I use my phone pretty much exculsively for texting.
This consists of a whole one message a week to one of my friends and it normally just reads "9?" which both he and I both know is confirmation of our weekly meeting at 9pm. It works out cheaper than making a phone call and is quicker too.

You also can't overlook the inconvienience of a phone call. You have to answer it there and then. A text can be read 10 minutes later and responded to when you have a free moment.

However, I will agree that if you want to have a full blown conversation, then making a call is much simpler and effective.

On another note, using a phone while driving in the UK is illegal... and that is something I actually agree with my government on for once.

We have the same law in California and I think it's moronic, even though I almost never talk on the phone while driving. I'm not sure about the specifics of your law, but ours require a hands free device. The problem with this is that holding a phone isn't what makes talking dangerous, it's the act of talking itself that distracts you. Also, talking to someone who is in the backseat is just as, if not more, dangerous than talking to someone on the phone; should that be made illegal, too?

Disclaimer: The above rant was about talking exclusively. If you plan on texting while driving, I hope you hit a tree and have your face impaled by a branch and slowly, and painfully, bleed to death while everyone around laughs at you.

Edit: I don't understand technical terms.

The problem with contacting the parents is that the parents probably don't give a fuck. Which would be why the kid is like this in the first place.

I wish cops were called on certain kids when I used to be a teacher's aide, because all they would do is send the kid to the principal's office and then he'd show up the next day exactly the same. Because the principal can't do anything except call the parents, and they really don't care if their kid is acting up.

It's messed up that now teachers and parents can't easily discipline their kids without risking being sued. The pussification of American youth continues.

I'm disappointed in this thread (except for Khamsin's post). A 14 year old girl gets her ass searched and most everyone stays on topic. If Krye were here he wouldn't have passed up the chance at the pedo comment!

The punishment isn't too harsh, its not harsh enough. That kid disrupted class for everyone in there because the teacher had to stop, tell her to quit texting etc...what about the rest of the class having to sit there b/c that stupid bitch wouldn't do what she was asked to do.

    Wow.

In my high school, if anything was confiscated from a student, a parent/guardian had to come pick it up. If someone refused, you were escorted by a school cop to the Principle/AP..parents called in worst case scenario. They went way too far though. Not justifying her actions, dumb kid needs to learn when to not use that goddamn phone.

Forgot to mention, I also went to school in TX. School cops were the height of security, then post-Columbine, we had metal detectors for a while.

If only they had things like voicemail and answering machines. Oh wait...

I think the youth that have fallen in love with texting are just stupid and haven't realized the phone companies have found a new, exciting way to financially rape them. When you pay a similar rate to text a message as you do to make a short phone call, something is very wrong there.

$100 for a bottle of good wine, and $75 for a bottle of old garden hose water. Sure, they are both wet, drinkable, and sometimes the garden hose is faster and easier, but damn...

Let's not even go into the fact that people really don't need to be in contact with the rest of the world at all possible times always and forever, Amen. This means you too, frightened overprotective parents. Buy the damn kid a phonecard, or give him 50 cents to keep in his backpack to make an emergency phone call. If the kid can't survive without a cellphone, you have failed in successfully making a productive and successful human being. Don't try again. Also, sterilize yourself.

The only counter I would have to this is that the cell phones have gotten so bad that there are no more working payphones. When was the last time you saw one? I rarely see payphones anymore and 99% of the time when I do see one it is broken.

This is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. If the district this school is in has enough cops to spare that they can send one down to a high school to arrest a fucking 14 year old for texting during class they need to make some cuts in the police department. She was being a little shit, yes, so kick her out of class, give her detention, suspension, whatever, but having her arrested like this is fucking outrageous.

Phones clearly don't cost enough; That this many punk ass kids have them and use them as playthings is evidence enough. 12-18 year olds never have anything of consequence to say to each other, ever.

They still have several at my old grade school, and high school. I agree it's situational based on where you are, but that's still no excuse. I'd be willing to bet that many schools still have pay phones available, or will allow a child to call home in the event of an emergency (which is what these cellphones are supposedly for, right?)

If you absolutely have to, buy the kid a track phone with like 30 minutes on it, and refill as necessary. The thing wont even receive text messages, and the lack of minutes prevents the kid from making multiple unnecessary phone calls without you knowing about it.

Parents just need to get smarter, be more resourceful, and stop being lazy. If they do a good enough job as parents, they might not even need other people to discipline their children for them!

Should have just written her up and suspended her. No reason to call the cops. Or, like was said earlier, just take a %age off her grade every time he see's the phone

I agree with the track phone thing that is the best option. A phone that will only call 911 or the parents and has limited minutes and such. That would work. But even 9 years ago when I was in high school I was hard pressed to find a functioning payphone not to mention that depending on where you live there might be even less payphones. Or the fact that emergencies rarely happened near anywhere that had payphones. I guess my perspective is different because I grew up in a rather rural area that due to a couple of expensive nice hotels had cell towers but there were no payphones around.

Haha laughed harder at this then I should've.
Only problem is that due to the cell phone popularity, most of school allows student to brinig cell phone but under certain use condition. I'm still not quite sure about US here, but back in asia, most school just asking student to turn off their phone during class period until the end of school.

Probably this school also allows the student to bring it, just the girl refused to follow the rule set.

Also, don't be suprise that if 10-12 years old kids have better cell phone than yours nowadays, especially over in asia >.>

In one of my undergrad class, the prof has a cell phone rule where, "if you forgot to silence your phone and it rang during the class, you had to pay pizza for everyone in next class period".

So, we have little a total of at least 5 time free pizza while having class. Now I missed this class

This reminds my younger brother who last time got his first cell phone. When the phone bills came every month,, he spent about between 50-100 dollar just for texting, and only texting -_-
