I hardly think this makes him not anonymous, I'm fully certain that Christopher Poole or C.P. is an assumed name. After further consideration, the article mentions this fact.

This is part of the reason why moot is in debt. He does get cash from just views of ads, substantially more if people actually click and buy some shit from them. However, a lot of people block the ads entirely, myself included, but I stopped when he started asking people to unblock the ads so he can break even.

He has like 3 ads at the top of each page and 1 at the bottom, but that's because he doesn't want pop ups or ads between posts, and that's a pretty kind thing for him to do.

I never knew he's not making any money. I will click on ads now and again to help him out. It would also help if he asks for paypal donations, but it still won't solve the underlying problem that advertisers are reluctant to associate themselves with a site as notorious as 4chan.

I honestly would donate 30 bucks or something to 4chan, but moot doesn't accept donations of any kind. The 4chan FAQ states...

    How do I donate?

Unfortunately, at this time, users are unable to donate funds to 4chan. The site's content is considered too risque by most online payment processors, causing them to deny or suspend their services to us. Payment by check, cash, or money order is also not being accepted at this time.

    What keeps 4chan running smoothly?

Money. And our talented staff! But mostly—money. 4chan costs upwards of $65,000 per year to operate, so sometimes things can get a bit hairy in terms of our financial situation. Because the site is provided to the end user free of charge, we've faced many challenges over the past few years keeping the site afloat. You can help support the site by making sure you have advertisements and cookies from 4chan.org unblocked, and also by clicking ads relevant to your interests on a daily basis.

    Do you accept alternative donations?

Alternative donations such as computer hardware, bandwidth, hosting, etc. cannot be accepted. Thanks for the offer though!
It does make me feel kinda sour that he's in debt like this, but then again, it is somewhat by his own choice (for the alternative donations).

I bet some /b/tards are gonna start donating now. It's happened before, way back when 4chan first popped up.

There are two pics of him in that article... one is more of a silhouette and the other is a full on face photo of him on his laptop. He has a gray hoodie on and lots of shaggy brown hair doing the emo swoop.

    I don't find him attractive.

granted, but myself and others certainly learned more about him as an individual reading the article than we knew beforehand.

i guess what i found interesting about the article was that up until now it's always been the same old ultra-whoosh over nine thousand penises all raping children, scientology war, hate mongering, negative shit that's been covered by total idiots who are completely clueless, and although that always provides some good laughs...here we have this well-intentioned modern corporate writer working for a major national paper who obviously has a somewhat limited knowledge of the goings-on of the online world, at least compared to a teenager who sits on 4chan all day...who is willing to consider 4chan in so positive a light, even touching on just how culturally significant and relevant it has become as well as on how in that regard, it is so largely overlooked and under-appreciated, compared to, say, facebook. i mean it's what your kids do at their computers all night...and here's this guy who's been bringing them all together for six years in this way that's in my mind far more constructive, meaningful and expressive than anything that ever takes place on facebook and he's gaining minimal recognition for it, mostly because he chooses to. it's a really respectably written article paying homage to this guy and to the community that he's fostered and he probably doesn't want or feel he deserves the attention and most of the members of his community certainly don't want the attention and will even attach negative stigma to such positive recognition. so in that way it's also really ironic. it's interesting to consider the future of 4chan in light of the article. i personally think that the impact that it will ultimately have on social networking websites and how they are run will be immense and positive in the long run.

    also i'm a straight male but i think he's a cutie.

If it is an assumed name, the reporter didn't do a good job getting her facts straight.

As someone who wanders in and out of 4chan occasionally (also my bf recently suddenly discovered /b/ and ... well let's just say I hope he gets bored with it soon, lol) I think it's a really cool service he provides... not many places are willing to completely foster and encourage the sort of organised anonymous anarchy that is 4chan. I'm not surprised wrt the advertising/donations gateways, I'm sure more encompassing advertisers would be horrified by a lot of the content and start wanting to restrict it more.

4chan's a bit of a cesspool, but it's one that's cool to have around, because occasionally something evolves and crawls out of it and makes an interesting impact on the world.

I know it can be hard to beleive, but most of 4chan's boards are pretty good.

Avoid /b/, as I'm sure you know, and /v/ is really more about RAAAAAAAAAAAGE and trolls than actual videogames, but /v/ still provides me with lots of entertainment throughout the day. And occasionally there's a good topic.

/r9k/ used to be good when it was just released, but it quickly became /relationshit9k/. That board is just depressing sometimes. Might be good to avoid it too.

I think the other popular boards are /a/, /k/ and /x/. I don't go to /a/ or /k/ (anime / weapons), but /x/ (paranormal) has some pretty freaky shit sometimes (like, not flat out disgusting shock images, but like actually disturbing, creepy shit).

the main reason he cant turn a profit with 4chan is mainly because alot of websites have blackballed 4chan in the past due to the old lolita board this includes websites like *Yahoo* *Paypal* that would refuse to have anything to do with 4chan, however there is no more lolita board he might have a chance, now its just nothing but dicks everywhere which is a little bit better i would think in acceptability
