Quick rundown:

I auditioned for a show in December, didn't get the part I wanted, but stayed in the show in ensemble, etc.

The girl who was cast missed a month and some of rehearsals due to conflicts, and lately has had to miss more because of personal issues. Last night she quit the show.

The production team hasn't already approached me, so I feel like they don't want me... but i want this role and have wanted to play it forever, I know all the music, I know the show.. I figure the biggest thing is my look, I'm rather tall for girls in theatre, and not typical skinny theatre girl, but it's community theatre. Oh, and I'm older...

I just don't know... if i should approach the director and risk feeling entirely insulted when he laughs in my face, or just wait it out and hope they ask, or wait and do nothing and then get all bitter if they give it to someone else... blah. HELP.

This totally sounds dumb, doesn't it? What does it matter, it's just community theatre, but I haven't done any performing in well over 6 years, and this has been so great to be back in, even though many times I dread GOING to rehearsal, I love everyone I've met and it's fun to be singing and dancing and whatnot again.

What do I do :/

This. Do your homework in advance and know what you can offer for the role before asking for it. When you approach the director, just point out how you can make the show better and at least fill the shoes of the girl who just left. Best of luck.

Pretty much my thoughts. They say no, you are in the same spot you were in before anyways. You can only move up in this situation.

Normally I'd say get the Director alone to ask or whoever makes the decisions (if there's more than one), but some may think you did something illicit to get the part.

I'm not sure how the politics of these things often work.

Could you even ask to re-audition for the part if they are unable to make a decision?

it's just... i am a very paranoid and pessimistic person, i'm pretty well-convinced everyone hates me all the time, so i really hate putting myself out on a limb like this.

Plus, i take everything very personally, the fact they didn't approach me already i can't help finding insulting.

Yes, they could say no and then be like 'how dare she be so presumptuous' and who knows what all, and all the producers and directors talk to each other, so that could make it difficult moving forward too.

And yes, I can sing the part, I actually had several other cast members tell me they wish I HAD gotten the part, I have had to cover all the other actress's high notes since she can't hit them.. but she was a huge favorite with the production team. So it's more the politics thing than the practicality thing that I'm worried about, I guess.

You're being self-critical Ashira. Just ask for the part. Sometimes you have to show ambition before people recognize it. They may not know you are that passionate and honestly you may be the best person for it and they simply don't know why.

If this is something you want you have to set the paranoia aside and just go for it.

I'd say you can ask them how finding a replacement is going and then say something like well keep me in mind I'd be interested blah blah. But I wouldn't flatly ask Hey since she's gone can i have it? You want the part bad but so do a bunch of other ladies too

You sound like me, I always evaluate situations such as yours way too much. What can happen, how do I look going in to it, etc. In the end, just say fuck it, and go for it. If you don't get the part, at least you tried. Good luck!!

I doubt very much that all the super popular actresses and actors out there had someone come to them with the roles they wanted. Repeated again, have some confidence and go after the part. If they say no, just show them that you'll kick as in your current role.
