I would look for some type of place similar to stores like Giant Robot ( GIANTROBOT.com ) or Super 7 ( Super 7 Store ) or just order online from there. They have alot of great-quality screenprints in the stores, and usually have a gallery of original work that changes every month or so. (Giant Robot in SF has pretty awesome artwork on the walls almost always) Not too expensive either. Screenprints are usually around $40~60 and maybe $50~150 for paintings done on usually wood block (that's the trend these days).

Also: get to know some artists/photographers/etc. You can't beat free prints & paintings. Especially if you actually like their work, going to an art school helps too.

You didn't criticize the artwork, you criticized him. If you gave an analysis of why that piece is lacking in aspects, then you'd be cool to say he got ripped off (nah, who am I kidding you'd still be a jackass).

And you never will with that attitude!

Pretty much everyone is dead on. Pier 1, IKEA, and local college should get you decent art on a budget. And local art shows.

Art schools often sell off work to benefit charities or the students and school; worth checking it out.

I guess we could argue semantics all day, but I won't. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I should've said, "You paid way too much money for that piece of work."

    better?

Go be an asshole about something less subjective.

The only people who like that painting are probably Feielle and the illustrator's mom... but I'm sure even she would secretly not want that abortion hanging on her fridge. I'd rather buy some shit at a Thomas Kincaid gallery before I would be caught dead with that monstrosity.

After looking at her website, I can see she obviously has talent... but totally missed the mark on that one.

Another thing, if people who create art or are even interested in art cannot handle criticism... well, they need to find a new interest/career.

I can't give picture examples, but I've seen some pretty decent looking stuff in Walmart and Target for $20-$40. I don't know the artist or what, but the picture and frame look decent/good.

You do realize that art has been criticized for centuries? Just b/c its subjective doesnt make it off limits to criticism. My biggest beef with it is that it has no feeling of motion to it. The hair is just randomly flying around with no direction...and im sorry, movement tends to effect things in a static way so you would think that there would be more than just a sunburst of hair...well I guess she couldve got hit in the face w/ a burst of air, but then her eyes would be closed. oh, and when you try and capture motion in a painting you need the DETAIL to make it look like anything other than an illustration. You need some muscle definition...even in the slightest to make it look good. Look at Caravaggio's paintings and they look like they are gonna jump off the canvas at you. This piece of work reminds me of "Buddy Christ" from Jay and Silent Bob movies...it looks way too rigid. It looks so unnatural.

Oh, and it isnt aesthetically pleasing...

I cannot imagine any art being worse than Thomas Kincaid. In my opinion his paintings are the crappiest crap that an artist ever crapped out. They lack anything of interest they are fluff. Not only that but they are mass produced and commercialized to hell.

To the OP the best place to get real art is at an art school or one of those starving artist shows. Most of the prints and stuff you find at Ikea and pier1 and walmart and safeway and other random places is really just pretty pictures but has no real depth or meaning to it. But if all you want to do is make your house look pretty without any real thought into it then that is the cheap way to go and effective. However if you want art for more than just being aesthetically pleasing then you need to find original works of art from up and coming unknown artists that sell their art cheap. Craigslist and school bulletins are good places to look.

For My part, finding a semi popular artist who makes suitably priced prints, and having a decent Matte/frame shouldnt cost more than 300$.

I swear by Michael Parkes, he is amazing, surreal, dreamlike and sensual, colors are muted enough so as to not be gaudy and most imagry is suitable for discussion, check it out.

I took a look at that artists website. His painting style is technically good though I did not find much interest in his paintings. I really liked his bronze sculptures though they had much more depth and movement to them and had much better compositions.

    Awesome thanx.

Picked up a couple Audrey's and a few Van Gogh almond blossom canvas paintings for pretty cheap, but still need about 10 more nice ones for the house.

Was looking for a few asian influence ones for the living room, then more of a jazzy era style for the pool room area. Then finish up with someone sexy for the bedroom (bedroom is deep crimson color atm).

Finished taxes last night and actually dont have to pay this year, so have a bit more to spend!
