Any news in the new york post I would take with a grain of salt, Its practically a tabloid. That said, If it is true I agree with Devek that its probably a set up.

The civil-commitment law has already been addressed on an episode of SVU

I remember finding out about this group, because their acronym was censored in PSO.

Hmm, this civil commitment shit reeks of... well, shit.

I'm all for punishing sex offenders and keeping them from entering society and being able to harm people, especially children, but that needs to be handled by definite punitive measures set forth by the law. If those measures are not tough enough, change the statutes. Civil commitment pretty much changes the law to state "this crime is punishable by indefinite imprisonment." That should not be the punishment for any crime, because there is no limit to it. If five consecutive life sentences in prison should be the punishment for raping and killing a kid (and it should, if not the death penalty), then make that the law, don't just say "well the law states you can be in prison for 30 years but we're just gonna keep you there for 50 because what you did is fucking sick." I agree with keeping the fuckers in prison but not with the way it's happening.

That said, it would be nice if NAMBLA simply took a clue from Heaven's Gate and started mixing their drinks with cyanide.

Don't worry, they die quickly in prison anyway.

Sex offenders have it pretty tough in society. No one wants them and every city tries its best to make it as difficult on them to find a place to live as possible. There is no scientific evidence that the restrictions on them curb future sex offenses and some would argue that the additional stress would could spark behavior cycles that lead to future offenses.

If I was a sex offender, the first thing I would do is leave the country and go live somewhere else. I have a friend who got convicted of sexual battery for slapping a girl on the ass. There was nowhere for him to live where he could send his kids to a decent school, so he just bounced and went to Germany once his parole was up.

Don't say that if you do nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about because that is not even true. When The Evidence Lies - TIME The police got caught in faking forensic evidence in order to bust people. There was one guy who was convicted of rape, but the dna evidence vindicated him when it was later retested.. He filed a lawsuit because the terms of his parole was for him to attend sex offender treatment, which requires an admission to complete. The state had effectively told him that if he did not admit to the crime, he had to stay in prison when the state falsified the evidence that put him there in the first place!

If society wants to push people out, they should give them somewhere to go. I'm thinking little communes where sex offenders can safely live and work. People could also stop being stupid, because statistically if your kid does end up getting assaulted it will by someone you know and trust and not some stranger that moved in your neighborhood.

You do realize that if it weren't for these laws then the sex offender would become a neighbor you'll eventually come to know and trust, right?

I agree in part. Sex crimes are too generalized. I had a friend in College that had sex with a 16 year old girl at a frat party (She had a phony College ID to get into the party) Her father found out had him arrested and now he has to register for the rest of his life. 8 years later he is married with 2 kids and wanted to buy a house in a good neighborhood but was denied.

The thing needs to be scaled. There is absolutely no leeway in these laws for degree of the crime. Spanking someone in the ass is just as bad in the eyes of the law in terms of having to register as a sex offender as a Serial rapist. I'm for Scaling it based on the crime. But good luck getting a political to back something like that up. He would be seen as being lenient on sex offenders.

Well, our society says that sex is worse than murder.

I live right across the street from an elementary school. If I went out for a jog and stabbed the first lady I ran in to, to death, I would be allowed to move back into my house when I got out of prison. If instead I grabbed her tits and said, "honk!", as I passed by I would be forced to find somewhere else to stay because I would now be a huge danger to society.

If I was a lawmaker, I would make it part of the jury trial. The state would be left with a burden to prove that the person committed a crime and also be forced to prove that the person is should have to register (with evidence and data). We already do this in death penalty cases here, where they have to make a case that the person committed the crime and that the person deserves the death penalty. However, in the case of sex offenders it might have to be split in to a different phase to allow psychological testing and such to be done...

I'm actually running for office in the next election, so I think about these sort of things a lot. There are all sorts of things our state does that makes no sense.
