Window Tint Violation

Are there any laws regarding the rear seat windows? Mine are tinted a bit (original owner did this). They aren't very dark, but the tint needs to be redone or removed and I'd probably have it redone a bit darker

The cop told me today I had to rip out front drivers/passengers/rear window but could leave the back two windows, so I'd assume no. For the record he said mine were at 5%, so from what you said earlier, you could probably get them as dark as you want, but unless it's IN I'd check the laws.

it sounds like he's telling you to turn your car into a limo lol. But yeah I've had I think one friend pulled over because of front tint (he had the top strip too far down on the front window). If I remember right it was in Evansville too

The windows behind the front seats can be tinted. If the rear window is tinted (obstructing a back to front view), you have to add additional rear-view mirrors on both sides of the vehicle.

The law says you can put certain materials on the front windows for the purpose of blocking UV radiation, but there's a number of restrictions on it (eg., it has to be no less than 88% transparent, certified by the installer, etc.) Basic tinting is still not allowed.

Reads to me more that you are required to have a passenger-side rear-view mirror in that instance moreso than adding more. While the vast majority of vehicles come with both anyway, AFAIK it's not required by law (at least in all areas) to have the passenger side one.

You're right; I read it wrong. You have to have, but necessarily add, rear-view mirrors on both sides.

It would seem kind of odd, in retrospect, for a car to be forced to have add an additional driver's side mirror.

It might mean you need blindspot mirrors on your side mirrors, otherwise my rear window should have been fine, but he told me it needed taken off completely.

Can't they come up with a tint by now that would provide a mirror finish on the outside that won't allow anyone to look in, but allow good enough clarity at night to see out that it would be legal?

Ideally, being able to toggle the tint would be awesome. Tint when you need it during the day, and turn it off at night. You could even be lazy, and make it inverse of the headlights.

the reason dark tint above a certain rating is illegal i thought was its danger to police officers. if they cant see in then its a risk that there could be people with guns drawn on them inside.

I don't think mine is that dark, but they are pretty dark. And no the dealership didn't mention a word about the level of the tint and whether or not it would be an issue. First time I had tinted windows and since they didn't mention anything about it then, I've never given it a second thought.

I've never went and got my car windows tinted so I couldn't tell you, but I would assume people who like it.

My first post was right after I got my ticket in which he told me I had limo tint because I've had people tell me before it's not. After searching limo tint pictures, and Kurt posting the car there, I'm still fairly certain it's not. There is a lot more visibility in my car than anything I've found (and like I said, I'm fairly certain the cop said 10% when he did his whatever with the boxes)

But anyway I've gotten the information I need. Thanks for people who replied letting me know it's probably just a fix-it ticket, so I'm glad it's not going to be a big deal.

15% is the legal limit in GA last I checked, the place I use for tints doesn't give you a receipt if they do anything below that
