daft punk is a group that runs on samples, which is completely fine, but there's a difference between taking a whole bar from one song and looping it than taking half a note from hundreds of songs and putting it together.

I think sciencebear's point is that a lot of DP's songs take huge portions of a song and add very little (Robot Rock being one of the more egregious examples). Other artists take smaller samples from many sources making a more original creation. I'm not a very big electronic music guy, I think a good example of sampling done right is:

in regards to DP music...I think the beauty and the majesty (over wrought, maybe? lol) is in the composition...now, i agree that can be pretty thin gruel...but im listening to DP b/c I like the sound...makes me wanna dance and gets me revved up, and i think that is all they are going for...


its kinda like the concept of "found art" in abstract art...look at Marcel Duchamp's Mona Lisa for a reference, or the work of Robert Rauschenberg (Tauschenberg maybe?)

the way i see it is, they take good beats that they have heard, and nobody would have known about and put them into the mainstream, both those samples which i have heard before are from bands i bet 90% of the population has no idea who they are or never would of heard of those unless daft punk sampled it. basically keeping the other bands creations alive

You're carrying on and crying like they using nothing but samples in every song they write, which is simply untrue. If they were that big of frauds they would be generally panned by the music community which they are not.

They are both musicians and were in an indie band before they started Daft Punk, yeah they used some samples and gave credit where it was due but they also write they own music and they add another creative flavor to something that's already been done. Being creative doesn't only include creating something from scratch, I kind of pity you because you have such a poorly defined concept of what art is.

They are hailed by music fans and critics alike ranging from mainstream to underground for their songs, ingenuity, and performances.

You don't know shit about music but you're trying to climb the hater tree with hater accusations and a half ass argument that doesn't come even close to accurately delving into an informed opinion on the subject.

this is kind of "bfd?" territory. it's like how people rag on crystal castles for ripping off too much from obscure chiptune guys who aren't going anywhere and imo aren't doing anything that's really all that interesting when considered alone. i don't really like the idea of art being property, and in response to that there's something really attractive to me about "stealing" it and making something even better with the pieces.

you're saying i don't know shit about music, when you're defending one of the biggest mainstream music bands. if you didn't notice, i stated that running on samples is fine. i'm an electronica music producer and know a couple big artists; we all sample. i'm just saying that the samples that they are using are literally full bars. they're hits (harder, one more time, robot rock, voyager, digital love, around the world, da funk, aerodynamic, and a few more; don't remember all on top of my head) are bars which just have a couple primitive beats and bass lines thrown over them.

&, 150% sure i have a better taste in music than you.
