This and the "Greatest Games Ever" thread are both comedy gold. The team who made this list should give lessons in trolling.

The ones I bolded I view as the biggest impacts. Mostly because they were the jump-starting of their genres. FF7 had the biggest impact of any FF before it. RE pretty much single-handedly created the survival horror genre. SF2 for 2D fighters, Tekken 2 for 3-D fighters. Notably missing is Doom which really brought out the FPS games, though I know it wasn't the first. Mario and Sonic for platforming. GTA for sandbox/open world games. Tetris for puzzles and still being one of the oldest and most popular games ever. Gran Turismo brought sim-like racers to the table. Lastly Mario Kart was an awesome party game where anyone could simply play it and have fun regardless of previous gaming experience.

I'm not saying the other games are bad, but they didn't have quite the "impact" that they are numbered for. Honestly, most of the other games wouldn't have been even thought of if their predecessors on the list were not largely popular and created huge impacts.

At least the "Greatest Games Ever" thread is obviously subjective

Guinness - putting this list out - is a joke, however. Subjective list is subjective.

And yet you don't mention Stealth / tactical games games nor bold MGS which made that what it is today.

    ^ This.

I can see why a lot of those games are on there for "impact", though there are many on the list that I don't like. Also, the order is crazy fucked up. I could give an example, but I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.

Didn't mean my list as the definitive "these are the only impact games." Yes, Metal Gear spawned a bit of a following and the Solid series did much to improve upon the 3d stealth series to even spawn rival games like Tenchu and Splinter Cell.

I think that's a really humble way to describe one of the (easily) best games ever. I like Splinter Cell but it is a joke compared to MGS. But bullshit list is bullshit. (Theirs, not yours lol)

People are confusing this list with a "best of" list. To be honest, I think they got it right. Ask any 10 random non-gamer and they'll tell you that they've played every game in the top 10 at least once at some point of their life. (save maybe wtffxi12)

It's also not "the most recognizable games ever". It's the most influential games ever. Those are definitely not the top-10/list of MOST influential games ever. Some are, many are not. Resident Evil IV is #7, but Resident Evil original is 30? Are you kidding me? The game that invented a genre HAS to be more influential than one that tweeked it.

That is what confuses me too. The fourth wouldn't even be on the list if the first didn't succeed. Had it been a flop, we probably wouldn't have seen Silent Hill or Parasite Eve either.

Now ask anybody who's played PC games for over 10 years and he'll say 'fuck you Halofag' and scrobble it out, replacing it with Half Life, and proceed to do the same with much of the list. The list is wrong if it's a 'best of' list, a 'most recognizable' list or a 'most influential' list.

Its funny to see Goldeneye on rank 10 and halo on rank 6, thanks to Goldeneye we have FPS in console.

    Most recognizable:

    1. Mario (duh)
    2. Tetris (everyone has played this at least once)
    3. Bejeweled ^ (instead of working)
    4. GTA (They haven't played it but they've heard bad things about it on tv)
    5. Guitar Hero (Either played it at a friends house or heard about it)
    6. Rock Band ^
    7. Final Fantasy (Games are very popular and the movies make them even more so)
    8. World of Warcraft (people know someone who plays this/Mr.t, Ozzy commercials)
    9. Star Wars (Movies >>> Games)
    10. Tomb Raider ^

I think either of the other two lists would be far more subjective.

WoW is way more recognized than GTA, Rock Band, or Guitar Hero. Only because the amount of people playing it currently. My ex was a recruiter/headhunter/whatever you want to call them for a tech company and when people were contacting her about jobs, some managers were even specifying that they do not want anyone who plays World of Warcraft or any other MMO because they will probably spend more time distracted by that game than working.

Uh, there was FPS's on consoles before Goldeneye and even if Goldeneye didn't come out we would still be flooded with FPS's like we are today. It was the first real successful and well designed console one, but they just happened to be the the first to do so, would have only been a matter of time til another FPS came out that'd have a huge impact like it did. Doesn't mean I don't agree with the fact it should be higher than Halo, but Halo really is a "bigger" game,

Bigger fanbase, more well known. I'd almost say it had as big an impact on the console FPS market as Goldeneye did, but that's more how you look at it. Goldeneye set a much higher standard for console shootans, but Halo did the exact same thing again when it was released. It was definitely a much smaller jump forwards than Goldeneye was, but at the point it came out it's hard to do anything innovative. Also, Halo invented FPS's, etc.

Halo is a video game franchise that has repeatedly sold millions.
Goldeneye 007 is a video game that sold millions but has failed to translate into future Bond game success.

Halo, as a series, has had far greater impact.

Furthermore, the control scheme currently used by FPSes all stems from Halo's. Many games now feature regenerating health thanks to Halo. I'm sure games with those features came before Halo, but make no mistake, it was Halo that made them the standard.
