a format to follow? Might solve a few problems. But what do I know. I'm just a guy with a Bernard King sig.
