    Making FFXI look better?

Okay so I was just bored reading forums and came across this...

    Big pic inc

now I have some good graphics on my FFXI but how could I get it to look like his^?

Mine is at the point where it cant make straight lines because you can see the jagged edge of a pixel so it looks like tetris blocks.

I know someone out there is running FFXI in some insane resolution or knows how to make it this way beyond for maximum enjoyment...

    So anyone know how to?

Look over this (specifically the background resolution section), and you'll be able to improve your graphics.

I doubled the resolution and it really made a difference, but tripling it only jumped my CPU usage up 40% and really looks the same.

Thanks again for the link, it looks great!

Thats because the maximum is 2048x2048.

your grafikcard driver should be able to emulate AA and ASF for FFXI which will make the game look a lot better

On this topic, has anyone anywhere figured out how to turn off Level-of-Detail jumping? For example:

Turning off MIP mapping is supposed to render distant objects in full detail but it doesn't on my machine.

The only thing turning off MIP mapping seems to do is make shit in the background "shimmer" like crazy. Unless I misunderstood completely, the only thing MIP mapping does is substitute lower resolution TEXTURES for stuff in the distance; there is no way to get rid of the annoying "pop" that models make when you get closer to them. At least, not a satisfactory level. I've ran around in East Ron with MIP mapping off and on varying levels and the trees still pop to the normal models at annoying times, I think it's just the game's engine sadly.

I haven't clicked on the links but I'm assuming they only talk about resolution.

In-game, you can control the "Clipping Plane" but even at the max setting you can't see far enough.

Out of game, I am fairly certain you can change registry settings to further push back the clipping plane. I don't have a link handy, does anyone know more about this?
NOTE: I have never done this, but I have heard that no matter how far back you push the clipping plane, you won't be able to see monsters from farther away. Therefore, like increased resolution, this is purely a graphics upgrade and I personally don't see how it could give any unfair advantages. I'd consider doing these things (resolution and clipping) if my computer were better.

Even with an increased 3D clipping plane, though, the game has a very nasty LOD texture pop as you approach objects that are already inside what is rendered. This is the case even if you max out the rendered distance (which does make the game look great, until you move forward and all the objects start changing detail.) If Auspice is right, then there's nothing to be done.

I've set my background res to 2048x2048 and my game doesn't look anything like the OP's. Mip map set at 4, everything else at max, except bump mapping is off.

I'm not talking about the clipping plane, I'm talking about the low poly models popping into the regular ones at a certain distance. AFAIK there is no way to lower this since turning off MIP mapping only appears to get rid of the low res texture substitutions that are done(which I actually LIKE since the shimmering without MIP mapping annoys the shit out of me).

Yeah, this is the real problem. There has to be some way to disable the LOD popping.

Is there a way to increase the draw distance without a 3rd party app? I guess this would pretty much be limited to a registry change, but I don't see any info like that in the alla link above.

Nope, before the windower plugin came out there was an actual program you could launch that would increase your draw distance but it's not a registry change since it's an in game config.

Sadly, this isn't true. Final Fantasy XI does not support anti aliasing.

The mip mapping option does not function in a logical way. There isn't an option to disable them completely, mip maps will always be used. You only control how they are applied (although I'm not sure of the exact workings of each setting.) I suggested a windower plugin to give users manual control over these features, it included a nice write up on how some of this stuff works. Although I no longer play FFXI, it would greatly please me to see a plugin like that get made. If you're interested, go and bump the thread or something.
