By the end on my soldier playthrough I just did samara/garrus/thane for assault rifle/sniper biotics lol

Garrus and Thane were my 2 road dogs for the majority of my first playthrough. I mixed in Miranda here and there as well.

I wish you could unlock Legion earlier in the story because he was boss'n that shit up on the final mission

All of the loyalty quests are easy. Learn their personality and talk to them/take actions in accordance to their personalities. Support Miranda, be ruthless with Garrus' enemy, etc.

You can paragon/renegade them into shutting the fuck up and keeping both loyalties you would otherwise lose.
