The worst thing about this is that I am going to be only one in my Linkshell(or any of them for that matter) with it unlocked.

Most of the people I prefer to do stuff with are current on missions/quests, because well...we did them together, right when they came out. Assuming this isn't the last major FFXI expansion, I wonder how many more will have to be released before a larger chunk of the population comes to the realization that SE tends to put stuff you want at the end of expansion mission chains. The final rewards for WotG will be released, and I can just hear people's brains going "Holy shit! if only I'd known! Hay gaiz, who wants to start on missions!?
?".
I'm sure there will be emo about people wanting to rank up faster for bodies, too. The one thing I'm not sure of is whether Ops completion is going to be a factor in anything. Requiring completion of all ops for all 3 nations would just be cruel (like that would stop SE). For just one nation, though...that should be relatively possible, unless you picked Bastok >.> Someone from my LS was asking me about ops there, and Crimson Domino 2 apparently still had most of its stars on like a Wednesday.
Exactly. That's why I desperatly want them to have some good reward at the end of the whole thing, and especially at the end of all 3 nation quests. That way, I might actually be able to drag people out there to get them done someday.
I know a lot of people saying they'll only do WOTG missions when SE reveal the shinies at the end. Seems to have been a lot of shouts on Midgard over the weekend from people trying to get up to date with the quest lines though - personally I've just been doing them because I want to (apart from Bastok, done those for completeness and for sadistic pleasure at the scenes of Galka persecution and death).
Yes, I am a Cait Sith fan girl totally - any of the kitty missions I'm more keen on than the nation storylines, but the whole thing is starting to knot together quite intriguingly and I was always a storyline nut within the game. Got to the point where the current content's cleared purely with pickups as well.
I think it will majorly depend on the version update schedule for the rest of the year.
Walk of Echoes is most definitely tied to WotG mission proper, and not nation quests, so theres a likelihood that it will be released in conjunction with WotG missions coming out, that is to say this update or the update after the next..
If we are to assume we're still getting 4 updates a year (seems unlikely due to the delays pushing back both Mar and June by a month), then theres a possibility we will get Walk of Echoes by Dec, but otherwise, it'd probably mean Walk of Echoes, and the resolution of WotG mission story in March 2010.
If the interviews are to be believed, SE did say they had at least 1 years worth of content planned up ahead of E3 (in June), which would likely mean that storyline schedule would have been planned to end at the latest by June (lets say its a rough 1 year estimate)
in other words, if we assume 4 updates a year..
Jul09: WotG -> Sept/Oct09: Nation -> Dec: WotG (could have Walk of Echoes)
OR -> Mar'10: Nation -> June '10: WotG (could have Walk of Echoes)
And if we assume 3 updates a year..
Jul09: WotG -> Dec: Nation -> Mar/Apr'10: WotG (could have Walk of Echoes / resolution to WotG).
I personally think nation quests will end before wotg missions, but it might also stretch past it to tie up Crystal War story ends (like Zeid/Volker vs Shadowlord, which should be allowed to take place without interference from WotG influences)
either way, its probably gonna be a while
edit: i'll be one of the uncommon few with missions done.. tho i also have some friends who do them with me... also have some friends who are 1 update behind, but probably can catch up.
We are only a bit over half way in the story. I'd say we got at least 2 more nation storylines to go. 2-3 of the central storyline to accompany it.
So 4-5 updates? Or maybe just really big mission updates.
Myself and 3 other ls-mates finally finished the bastok arc (thus all 3 completed now). Oh well, more shinnies for us! Luckly we can pretty well 4 man everything up till now.
At least we all made a nice profit from the mission rewards before they tank eh?
I also feel the epicness of the last few wotg CS also contributed to my "wtf" when I ran though ACP....
ToAU just shouted that it was rushed and not properly planned out though. A lot of that stuff isn't fully explained or even utilized (like the compass-thingy the Galka gives us early on -- bet most people don't even remember it happening since it's never mentioned again). Although there's no proof that WotG won't fall into the same pothole, I'm really hoping we don't suddenly see the end too soon. I'm actually somewhat happy not everyone has kept up with WotG. It'll be fun to explore this new place once it's released before it gets overcrowded and overcamped.
WotGs story is definitely much better written than ToAUs. Although both of them are tales woven based on a 'prophecy', WotGs is a lot more clear about this, and sets events in a somewhat structured manner. Like at the end of each update leg, you definitely find something new about the story but also have new questions posed..
With ToAU, it was a lot of cat-and-mouse, dragged out mini story arcs and the worst thing i feel is the pacing, that was so slow at the start and then too fast at the end.
It did serve its purpose of being 'epic' but there was very little emotion in it. Characters that may have developed were never well fleshed out, and their interaction with one another was minimal. It was fluff basically.
WotGs story thus far is stellar. It cleverly uses a main storyline and 3 parallel story arcs that seem to run along it, perfectly unrelated, but gradually intertwine with the main story. Each has its set of questions, but in progressing in the main WotG story, the insight gained adds value to each of the other arcs, and the come together beautifully to create a larger story puzzle.
After finishing the most recent leg of missions from today, I feel fairly confident in saying that the nation story arcs will wind down by the next update, and that WotG mission proper will follow after that. After all, their story arcs are being tied together already, and the resolution of the WotG missions is said (according to story) to pivot along the battle at Xarcabard.
Nation quests already allude to the very next event in the Crystal War to being that very battle, thus forcing the climax of the WotG story to occur immediately after.
Also since the pace of WotG missions is considerably faster, i can see the climax happening just then
I am guessing that it will be nation quests + Shanttoto World Domination, then Walk of Echos (first update without the mini-scenarios consuming all dev team resources), then nation quests completion, then Wings completion.
Treasures had no "end-game zone" that was attached to the story, but if it follows the CoP route then it will be open the area, then completion of the storyline after it.
Once the preview notes with Walk of Echoes are released, everyone will rush to get them done.
They aren't like CoP, not very difficult at all if you really want to do them.
There is never going to be another Airship fight sadly. To me, the Airship fight was, is and will be the pinnacle of any MMO experience. I have never experienced anything as difficult or enjoyable as that one fight.
Casuals have killed the MMO experience for everyone. But that one fight will not be forgotten.
I believe he was referring to a zone that opens up towards/at the end of a storyline. Lumoria in CoP would be an example of this. Alzadaal Undersea Ruins is more of a large group of event areas. It would be like calling Limbus and Endgame Zone.

Personally I think it would be WIN if they forced your to do all 3 storylines to finish off the missions entirely.
Blablabla, emptiness, blablabla, ripple through time.
I'm sure they could shit an explanation, the backstory about the world/goddess is so vague that nearly anything could works.
Personally, I hope they will go for a time loop. FF1 and FF8 both had time loop...so it's not like the concept would be new to FF's story.
