I honestly and wholeheartedly thought "doffing" meant "looking like a pretentious douchebag" for a quick second there.

I have some old fedora hats that my grandfather used to wear. I think some of them were imported, he said they all cost him $200+

I should get those out and dust them off.

I wear a fedora in my every-day life, I'm a young-man and have been stopped by countless girls who stop me just to comment how handsome I look in my hat.

If it isn't working for you, it's cause you ain't got class.

Speaking of etiquette, there is an "order of precedence" of sorts when it comes to mens hats and how casual or formal they are. From my basic understanding, here's the order from casual to formal for northern or non-tropical climates:

Newsboy Cap, Boater > Walking Hat, Trilby, Porkpie, Bowler, Fedora > Homburg > Top Hat

However, regional differences can make changes in this list. In the UK the Bowler is still considered (from my knowledge) to be part of the banker/finance worker's standard attire with a black suit, whereas a bowler in North America isn't really considered formal attire but much more associated with mod/punk scenes. Similairly with the trilby, which was originally a hat worn in the counrty or hunting in the UK but is considered on the same level as the fedora in North America for formality.

I really wouldn't wear a homburg with anything except a full suit or black tie, they are quite formal and not really an "everyday" thing unless you're a rapper or pimp.

In tropical areas things are more relaxed with straw Fedoras and Boaters being the norm, or a slick Panama hat fitting nicely with a suit.

This is truth. When I wore my hat to work and had it on while in my suit and overcoat, I definitely caught the eye of girls on the street and got quite a few compliments. But it takes confidence to wear it well and appropriate clothes for the hat.

You guys might know this, seeing as so many of you are clearly high-brow hat purveyors, where might I find a Top-Hat? (it's for a party, i'm not that much of a d-bag), clearly cheaper price range would be nice.

If you want to just wear it for a party, best to hire one from a costume hire rather than buy one... they're quite expensive from what I've seen (because of their rather niche market).

PS thanks Demosthenes for the doffing tips, I'll pass them on to my stylish yet etiquette-clueless hat-wearing friends

Eh I went this way with a top hat. It was cheap and shitty quality, but I wear it around when I feel like it. I wanted to get a good fedora but now I'm still not sure what kind is best. Apparently there are more types then I thought.

No problem, most guys never seem to understand much more attractive they can be with proper etiquette.

Yeah it's pretty hot! Confidence to pull off hat + stylish clothes to match hat + classiness from good etiquette is very impressive.
