The main reason they didn't implement the storage of +1 item sets was because they wanted a lot of this stuff to go back to the AH. In other words, they want people to use the AH as a storage system, not hoard everything.
Naturally, with a 3-day timeout, it's not really that effective as a storage system.
Presumably, the reason they didn't implement partial storage was because they didn't want to flood the DATs with a ton of new key items and make people have to navigate dialogs for 8 hours trying to remove a Chapeau, and also to motivate the crafting and purchase of some of the less desirable portions of equipment for the purposes of storage. For example, Seer's Pumps or Noct Gaiters.
Having a Rare/EX storage system would be nice, but since the items don't conform to any particular theme with which to subdivide, and you likely have 50+ to store, it would also take forever.
There's a few easy solutions that they could embrace which would definitely lighten the load for many of us. They've already talked about a willingness to develop container objects like the Automaton and Maze Tabula. We could definitely use more of these sorts of things.
A tackle box.
A keyring.
A Mog Furnishings container (furniture that doesn't take up Mogsafe space!).
A Reflector pouch (for fans of Pankration!).
Things like the furnishings container would go a long way toward band-aid'ing the problem. I know Storage was supposed to offset the space loss from furniture, but clearly we've outgrown that, and it's a hassle having to go back to your home nation to access it. Instead of making it an offset, why not make it a bonus for using furniture? In other words, take the penalty away.
I would even suggest a special container for NIN/COR/THF/RNG that allows them to stow pouched tools/bolts/bullets/arrows. Collapsable tools was a great start, but that still means that a fully-decked Ninja requires 26 slots to hold a full complement of tools.
I don't care what the items are or how much they cost for the quest. As a BLM any inventory increase is welcome!

Would be an interesting gem candidate; could perhaps at least stop having to NPC Sparkling Stones for a few months.
Ugh, this reminds me. While it makes sense to have the levels of gear ranked from top to bottom in the storage NPC's dialogue box, everything else in the game is up=YES down=NO and for him it's the other way around.
Muscle memory hits enter+enter or enter+up+enter at the "Do you really want to take your Claim Slip?", which exits the dialogue, try again, enter+enter, /facepalm
I know some people at least store their event furniture but it's arguably not enough. This would adjust prices quite a bit, though, because right now items that give storage space are valued based on how many +spaces you get since the furniture takes up one space itself. When storage spaces change (e.g. bookshelf) prices change.
One day they will let us trade eight HQ staves for one HQ+1 staff like the SMNs with a Bahamut. Same for Obis. And Elemental Grips. Yeah.
That's why it's a dialogue box option and not a trade in my fake dialogue quote! :D
You learned that much? I'm impressed, that is why your whm gears are so crappy?(Cutriss - Phoenix - FFXIAH.com)
I'd be happy if they asked for Dark Ixion horns and Khim mats.
Fuck Dabos and Viper Dust.
Yeah, since people didn't like the alliteration attempts riffing on Toth's comment, I figured some sarcastic goblin dialogue about why he wants to take away all our items would be on topic.
(FWIW some EX items can be sold to NPCs.)
Then again, I think all the "AV drops for 80 slots!" were joking too, the closest those came to serious was that they seriously think Square will do something goofy.
After you unlock 80 slots the goblins provide new synth recipes, wait and see.
