Going back to the server stuff again, I'm seriously throwing around the idea of building one now with my existing older PC (Intel Q6600 G0, 4GB Ram blah blah) - does anyone know if a Windows computer can have the same functionality as a Mac using "Target Disk Mode". Basically where the computer becomes a giant mass storage device that other computers connected to it via Firewire or USB can have full read and write access to directly.
My plan is to use the computer as an extension of my Macbook Pro, connecting it up via Gigabit Ethernet for general household streaming and file sharing, but also with the addition of Firewire for fast read and write access for copying tonnes of images and videos quickly (I edit videos using Final Cut Pro, so the Firewire connectivity is an absolute necessity.)
I'm wondering if it'd be easier to install OS X in a Hackintosh configuration, but then you run into problems with support for SATA Raid cards and managing RAID5 builds efficiently...
I guess this is why Drobos are so expensive...
