Actually I'd say the power of the Constitution has more to do with limiting the powers of the federal government. Since they were fighting a war against a monarchy they wanted to make sure the government they set in place would not be like it or become it.

As a resident of this state, I havn't heard much about it at all from local radio. However, Governor Perdue is prolly aligning himself with other Governors that don't want to be forced to implement social policy that this bailout money might have attached to it. It simply just means that Georgia wants to spend this money the best way they think it to be spent, instead of forcing it into downtown Atlanta. (lolpeanuts perhaps).

This is definately not the secession that many think this is. Half the other states listed have Democrat Governors anyways, why is this suddenly dumb Conservatives acting out?

Am I a traitor if I think States are an outdated concept?

I mean, as far as I'm concerned I'm a human and that means I think I should have the same rights as every person on the planet ... but since World Peace isn't exactly a day away, how bout a bit smaller scale like oh I dunno, my own country? States were an invention of a time where even PA and FL may as well have been a million miles away for the common everyday man, but now its only 3 hours away by plane and 0 via internet/phone.

So, why should someone 20 minutes away from me have a handful of different rights than me, yet someone 4 hours away be part of the decision making process that makes me have those different rights? (I live in MD, its one fucked up shape too).

Just to pick an example that has NOTHING to do with me personally, why is it that you can have to co-workers working together each day getting paid the same and doing the same thing, yet potentially has the right to have an abortion but the other doesn't? Now don't confuse this with an abortion argument, I actually don't have a stance on abortion since I don't like to pretend like I'm omniscient enough to know the right answer, but in this example either both women SHOULD or both women SHOULDN'T have the right. Where they live has nothing to do with whether or not a fetus/egg is a human or not. Based on that North Dakota article below what we as a nation are saying is that by jumping back and forth over an invisible line a woman;s egg is a human with rights one moment then not the next moment.

Ok, so hopefully I didn't go on too much using the abortion example but I chose it cause I'm neutral on the topic of for/against. On the other hand I'm not neutral on things like say ... Education, Energy Laws, Gay Marriage, Gambling, etc. Don't get me wrong, like any thing else, lower levels of Administration are needed at many levels and I'm in no way implying federal government rules all, but when it comes to local management it should be kept to things that ARE dependent on locality: Budgeting, Speed Limits, Zoning, Law Enforcement, Sanitation, Water, Energy, Local Environment are just some of the things that have local need for finer control, but in this day and age the rights of Americans should NOT be state based.




Edit: Just to add, I got bitter about the whole "state" thing when I moved to MD and got taken for a financial ride on a few things in my first year here and I got hosed for a couple thousand dollars cause even though I LIVED in MD, I'm not a "Maryland Resident" until I lived here 12 months. And since I sure as hell wasn't a PA resident anymore, I was apparently in some flux where I was some sort of alien from Mars or something. I dunno, all I know is I lost money and took a hit to my credit rating while I tried to appeal it and lost. Either way, working along the I-95 corridor and having coworkers from MD, VA, WV, DC, and even PA ... its ridiculous when a conversation comes up about things we each can and can't do. I just moved into a different house, I don't remember filling out immigration papers to declare my loyalty to a new nation.

And not to over glorify things I realize I'm bitching about fairly minor things that pale in comparison to what a real immigrant has to deal with moving between countries, especially if they came from a bad neck of the woods, but I dunno, it still bothers me.
