    GDC 2009

So I looked around and did not see a GDC thread yet. Anyone else going?

Anyone have any particular things they are looking forward to this year?

I have not decided which keynote speeches I want to go to yet but I am looking forward to the booth crawl this year at least.

Anyway post your expectations for GDC this year.

Yeah GDC is in SF this year at the Moscone center.

I am looking forward to seeing the new Crytek 3 engine supposed to have some improvements over the last engine plus support for consoles.

oh cool. I think I have to fly home on Thursday night so I won't be there on Friday.

What will you be exhibiting? If you don't mind me asking.

Ive seen a few nice things come from the confrence but nothing too big, I still want to see the private screening gameplay demo they showed at GDC of GOW 3. Nothing else really intrested me except an RPG announced coming from quicksilver called risen, announced for 360.

I can't wait for them to release the info on "The Secret World". The press is meeting with them at the GDC but rumor states that the info won't be released till April 7.

So I just got back from GDC and it was really fun. I got the chance to go to both keynote speeches. I would say the Nintendo one definitely held my interest longer as it was really in depth about Miyamoto's game design process though it was funny that it was very similar to Miyamoto's keynote speech 2 years ago. Other than talking about Miyamoto and stroking his ego a lot on how much of a genius he is, he announced the new Zelda game and showed off a climbing game that is going to take advantage of the balance board.

It was very cool to get the free copy of Beat Heaven. I am not at all into those types of games but it is really simple and cute and addicting. I have been playing it since. The entire game is played with the stylus and you have to tilt your DS sideways so you are looking at it vertically. Basically it plays music to mundane or normal non music related stuff and you have to match it up to the beat. So for instance one level is playing ping pong to music and another is filling robots with fuel. It is quirky and fun and you can pick it up for 5 minutes at a time for that quick gaming fix. It was really smart of them to give the game away after the speech because I as well as several of my co-workers never would have bought it. It is also prompting several of my co-workers to go buy DS's because they do not have them yet.

The Kojima keynote on the other hand was really focused on game design and how Kojima trying to overcome design impossibilities naturally led him to the stealth genre and ultimately Metal Gear. He started all the way back when he was developing for the MSX2 and continued through the process up to the PS3. Sadly he did not give us PS3's or a copy of MGS4

Other than that I was able to go to a good session on the production pipeline for Gears 2 cinematics. My favorite session I went to was a session all about the design decisions made to make Left 4 Dead a replayable multiplay co-op experience. It was really well done and it went over each SI and how they were carefully designed to tackle an issue and help encourage players to stick together. It also talked about the Director in detail and how its algorithm decides the pacing of the game.

The next session I went to was all about the art of Little Big Planet and how they came to decide what that game would look like. It was cool however those guys talked forever and did not track their time so there was no time for questions at the end. It was neat to see videos of early prototypes of LBP though. And I picked up some really cool LBP sackboy magnets!

Anyway that was my experience of GDC for the most part anyone else see or get anything cool there? Or even watch anything cool about it on TV?
