    Buying a Fedora

I've really wanted a fedora for quite a bit now, but I'm not really sure what to buy, in regards to material, color, etc and what kind of price range these things usually have.

Not everyone can wear one and not make it look like they are trying too hard. Are you man enough to wear a hat like this?

unless you're over 50 it's kinda a douche move to wear one, even then it's iffy, unless it's just part of a costume or something for fun

If you can find a proper haberdashery in your city, try that out first. The staff there will be able to show you some hats that will work best with your face and body. Don't be discouraged if a fedora isn't one of them, different hat styles and even proportions within a style (crown hight, pinch, brim length) do different things for different types of faces.

I'm a tall and skinny guy, and a wide-brim fedora doesn't look very good on me, just accentuates the fact that I don't have terribly wide shoulders. However, I found a nice trilby with a shorter crown that looks absolutely awesome. I wear it to the office all the time.

As for materials, it really depends on how much you want to spend. A nice blocked felt hat could cost into the hundreds of dollars, but you can get years and years of wear out of it so long as you can get is cleaned properly by a hatmaker. (fyi a blocked hat is one that is made on a hat mold (a block) with only a few pieces of material, kind of like how sheet metal is moulded in a dye) Less expensive hats are not made on blocks and are usually just stitched together. A non-blocked hat isn't a bad thing at all, but if you want the "real thing" try and find a proper blocked hat that will last and last.

As for materials, felt or other heavier materials for winter, and softer materials - even straw for Panama hats and straw fedoras - for summer.

Anyway, best advice I can say is take someone with you or have a salesperson give you some feedback on what works best with your face and body type.

Enjoy your new lid and wear it with pride!

Alright first things first. Make sure what you want is a "fedora". Many people confuse many hats with fedora's. A Tyrolean is not a Fedora. A Pork pie is not a Fedora. An Akubra is NOT a Fedora. A boater is not a goddamn Fedora. A Homburg is very often confused as well, but it also is not a Fedora. A Borsalino is a brand, not a kind of Fedora. And most commonly confused imho, A Trilby is not a Fedora, though they are damn near as awesome.

Before you decide to call a hat a fedora, be sure to check if it matches attires from 30s to 60s. If it does, I'll let you get away with calling it a fedora. What Quannum posted is a bastardization of the Trilby. Indianna Jones wears a kind of fedora. Stetsonhat.com is a very good place to start, they make a wide variety of hats, of which fedoras are included. The quality is pretty damn good too. I'd recommend newyorkhatco.com over them though. Just find out who carries their shit.

    [edit]

Fedoras are a fantastic piece of fashion. However, 99% of kids that wear them in this day and age, do not have the face for it, nor do they dress in a manner that matches the hat. At least fucking color coordinate! I'm tired of seeing pimply faced twats riding skateboards in hats they call fedoras. i want to harm them! Also follow proper hat ettiquette. be sure to fucking doff whenever appropriate!

I personally love wearing my Fedora, I hope it is one so Demosthenes doesn't go ape shit.

Here are a few pics of mine out in Philly.

I bought this one at Buckle for pretty cheap. If I wore them more often I would probably buy more expensive ones.

I find they are nice hats when you are wanting to go out and have a good time, not an every night thing. Well unless you are that guy who is fits their personality but it is a nice change of pace.

Curious, what is proper hat etiquette (when's appropriate for doffing?)?

Always around women, or at least readjust so they can see your face clearly. Generally you remove them in buildings, as you would remove a coat. Religious places, before anyone you have any iota of respect for. In this day an age it's not needed to take the hat off and keep it off. You may raise it slightly and return it right to your head. Simply raising the brim and readjusting is good enough in formal company.

Serif, that looks like a Trilby. Good job not making it look retarded! Dress shirt and tie go a long way to making it fit better on your head.
