This is why women belong in the kitchen, she would have had access to all the knives to prevent this.

when the nerves in the spinal cord are severed you can't feel anything but I suppose you could still hear him hacksawing his way through your spine until you bled out

Eh, I'm thinking he went throat-first, so she'd be dead by the time he was doing much hacking at spinal cords and such.

they say that after a beheading the blood in the head is able to keep it 'alive' for up to 20 seconds.

So sometimes after a beheading, the killer would pick the head up and show the head it's now dead body. Insult to injury? Last minute psychological raping?

When a priest is caught playing patty-cake with a 6 year old boy, do people blame it on Christianity? Or when a priest, forget what his name was, but he was a gay-basher and was caught having phone sex with a dude. And now his church says he's been through gay-reversal therapy via Christianity.

This is fucked up and I'm trying to understand what the fuck would drive this guy to behead his own wife. Usually, when this stuff happens I can bring in the obvious socio-economic variables that affect a person's behavior.

I remember watching a debate on Islam. It was Reza Azlan if anyone's heard of him, and some other person VS. a muslim author (not that one annoying bitch and you'll know who I'm talking about instantly; her name escapes me at the moment) and a christian dude.

Anyways, in this debate the speaker from the 'Islam needs to reform' side made a good point:

They weren't saying all of Islam is bad but that the 'problem' with Islam is with the patriarchy and how that affects everything else i.e. treatment of women and violence. Like, this dude was a father and husband. I'm guessing his wife disrespected him like forgot the mayo on his chicken sandwich or something.

All bad jokes aside, I think she had a point. I don't think these Islam-bashing people are ALL wrong. It's their INTENT that I don't like. I think they genuinely hate Muslims the same way people hate Jews. Like 'Jews control the world' sorta thing. Where you conflate 1 situation (relatively speaking) with every member of the group.

So, this thing sucks and it's horrible. I do think this is an example of oppressive patriarchy though. And a religion can enable that behavior.

Let's just take a moment to reflect on our own history: many Southern slave-owners justified the enslavement of Africans because they were the 'Children of Ham'.

    EDIT:

And I agree with that quote as well: 'a text is only as moral as its reader'.

Someone post Guartz's famous "Blowing yourself up is a natural reaction to stress" quote. I wonder what he thinks about this one.

It's true, if ur head is sliced off you should be able to react and actually look at ur limp body for a few seconds. At least she is one of those ppl who can say her body went before her mind... on wait...

Unless he starts pointing at some part of Islam that commanded him to do it, he's just a nutjob that happened to also be a Muslim.
If it was a video game player who did it, then that'd be the argument. Plenty of people happy to be the Jack Thompsons of religion bashing I guess.

The Muslim speaker, Dr. Rashied Omar, said something that stuck out and that was "a text is only as moral as its reader" in response to an audience question about the repeated use of the term "infidel" in the Qur'an.

Probably mostly irrelevant, but this topic reminded me of that quote, and if more people followed that line of thinking, ignorant rednecks wouldn't be calling radio stations and calling for a ban on Islam. Just saying.
You're right, if more muslims thought that way we wouldn't have these problems.

People understand superficial emotional 'truths' much easier than substantiated analysis. So if we bring up that the Arab world is dominated by corrupt dictatorships and still dealing with the effects of the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent colonialism that followed, then blah blah blah I *think* people would have a more open mind.

It's a shame really. Islam is the second most popular religion in the world and accounts for 1.8 billion followers (est.; I think). Actually, I've heard that most Muslims aren't even Arab.

Right now there's just too much going against them - 2 wars in the region vs. the world superpower + the I-P conflict + their own internal problems via terrorism and corrupt leadership = geopolitics.

In normal circumstances I would have a pretty valid comment based on something like this. But just due to the fact that this guy is who is and does what he does, the irony is really making it too difficult for me to make a noncomical comment.

It definitely is too ironic and too fucked up.

I think this incident has much more to do with cultural variables that place men above women and enables a sort of chauvinistic/patriarchal oppression.
