ahh haha i see me on your screen!
Simple solution for your mess of cables= Put some gutters onto the wall behind your desk and have all cables/power strips sit nicely inside.
Not my setup but here's an example

Updated my pictures on this post to be uptodate with the current setup. Didn't change the bedroom pic because only the computer's wallpaper has changed since, well that and I moved the fiber to go around the desk instead of just up into it. I like the gutter idea above, but I can't do that to my apartment, maybe in my own place one day.
Also bought one of these in order to setup a good NAS. I had a Buffalo Link 4 drive unit but one of the drives died and it doesn't 'recognize' the 1.5TB drives I tried to use in it. Tired of playing that game with NAS systems, so building my own this time. Plan to turn BackupBox into a Windows backup computer and make the NAS the GoodSync computer with something like FreeNAS or the like, moving GoodSync from BackupBox to ServerBox. Was the plan anyway, my identity recently got compromised along with the bank account so going through that joy at the moment, don't have the ability to buy the parts to propagate the case.
What do you have storage wise? I have a couple servers myself and I'm on the cuff (2 days till the check arrives) of swapping all of the drives in this server for 2tb 7200/64meg.
Spoiler: show
ServerBox is rocking a RAID6 (Areca Hardware SAS RAID with 2GB memory with a battery backup so I can use the really nice options instead) at 15TB with a hot swap spare.
BackupBox is around 800GB, I use it as a backup of 'important' files to ServerBox, but I intend to replace it with DataBox, the aforementioned NAS I'm going to build, which will also sport an Areca RAID6 with 6TB of space. Then just use BackupBox as a Windows backup, so 800GB should be plenty of space to backup all my computer's OS partitions. Currently using around 8TB of space on ServerBox, the reason for the others is backups, I have no way of affording a tape library so just using RAIDs to do so.
Nice setup, I've been using the 3ware controllers for my personal boxes. Battery backup and expanded memory of course, lol. My main array is getting expanded to 16tb raid 5, I'm moving some of the 1tb drives from that array to my secondary array to expand it to 6tb raid 5 and my HTPC has a 4tb raid 0 currently. I didn't think I'd need to expand but I'm already down to <500gigs free between my 2 current servers. How is the hot swap setup you have? I've found most setups like that to be too hot or too loud for desktop use.
Well, its in my kitchen and it is audible but by no means distracting, even when you're near it. Temperatures:

Looking to build something like this in the near future, Guessing it's going to cost an absolute bomb though.
What OS/software are you guys using?
Ext4 on ubuntu for one and windows 7 on the other. If you plan to have an array over 2tb and go the windows route you'll have to use GTP, which requires newer versions of windows. I use GTP instead of MBR on my windows array and I'm happy with it. Both routes are great, I don't seem to have any problems with either.
If you don't mind noise the NORCO RPC-4020 is one that I've heard good things about (and holds a fuckton of drives). I really like the Lian-Li case I have if you are looking for a quiet solution.
ohai
Week old image, got my new case setup now.

Damn to you people running 20TB. I got 3TB in this rig, 3.25TB in my other rig and like 1.5TB not in use and I thought that was a ton.
Trying to wrap my head around how much it would take to fill up 20 TB...
Blu-Ray backups?
I use Windows Server 2008 (x64) in ServerBox (original public release, not R2). BackupBox is WinVistax64 with a 3rd party DNS server to serve as a backup for ServerBox whenever SB goes down for updates or the like.
I only have a couple BluRay, most of it is DVD backups though. Making a digital library is something I had wanted to do for a while, and last year finally had the money to make it a possibility. Now all my old media is backed up on the server, with hopefully enough left over to get me a few years worth of stuff. I think like 5~5.5 TB is DVD backups alone. Then there is iTunes library, picture and fanfic library, etc. Its not really that hard to fill up the space though - the hard part is finding some realistic backup solution to it that doesn't cost through the roof.
I'll be moving soon enough, so nothing special here other than a decent work/leisure environment. PS3 and HDTV are in the living room.
