    XP Reformat issue

I just reformatted my desktop with XP executive and i'm running into a problem. I cant connect to the internet. I'm not sure what to do because it's not even detecting when the wire is unplugged or not ("A network cable has been unplugged" message). I dont think I missed anything and this is the second time i've used this disk to reformat. Never had an issue before. Any suggestions?

The XP disc does not come with the drivers to your network card. You need to look up the drivers on the manufacturer's website, download them and throw them on a USB stick. Install on your newly formatted computer and you'll be g2g.

It's the basic 1394 net adapter. All I can find is the drivier version it has on it. When I go to IP config, it doesnt show anything. When I get on internet explorer and try to go to a webpage, it says "Internet explorer cannot open the search page".

It's not showing anything else because the hardware isn't installed. What kind of desktop do you have? Make/model

If i recall the 1394 Net Adapter actually does.... nothing, I went through a lot of machines before and that adapter is not the adapter used to get on the internet.

1394 Net adapter is the network link driver for a FIREWIRE port. It's not a net connection but, you could technically connect two computers together using it if you wanted to theoretically which is why it shows as a network adapter.

Firewire? Ah, thanks. I never bothered to look it up. I remember back somewhere yes it is used to connect 2 computers together, but haven't seen it for a long time lol...

It's a Dell Media Center desktop. It's my aunts, not mine so i'm not exactly sure on the specs. not sure what came in it either.

Go to support.dell.com and choose the model you have, or enter the service tag. It'll give you a list of drivers. Download the one for your network card, and you should be all set.

I was mistaken. It's a HP Media Center m7170n Desktop PC. I cant seem to find the driver download on thier support page though. Maybe i'm just blind. I appreciate the help though, Cephius!

Ran it and nothing changed. I'm wondering if a new card would fix it

You dont need a new card, just the drivers. Go into your device manager, you should see an "Unknown Devices" expandable section, and under that you should see something like "Network Controller". Right click that, and click update drivers, and point it at the drives you just downloaded, or see if it autoinstalls them.

So can you go Right click on my computer -> propreties > material tab > device manager.

SS what you get and try to post it here from another computer?

Ok... try this: Software License Agreement

Just accept and click the link to download the drivers.

Get a jump drive, or just use your ipod or phone or an external hard drive.

From Device Manager, try to delete/remove/uninstall the "Ethernet Controller" device and reboot. I've had issues like this before with other hardware even after installing drivers for it. Worth a shot to see if it fixes it.

But i guess that's what school is for. Anyway, thank you again and if i have any more problems, i hope you dont mind if i PM you or something.
