Creator has said in the past that hes only creating the *realm* in rendition of the game, and nothing else. But he has hinted many, many times in the past things such as.

I know its kinda early for this, but I've been thinking of doing a spin off once this game is complete.

That could lead to a possible full-fledged remake of LA. I can only hope.

I'm not a guru on copyright. But as long as he stays non-profit and gives all rights to Nintendo or w/e he should be okay right? I've read a lot of people saying on his forums that the reason why he isn't "releasing" a full-fledged game is because of that. And if he does a release he will do it under wraps.

LA was a challange :3 I bet it would be a little easier in 3D because it would
be just a little easier to understand the puzzles... plus maybe then getting the

Since he's using a copyrighted character and game in it's entirity, no he's not ok. Technically he must have permission from nintendo to do anything with this. AP and Disney both are notorious for going after people (AP you're only allowed to use if you're on the wire or pay; Disney is just fucking insane). I hope Nintendo let's it go though, would be cool to see.

I think the law is, you're allowed to make fan creations, so long as you're not stepping on the toes of the company. For example fan art is fine, but not remaking a game and handing it out.

Nintendo probably didn't give a shit because they were never gonna translate it themselves anyway. If Mother 3 ever does make it over here legitimately, it'll probably be on DS (or whatever's next) and so it won't really be competing with the fan translation as it'll be upgraded.

Unless Nintendo hopes to rerelease Link's Awakening, they might not give a shit about this either.

On the topic of old Nintendo remakes, does anyone know about how the Metroid 2 re-make is going? It was looking pretty sweet.

SE did a C&D on the Chrono Trigger 3D project (which wasn't even a game, it was just going to be select scenes from the game) because it was better than what they could come up with. Then they stupidly ported CT to the DS without making a really good 3D version.

SE are just assholes. I don't think Nintendo really cares about anything this guy is going to do with a game they're never going to release.

There's a similar story of a guy who owned a tavern and the guy's name was Mickey Mouse. He named his bar Mickey Mouse's Tavern and the logo was a cartoon mouse with glasses. Disney ordered a copyright violation and threatened to take the guy to court. They settled before it went that far with him changing the name of the bar to appease Disney. Professor of mine told me about it the other day when discussing copyright; Disney is completely fucked up.

By law "derivative works" are not OK. Recreating someone else's trademark is fine, but as soon as you start publicly displaying it, selling it, or distributing it whatsoever, you will get in a lot of trouble... especially with a huge company like Nintendo who is based heavily on it's famous trademarks like Link/Mario/etc.

There are people at companies like Nintendo and Disney, who's sole job is to scour the internet ,all day, every day, for anything they can send a C&D to. There's a constant search for anything infringing on copyrights because a) it's protecting their brand and their market, and b) sometimes it's extremely profitable.

There's a law about the 15% change you have to apply to something to consider it a "parody" and actually stand up to a C&D... however, this "15%" is incredibly subjective and comes down to what the judge thinks about it when you're standing in front of him. And, chances are, Nintendo will have better lawyers.

I'ma have to agree with this. Only a matter of time before this guy draws "Nintendo lawyer aggro" so to speak. If I were Nintendo, I'd sooner offer this dude a job than see him as a potential threat if the work was solid.

The addition of a 3rd dimension adds an infinite plane, sounds like 15% to me!

Speaking on the Mother 3 translation, Nintendo/HAL both were told and both of their responses were around the lines of "Wow, I didn't know it was that popular over there. Maybe we'll localize the next one more seriously"

This would be so nice. Besides A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game. Sucks that he doesn't plan on remaking it entirely.

Chrono Trigger 3d remake actually looked impresive (had characters, animations and all), but between cheap 3d model and sprite, I can't say I care much.
