Perry: PSP 2 is Real, Could Hit This Fall [Kotaku]

The a UMD-free Playstation Portable 2 is indeed real and could hit as early as this fall, David Perry, chief creative officer at Acclaim, told Kotaku today.

"I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now," he said. "I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me."

Perry said he is excited about the news.

"I've been pounding on Sony for a long time to make the Playstation Portable relevant and not to let Apple stroll away with the portable game market," he said. "Look at what Apple is doing now. Why are so many investors investing in Apple game development? Trying to pitch a PSP game to investors right now is brutal."

The idea of a UMD-free Playstation Portable begs the question of how games will be loaded onto the device.

Perry believe it will be done through digital downloads and direct connect to a computer.

The ultimate goal, he says, is for the Playstation Portabel to go 100 percent digital. Not only would that allow Sony to have a more direct connection with their customers and get a larger piece of the sales pie, it would essentially kill the used game sales market.

As a stop gap to keep retailers like GameStop interested in selling the Playstation Portable 2, which they make little to no money on, Perry thinks that Sony would at least initially sell games for the device on Memory Sticks, as they currently do with some movies, or with pre-paid cards.

As for backwards compatibility, it stands to reason, Perry says, that all current PSP titles would show up on Playstation's online store.

While Perry insists that the PSP2 is real, and already been developed for, a lot of the details about distribution and release are more speculative on his part.

It does make sense that games will one day go digital only, it seems inevitable. But is now too soon for something like the PSP?

If this is real, having no UMD would make the PS2P skinnier/lighter wouldn't it? Or give more space for additional hardware while retaining a somewhat slim figure?

There are far more iphones and ipods than DSs. The industry views Apple as a serious competitor right now since they stealthed their way into the market and have been going *very* strong on game sales.

That said I look forward to all digital consoles(even though the original PSP already is this once haxed!).

iPhone/Touch has already *sold* 50 million games in the brief time it's been to market vs 107 million *shipped* in the PSP's entire lifetime. So yeah, it already has the momentum to over-take the PSP and will be competing with the DS in the future in terms of numbers.

Download-only games really do not appeal to me in any way. But then again, I call BS on most of this article. I think this guy is talking out of his ass on everything except the actual development of a PSP2.

Edit: Ipod/Itouch games are not in the same category as PSP/DS/360/PS3 etc. They are more like a novelty for people to go "look what my phone can do" or something to play on the bus if you aren't really into games or don't wanna carry a gaming system.

iPhone/Touch has already *sold* 50 million games in the brief time it's been to market vs 107 million *shipped* in the PSP's entire lifetime. So yeah, it already has the momentum to over-take the PSP and will be competing with the DS in the future in terms of numbers.

Those "sold" games include free ones, and the PSP numbers dont include PSP downloads, so it's skewed.

iPhone wont even scratch the JP market, Nintendo and Sony dont have a thing to worry about.

As already been said, a lot of people consider their Touch or IPhone as their gaming device. The evidence of this is easy to see just by the amount of decent and crappy games you can get off of iTunes for them.

But in any case, PSP + Sixaxis + Touch screen sounds like a lot of fun. Hope it doesnt die out because of retail shoppers.

Regardless of whether you think they are shitty games or not (99% are!) the iphone/itouch game market exploded. Everyone and their brother is trying to make games for it because it's easy and accessable. (my brother and I are producing a game for it now, how ironic) It's partly to blame on the demographic that has an iphone, a rather large chunk of people that don't know what's good or bad or even new in regards to video games. Whatever is cute, easy to pause, and makes use of some fucking retarded accellerometer and touchscreen controls. Even some bigger name games are starting to get ported over to make use of those controls unique to any portable gaming device, like Super Monkey Ball.

People are dumping a lot of money into it. It's kinda' absurd, but it's true.
