Hope nobody else has posted this already.

Didn't think our game would do very good when they got to it in this series of articles, but what do I know? lol

    wat

FFXI's first ten levels are pure horror, and at this point in the game there isn't much of a community since the starter towns are fairly empty.

And more importantly, there's the Strolling Sapling. If I commit to another ten levels, I can kill it.
    Haha, loved that read.

I want to kill a monster in the Konschtat Highlands quite badly. More than want - I aspire to it.
Refreshing to read the opinion of someone who hasn't been jaded by years and years playing the game.

Makes me remember when I first came around that corner in a thunderstorm and lightning lit up the Crag of Dem. It's still a fantastic world, it just looks less amazing through familiarity.

Early FFXI is pure nostalgia <3 I even had sound turned on and whenever I hear Saruta music now I go like aww. However, my first 30 FFXI minutes were spend learning how to walk. I discovered the AH after a couple of days. Oh man.

It took me FOREVER to find "the monsters." aka my way out of windy. Then of course I died almost instantly at the hands of a yag and it took me hours again to find my way out.

I try a few times, but I know in my heart that the dream is over. I can't beat this tiny sentient tuber. It's still too soon.

Oh, the joys of using a laptop-style keyboard and finding that without a numpad you had to hit the mouse scroll wheel to open the main menu... those were the days. None of this kings nonsense, or finding the right job mix for missions, or worrying about inventory limitations. Just pure, simple frustration at every key on the board making me say [gibblefrazbjazgak] in Bastok Mines while around me, tens of new players are doing the same thing.

Kinda reminds me why I still play this game to be honest. If there's something I've fought and can't kill yet you can bet your ass that is going to be my focus until it is dead.

I remember when i first started it took my 12 levels before i knew that you could rest HP by pressing *

usually i was just dying hping or hoping a mage would pass by to cure me.

or at first when i played BLM the first time, no idea why but lv 9 was my bitch, i think i downlevled to 8 and relevel to 9 like 20 times lol

Figuring out the macro system solo was another interesting thing the Tenlevel tester didn't even mention. There was nothing in the old FFXI user manual about <st> <stnpc> <lastst> etc. but I hope that's changed since 2003. I wonder if he even noticed the macro bar?

    Spoiler: show
For that matter, some folks still haven't heard about typing in <a##> for your alliance members instead of their fullname or tab targeting. I found out just a few days ago you can press the POV button while in Mog House Layout for a different view, heh.

Haha, good read. I'm surprised we won too. The funniest parts though are the comments:

I spent 2 years in Vana' Diel in that time i leveled every class to 75 and completed half of the end game content and made a HUGE amount of friends especially Japanese and American...and as an added bonus met my now ex girlfriend(were still great friends) whilst helping a bunch of noobs in the Konschtadt highlands.

There's something about the community in FF that no over MMO comes close to achieving(and i know ive played em all) i don't know if its the difficulty that brings everyone together or just the love of FF as a whole but for whatever reason you wont find a more friendly and more mature crowd than the FF crowd, i loved every second spent in VD (LOL yup it was shortened to that rather tasteless Abbreviation) and half of my friends list still play it on a daily basis and are continually haranging me to get back in something i'm loathe to do as i just dont have the time anymore

Yes FF is bastard hard to get into and yes you have to pay a monthly fee (which is nowt compared to one night in the boozer) but i can't recommend it enough all the nay sayers are dweebs with no patience no imagination prolly no money and a huge spoilt western chip on their shoulders (equips the mighty +1 tunic of flame)

    /Digs out play online password

    Oooh Decent Challenge
FFXI is an unfortunate game to have in the Ten Level test because pretty much after you hit 10 the game changes quite a bit. Past this point soloing becomes practically impossible so its off to one of the high lvl areas (e.g. Vulkrum Dunes) to get a party of 6 and slog out with some very strong monsters.
    Etc...

NoScript blocked the comments for me entirely, good eye, Epical.

Takes me back to the days of, "running in circles around a mob makes you evade more."

Also it took me about a week to discover the AH, I was buying gear from merchants in Bastok, and all my gil came from quests.
