Because they aren't traveling the same speed in either circumstance.
First, it assumes a frictionless surface. It also assumes elastic collision. Not really sure what you're trying to get at. Apply those equations to the Semi v Hummer? If so, then m1 and m2 are not equal, as is shown here.
edit: All I was really trying to say is that newtonian physics doesn't explain physics as accurately as calculus based physics.
