HIS HD 4870.
HIS HD 4870.
Just as a follow up to anyone else going to read this. I purchased the 4850 with a Q6600 quad core processor and the game runs amazing. No driver conflicts/glitching/issues. 29 fps everywhere with weather/draw distance etc (haven't tested events yet though).
test dynamis and whitegate for me, i want to get a new card and sell this 260
4870, maxed all settings, 16xAF etc. on water 29.9 FPS anywhere.
Anyone else will pretty much tell you the same.
which brand of 4870?
seems like a shitload of wasted money for ffxi, gogo 30fps.
I love my 4870x2 though.
HD4870 or HD4870X2 will hug and kiss OP's spec
X2 is far far far too expensive. adds almost 50% of the price onto my system from the reg HD4870. Either way, looks like i'll be going with the HD4870 :D thanks for the advice all.
The 4870 is pretty sick. If you set reasonable fan speeds (the default seems to let the card get way hotter than it needs to), you can get some really good overclocks out of the card really easily as well. Most everyone I've heard who's had one, just with the stock fan, has been able to cap out its overclock on Catalyst control center (790MHz core / 1100 Mhz memory). I recently tried my Sapphire a bit farther using ATI Tray tools, and got above 860MHz core before I was seeing artifacts (set at 850 right now) without any increases in voltage. Combined with the memory increase, I'm seeing like 9+FPS increases in runs of the Crysis GPU benchmark from this, all from a card that was already performing quite well in comparison to the competition at stock settings.
Everyone else has pretty much answered your questions so I'll just give a 'review' of one of the 4850 Cards ~
I purchased THIS card for my recently finished new pc, FFXI Onry for the most part (Random Delta Force games, and SC) and it runs amazingly well. Ein(32ppl), Dynamis(25+), WG, Full settings, draw distance20, I have yet to go below 25FPS with mostly hanging around 28.9/29.2 -- Opened up another FFXI Window both windows full settings(Ein environment) - never droped below 20-23FPS per window.
I absolutely love this card and the only reason I bought it was because someone from here recommended it on a previous topic.
This is obviously a card for someone with a budget ~ My budget was $150. For the price I do not feel you can do better especially vs nVidia having such conflicts with FFXI/Vista type machines.
Can list other specs of pc if any interest.
I have the Asus 4850 and love it I run about the same FPS as Clasic with all settings to the max. Love IT for the price Newegg.com - ASUS EAH4850 TOP/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
Currently I have a HIS HD 4870 for performance testing sent from the company themselves. Can't move it to water due to the contract liability but when I'm fully complete with some numbers. You can check this thread in the future since I'll probably be ordering 2x 4870's very soon on water.

one more note, if you're not running over 1680x1050 then the asus top 4850 is IMHO the best bang for your buck. factory overclocked... just need to adjust the fanspeed and your golden. For a mostly FFXI machine you're not going to be able to get much more then that. I've used them on multiple builds, and can get pretty steady 28+ FPS in every situation (... every...whitegate AH, throw some bodies at DL dynamis... pretty much everything)
btw: the ati catalyst 'overclocking' gui is pretty much crap... I would not rely on it.
