Heh, I remember selling crystals for 14g a piece to the shops in Bastok Markets for my gil. And then buying armor from said shops. About level 8(which I was stuck on for a long ass time), I found out you could use the auction house, and I went there, purchased an axe, and all of a sudden, everything got that much easier. lol

Oh, I discovered the auction house right away... I just couldn't figure out how to go inside and buy stuff. How are you supposed to get in when there are no doors?!

funny how we all use to be there, nude no gear in the dunes with gimped to hell gear, a war/monk tank up to 40's

    and what now?

-we make a thread and make fun of players as low as lvl 37 >.> lol how things have changed.

-found out haste caps(and how godlike it is)

-int/ele skill, super int builds lol

-tp mods for every WS in the game...

so much crap has changed with what we have learned. what i wonder is if the next MMO some of us move onto will also be so easy to find out all this info on. or will it be NEW

Oh crap, JP characters broke the boards.

EDIT: Fixed, thanks whoever did that.

FFXI keeps most of the important data hidden, don't know what you mean by "so easy to find" - I'm always impressed by our community that we bother to test things like the WS and nuke equations.

The "User's Guide" in the FFXI loading screen in POL is actually packed full of information, and updated with surprising frequency. I'm pretty sure there's a page with <st>, etc on it, but I could be wrong on that specific.

As for my own early Gustaburg memories, I know Bubbly Bernie references are cliche, but he really was the bane of my FFXI existence for about a week when I first started (my Strolling Sapling, I guess). I still assumed at that point that since I had been given the quest, it should be possible for me to complete it. After numerous failures and finally gaining a couple more levels, I went back and owned him and it was very gratifying lol

    Good read.

He shoulda made it up to lvl 20 though and understand the pain of the dunes... maybe he woulda burned the disks instead of keeping it installed!

I think during the second tier of competition, he'll go lv10 to lv20. Someone needs to tell him about Korroloka Tunnel for 14~18 (give or take a level).

Although the gate guard saying "experienced adventurers like yourself" might crack him up a bit.

I remember walking up and talking to NPCs as if they were real players. Eventually some guy came up to me and was like, "what are you doing?"

Another thing I remember, I was borrowing some guy's fang necklace, and I logged off completely forgetting to give it back. I get a tell the next day, "no wonder you logged off so fast, you had my necklace! I'm telling everyone you are a thief, that item is expensive, you can't just keep it!" I obviously gave it back, but the funny part is that the guy turned out to be one of those early-on rich NA players (these were very far and in between, I never understood how people were getting so rich so fast back in 03/04.)

I was in East Saruta until RDM15 soloing with a dagger. Level 9 mobs die easy to a 15, but it takes a whoooole lot of them. Wasp Sting really sucked though

And yes, I was using the dagger the game gave me.

And to think, that was before the EP update lol. Now you can get to 15 no problem doing that.

The first ten levels can vary wildly from player to player and job to job. However, after leveling more than half of the FFXI jobs to that point, I would have to say the early levels encapsulate all that's good about the game. Exploration, technical advancement, improved application of skills, etc. You can experience all that at a surprisingly low level and in a relatively short amount of time.

IMO, the real problem with this article is that the game becomes more tedious and dull after level 10, because you start being forced into the painfully formulaic PT system.

I don't necessarily see partying as a bad thing, more like a change of pace compared to other MMO's systems.. the problem is lfp times and valkurm's "10% of parties are actually decent" factor. I've always hated how random the game is at low levels, hitting for 0's and missing 50% of the time, taking 30 damage a hit as tank when your max hp is 150 etc., however I've always preferred a good 6 man party, + SC'ing and MB'ing over any kind of soloing so if the guy gets lucky with good parties, we might do exceptionally well in the next stage too.

Oh man ton of nostaglia in this thread. I remember making my first character in Windurst just to buy a bronze zagnal because I couldn't find the weapon shop in Sandoria. Didn't figure out how to /p or /sh for a while either so I ended up saying everything in /say and ended up looking like I had schizophrenia. Trains were also hilarious, some of the really bad ones could lock some zones down for hours.

When I started off as a RDM, it took me ages to get to Level 10. But this was partially because in a shared house we had:

    http://www.yinfor.com/blog/archives/...sys_wrt54g.jpg

    This piece of fucking shit.

    And then we had:

Who torrents 24/7 and I was powerless to do anything, I R0ed a lot of the time. This resulted in many many many many deaths.

I remember thinking that Elvaans had something wrong with their necks.

    >.>

    <.<

    ...

I still get hit by that wave of nostalgia every time I hear the Saruta/Windy music. I'm so glad I started in Windy, the other cities are kind of meh. Windy was so the best place to start in too, back during inflation, because silk stacks were 50-60k and beehive chip stacks were 20-30k, meaning I made a fortune in lowbie gear early on. ^^

The most jarring thing to get used to about FFXI for me (besides the elf models) was how slow everything moved. Coming from another MMO (Asheron's Call) where you could fire off 20 bow shots in 10 seconds and having to wait 10 seconds just for my mithra to finish her attack round was tough at first. Now I'm so used to it though that I don't even think twice about it.

But the elvaans are still weird.

Tenlevels doesn't seem to have run into any high level characters in the starter zones; I hadn't either (and also started in Bastok) until a bunch of us died inside the Palborough Mines. If he continues missions, it'll happen, searching for drops way too early, haha.

Had a full-AF level 60 DRG/whm randomly walk past, raise our party and we were all amazed... anyone else have something like that happen? Nowadays only the rarest of the rare gear evokes the same reaction.
