come on everyone knows republicans got the memo to be more "hip", so they made everyone during Obama's speech "tweet" to show disrespect and try to win over young voters for being "cool" . I doubt most of the congressman's pages are even them talking, its just their intern or staff making stuff up. the problem is now everyone is trying to be "hip and cool".

While I don't use Twitter (or had even heard about it prior to this thread), I don't see what the motivation behind the outcry is. Let people do what they want to do, why do you care? If you don't agree with the site, don't visit it. It's a social networking site, just like this place is... just in a different form.

I don't even use twitter but speaking as if it's the bane of society and it's some evil website is beyond asinine. I'm willing to bet most of the hate on twitter is simply because it's a fairly popular social networking tool that you don't understand. I'm pretty sure it's just a way to keep tabs on your friends who you can't or don't want to be bothered to schedule a date with or call on the phone. NASA has a twitter for this exact reason, it gives you quick information without having to know someone in NASA or browse around their website to get the information. It's all information but in a format some people might prefer. If somebody decides to twitter about their fucking breakfast, well that's their choice, nobody is putting you in front of a monitor forcing you to read that inane bullshit.

Right, you could do this ad nauseum but it doesn't make it a sound retort, it just makes you look stupid. The hate was initial, the retort is the hate is unfounded. Base the hate on something stable and not stupid and then you can argue that the 'hate on hate' is unfounded.

Nice straw man, I don't think hating on it is against any rules or wrong in any way. I think the reasons people hate on it aren't very strong. Sure be free to hate something for the sake of hating it but that won't stop me from pointing out weak the reasons for that hate are. Good try, though.

Twitter for me is kinda like IM. I have a bunch of people I follow and we have public conversations about thing we think about during the day. You don't really get that part of it until you build up a bit of a network, so that's probably why people don't get it right out.

I usually don't write things like "I'm hungry", I try to write things that people can relate and respond to. But of course I'm not immune to a bit of a whinge occasionally either.
I also follow people like Stephen Fry who writes awesomely amusing anecdotes about his times out filming the remake of the Douglas Adams series "Last Chance to See" (as well as other things), and a bunch of comic artists and others who write interesting updates about things. Recently I was following the local news radio station in Melbourne where the bushfires were that claimed so many lives My ISP has a helpdesk there, my web hosting company too, my local member of parliament and my local council respond to messages via Twitter too.

My prime minister also writes frequent updates, as does the opposition leader, and a whole host of humorous "fakes" that parody the whole thing.

Sure, when you glance at it you don't immediately get it. I didn't either. Now it's fun and interesting for me, like IM without the feeling you need to stick around and pay attention to the people writing ;P

I never gave "annoyance" as a reason for the hate on twitter being weak. I said it was a viable way of communicating information via social networking and as such, wasn't simply bullshit. It's just in a format some people may not be used to and maybe do not agree is an appropriate format for providing information. The fact that you produced 'annoyance' as one of my reasons is yet another straw man too, so you're either a terrible troll or really just failing to follow the conversation.

The key to using twitter is not having friends who post their fucking breakfasts and inane bullshit. I like it because I have a few friends around the country who I don't talk to even on monthly basis, but I can keep up with and communicate with them more easily via twitter.

Twitter is only as obnoxious and annoying as your friends - if twitter sucks for you, get friends that aren't inane self-important morons.

I'll admit I haven't used twitter, didn't even know what it was til the Presidential Speech. But I used facebook and hated every minute of it. I think the negative impacts these sites have on proper communication and socialization outweigh the benefits. Every time I hear people talking about myspace or facebook to their friends when they are face to face I want to rip their voice boxes out.

I felt the same way about talking IRL to people about FFXI - but that's not a problem with FFXI, it's a problem with talking about the cyberspacez IRL. You just sound like a tool.

I still maintain that it is different. These sites do not affect how I socialize with RL friends. The social networking sites do. It may not be as bad for most of us because we grew up without them for the most part but I am honestly worried about the "myspace" generation that is growing up now.

There is nothing beneficial or positive about Twitter in any way, shape or form. It's on par with being obsessed with reading tabloids every minute of the day. However, it is but one of the many tumors on the ass of modern society.

I now hate Twitter even more. For now, for the first time ever, I agree with Miokomioko.
