When will Republicans learn that maybe it's the fact that they say one thing (small government, low taxes, respect for liberty...) and do another (big spending, intruding on personal liberty...) that makes it hard for anyone to vote for them?

you act like the GOP has a problem getting 40%+ of the vote. they simply get killed when it comes to minorities, and that's more to do with being a subtly racist/sexist party (in economic/institutional practice and public image) than betraying classical-liberal ideals that suburban hip-hoppers don't know or care about.
