I find it odd, that people find a reason to be negatively vocal about another person's internet practices. Twitter harms you? Seriously? Facebook impedes your life? Really? Raging at social networking is like raging at people who go to clubs. There is no reason to and it makes no sense.

None of those things directly impact me since I've obviously chosen to abstain from participating in them; that certainly doesn't mean I can't voice my dislike of them.

And yes, BG is a social network. Function may be similar, form however is not.

Are you being intentionally dense? Everyone is anonymous on this website. This is the ONLY way I will ever communicate with you. My friend down the street however I could call or check his status on twitter or facebook or whatever. I found that the more I used facebook the less I actually talked to people on the phone or hung out with them and this is true for a lot of people. It's making socialization with people you could know personally and impersonal affair. Unlike you I don't want my regular life made like /bg/.

It affects me when something like 1/5th of Congress was twittering during a speech that the fucking President is giving to them about the gravest economic crisis since 1929. In addition, this bullshit just adds to the near rampant illiteracy of most of the fuckwads the American school system produces so yeah I'd say it affects me when the future of my country and arguably the world is at stake cause people need to tweet me their inane bullshit.

Edit: And I say this as a person who has used livejournal for almost 10 years, facebook since right after it came out, etc. Twitter is just entirely fucking useless.

The thing about twitter versus other forms of social networking- whether thats person to person in a club, on BG/messageboards, or on facebook etc is pretty clear- Here on BG you can have a conversation. There is detailed interaction. Granted it's not face to face or anything but you can go beyond "hi, how are you?"

Twitter is like...imagine a society where people get together and they don't talk, they just shout out whatever they are feeling at that given time?

"I'm hungry!"

"I have two tests today!"

"I just broke up with my boyfriend!"

"better get to work early today for my presentation!"

I don't think it's wrong to use it. But I think that with anything you can draw certain conclusions about the people that do use it. Like if you're the kind of person really into baseball statistics you're probably really into math in general. If you're the kind of person that has a subscription to Science you're probably fairly well educated. If you are a guy that doesn't like sports then you're probably not very athletic. And if you use twitter then you're probably an idiot, or a douche, or an idiot douche.

Watch daily show, colbert, real time w/ bill maher, a fuckton of congress was tweeting during Obama's inauguration, in addition to the general misuse of twitter in the last few weeks by the MSM and congress i.e. John McCain, who last i checked couldn't even use a computer listing the top 10 pieces of pork in the omnibus bill or some shit.
