Issues with Lag.

I'm currently getting some serious issues with lag on my xbox 360 while playing FFXI. My friend, who lives all the way on the east coast, I'm on the west coast, is having the same issues. She has no problem with PC but with xbox, it's the lag again. Does anyone know what's going on? Maybe an Xbox Live issue or something to do with our internet company? It got so bad, that both my wife's xbox and mine froze. Thanks in advance for any help.

P.S. My interent seems to be a bit slow today, but not as bothersome as a 5 second wait for my actions to register in the server.
