Get a 2900XT instead of the HD3650. It should be cheaper than the 3650 and much, much faster.
Yes though, that card would play L4D with no issues whatsoever.

Before buying a video card, make sure your know if your motherboard has a PCI express slot or not. Your motherboard manual should have this info(or you can post its model, etc here and I can look it up).
About a GFX card.. Tom's Hardware has an excellent hardware buyer's guide. ( Best Graphics Cards For The Money: Feb. '09 : January Review/February Updates - Review Tom's Hardware ) I'd personally recommend HD 4830 assuming that you are not willing to spend more than 200 bucks.
Anything lower (i.e. HD3650) should be considered as a short-term measure if you are in a very tight budget or under hardware limitations.
I am going to echo that you should get a new decent video card that will last you for another year. Check out newegg, you really don't want to find out that it is obsolete and can't play any latest games in 6 months. I will recommend most card that's 8800GTX+, around or under $150.

If you have a RS420, from what I could find ( Sony eSupport - PCV-RS420 - Manuals / Specs / Warranty ) > Marketing Specifications > "Expansion Slots" > it looks like your mobo does not have a PCI-E slot.
In this case, unless you are planning to make a costly upgrade(mobo, etc), your choices will be limited to Best Gaming Graphics Cards For The Money: AGP Interface - Review Tom's Hardware : Best Graphics Cards For The Money: Jan.
