I swear the only people who play XI within 30 miles of where I live are all people I've personally gotten into the game. I don't haven't had a customer come in and talk about XI in probably 6 months or better. OHIO SUCKS!
This actually happened:
ME: "Can I have a copy of Final Fantasy: Wings of the Godess for the PC?"
GAMESTOP: "We do not have any of those available for regular sale. You should pre-order it next time to insure a copy."
ME: "You realize by forcing me to pre-order my games you have essentially made your entire outfit here pointless right? That line you just gave me about pre-ordering makes your job moot. I realize you are trying to reduce overhead, but why would I bother to drive to a store to receive a copy of something if I am forced to abandon the convenience a store provides since I have to either come here a second time to pre-order it, or pre-order it from you online and then come here to pick it up? I should just pre-order the game online and have it shipped if that is your 'company policy'. You understand that, right?
GAMESTOP: *blinks* "Hmmm. You have a point. I guess I can give you this copy no one has picked up yet."
ME: "..."
I kinda wanted to burn down the store, but I needed to rush home to start the 10 hour download. :-/
Filling out pre-orders and subscriptions as a Gamestop employee became mandatory per month to stay hired like, 2 years ago, even for store management, it's pretty much programmed into employee training now like a combo deal at a fastfood joint. I know 2 GS Managers who actually play FFXI.
Like a lot of the other people posting here, I went to go buy a copy of WOTG for my 360 a few months ago, called ahead to make sure they had it. So I went in, gave the clerk my name, he hands it over and is all. "Surprised this game isn't dead, it's all about WoW man. You should get into it." ~_~
@Auspice: I don't know a single person in my town or at my university in San Diego that played FFXI besides my friends that all got into it and my brother(Sometime in HS) (All have quit except me...lol.) Infact, our dorm room was routinely left open during the day, people used to walk in and ask me wth I was playing, only one guy ever has recognized it and actually played it. Most people would ask "Oh, is this like a rip off of WoW?" ...
Hey, I'd be playing TWEWY/EBA if I worked at Gamestop when I didn't have a customer. Since standing behind a desk gets boring as hell. Most the people I see at the gamestops in my area are either half asleep or sitting there playing games, till you walkup to the counter.
When I started working at Funcoland back in '02, it was sort of a 'well, if you get them, great, if not, oh well.'
over the next year or two, it gradually evolved into, the store has to get X# of each per week, to X% per week, to each employee needs to get X% of each, to 'if every employee isn't at least doubling the target every week, they're not doing their job'. this of course lead to most everyone developing all kinds of shady tactics to inflate their numbers just to keep up. one of my favorites was the old 'trade 3, get $10 credit' deal, we'd just neglect to tell them they got extra store credit for the trades and tell them they had the option of a free GI sub or two pre-orders.
after a few months of that, the RM started poking around trying to figure out why this one district was suddenly doing so well. yeah, a lot of people lost their jobs, lol.
I much rather my FFXI experience picking up the expansion the day it comes out over my WoW experience. Every expansion for FFXI it was just in and out less than 20mins.
WoW it took me 2 hours to get WoTLK and this is coming 20mins early before the time I was told to be there. The line went out from gamestop and wrapped all the way around the fountain which was ridiculous, I have never ever seen a line like that for a game in my life.
Not even madden NFL has lines like that when that game comes out which has a huge following on release day every year.
Wow, no wonder why ppl hate Gamestop. They're usually a last resort for me anyway, although they sometimes did come through for me when other places like Wal-Mart/Best Buy failed.
Anyway, I hope they show more news tomorrow or Sunday. I'm hoping they allow skill ups in level syncs for players and automantons. I am really enjoying PUP, but since all I can find are level syncs keeping my puppet's skills up to date past 37 will be hell.
What I find even more funny is that Gamestop still lists the stand alone expansion packs at a higher price than this collection. Every Gamestop in my area still carries at least 1 copy of ToAU and WoTG for PC, so it's funny to watch them undercut themselves.
Yeah Ohio does pretty much suck. I live in the Cleveland area. My mall's gamestop has about 5 people working there who all play FFXI on and off. A couple of the employees play WoW but most of them agree FFXI is better, so I don't have to listen to the WoW spiel... they know better.
When ToAU came out, my ex picked up our copies of the expansion from that same GameStop (probably long before those people worked there). I hadn't preordered one because I didn't think I would have to, but the guy sold my ex one of the reserve copies ^^; So I got someone else's preordered copy haha.
Went to 2 different Gamestops today on my way back from Toys R Us (RE5) and neither had the Vanadiel Collection. The 2nd one actually had an employee that was familiar with it and suggested the starter disc ($1.99+ tax). I didn't need codes, just the install disc, so if anyone else just needs the install disc pick that up instead. It doesn't have WotG on it, but it has everything else.
I've run into a couple FFXI playing GS employees here in Cincinnati, but usually they're just casual players. My story is the same as most in that everyone around that plays FFXI (That I know about) are people that I got into it... Ironically, I tried to quit before and one of the aforementioned friends dragged me back...
As with many who've posted here, GS is my last resort, but I have no problems when I enter a GS with no set goal in mind. Sometimes I'll end up walking out with some new game that I had forgotten was coming out, other times I just play a demo or something. It's usually about 50/50 when I go into one for anything specific though. I've only ever pre-ordered 1-2 games and I've never bought a subscription. They've never succeeded in selling me anything I didn't want though... I intended to pre-order said game(s) before I ever entered the store.
Hearing thse Gamestop stories is amusing. I remember when Gamestop's started opening here in Germany and I was so exicted, it was a videogame store lol. Then I went in lol....same service as described by everyone, plus all their games were opened, the game covers had those horrible price-tag stickers plastered over them which don't want to come off....service is horrible and the employees were WOW nerds....
Anyway, if I want to buy a game I just order it from amazon. I have a feeling that everything I buy is from amazon nowadays. And if I sometimes feel the need to buy a game in person I just go to one of those huge electronic-stores like Saturn or Mediamarkt in Germany. But Gamestop....*shudders*.
I agree with you 100% there Buttons, I will stick to Best Buy for games. Even though their employees can be about as smart as GameStop employees.
