the issue is that i'm using a xbox 360 controller, and for some reason the real drivers(which auto install) treat the triggers as a Z axis, instead of buttons, and for some reason, when i go into ffxi config, since they aren't buttons, i can't set them for macros, the way the controller is set when you play on 360.

That link to XBCD that was posted above is what you need. I used that to get the triggers to be treated as digital buttons for my first party wired 360 controller and a MadCatz 360 controller.

i'm still pretty sure it ISN'T whatever driver that is. i uninstall all drivers related to this, install that driver, then go to plug in my controller when prompted and it STILL auto installs the normal xbox 360 controller drivers.

Probably meant this one: Xbcd 360 Install Guide
You have to go through the 3rd party's config menu. It'll treat your triggers as digital (which is a whole lot better than nothing).

BTW, you are using a wired 360 controller, right?
And I think this has problems with Vista.

That driver only works for wired, there isn't one for wireless if thats the kind you are using.

No, it's exactly what you're looking for. I use this set of drivers for the exact same purpose as your OP. Try reading the page.

    Version 0.56
Now Triggers can act as buttons

I still CANNOT use whatever driver this is for my 360 wired controller. hell, when i install that driver i can't even find it on the device manager list, and the microsoft drivers for the controller auto install still.

there is either something i'm missing, or that just isn't the correct driver.
