It really comes down to the lottery of yields. I mean, you know to expect a 10% yield on Ores, so if you look at ore prices and see what 10 ores of one element will yield for you. Fire Ore have the best return for Woodworkers (on my server, NQ Fire Staff is 50K, which is big), and they are right up there with Light/Dark/Earth ore.

I know a goldsmith, and I'm a Woodworker, so I can also directly change my Ore into beads to play the Elemental Staff lottery. It's not so much what you can grow in this day and age, it's what you can do with what you grow that makes you the money.

but Platinum Leaves really skew the perception, because the only way to suck is to get lots of Clusters, and over a span of several mules, the numbers really work out in your favor. As mentioned above, you can reasonably expect 100K per pot per mule, PLUS an Ice Ore and a handful of wind clusters.

I fear for the day that they nerf Platinum Leaves, but even then the Sapling market will level out and Ores will be the reason people grow with Saplings again. Right now Sapling stacks are 95K on Asura, which is 25K higher than they were three months ago. I'm almost to the point where growing cuttings into Saplings is a better return for me.
