I'm actually in the same exact boat, with way too much free time on my hands, and when something comes up, I finish it in 10 minutes. That being said: I've done the following

Read forums, obviously for hours on end.
Read wow bullshit for hours when I first got into it.
Downloaded emulators and completed the following games: Megaman x1-3, super nova, gemfire, xmen the arcade game, final fantasy 3(US), Mike tysons punch out, megaman 1-6, super mario 1-3, played dr mario, some tower D games online.

    Read more forums.
    Check web comics
show epic pictures I found to awesome co worker
Bullshit with co worker for hours on end about stupid shit
    Txt people
    Youtube
Homework (I'm in grad school still)
Photoshop a picture of my friend at work and his wife to include starscream and optimus prime
More forums (especially random image thread, people need to post more shit there faster!)
Change the video settings of a coworker's screen to be rotated 90 degrees
    Did i mention reading forums?

I'm all out of shit to do now though :[

I do this to one guy every day, 180 degree change, every time i'm in the area and i see he's not at his desk. He's a right jackass, deserves it. One of those people who assumes he's more important than you and you should do his work. He has to consistently call me to fix it though

It's more likely than you think. Given a choice, I would much prefer actual work than boredom and pretentious professionalism that I am obligated to maintain because I am being paid. Once I interned at a financial service firm in NYC and was paid $25 an hour to build the most simplistic financial models (that usually took 30 minutes to a couple hours). My then co-workers were telling me that it is an art to know how to pretend to be working. This is a fortune 500 company with a market cap over $15 billion.

I wish that were true at my firm. I probably should go into consulting where people have nightmares about long hours.

One of my jobs is over 99% free time. The only actual work I've done at this job this entire month is add paper to the printer yesterday. That's 5 minutes of work in an entire month where I work 10 hours per week. It's not that I'm being lazy or anything, it's just that there is litterally no work to be done here.

So I surf BG, read random wikipedia articles, read physicsforums.com and scientific american. Or I watch House, 24, and Heroes.

The sites I regularly visit at work are

    BG
    Physicsforums.com
    Scientific American
    Random wiki articles
    Surfthechannel.com

I live in the UK and inbetween our second and third year of university it's not uncommon to take a placement year out in a company. The particular company i got a job with has the one IT manager and then a student. He handles all the complicated ERP crap, while i handle all the helpdesk side of things. Don't get me wrong, it's not a job where they give the student less responsibility for being a student, they expect as much out of me as they did the previous full time person in my role. They just find it cheaper to exploy a student for a year instead of having to salary a full timer, when both can do the job.

My job role basically covers; printer ink/paper refills, changing backup tapes, changing keyboard mice batteries (yep, my lazy-arse users can't even do that themselves), installing new PCs, and then troubleshooting and fixing any software or hardware that isn't related to the ERP that breaks.

Basically, unless something is broken, I spend 15mins/day changing backup tapes, and then wait for the phone to ring. I work 9 hour days. Lots of free time.

I'm a mentor (English, Math, Logic, Spanish, etc.) and a computer lab assistant. That being said, there is a lot of downtime. However, I always try to look busy by working on projects of my own (since I have a business) and occasionally lurk BG.

Yeah, that's pretty similar to what I do. I supervise a computer lab, which means I only have a job to do when something is broken, though I have less responsibilities than you. I think it's structured this way on purpose because they expect students to do their homework while at work here or something.

Now at my second job, I don't really have free time because it's a research job, and there's always research to be done (and if there wasn't I wouldn't go to work).
