Darren Aronofsky Talks Robocop | Filmonichttp://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploa...10/robocop.jpg
Back in July it was announced that the director of The Fountain and Requiem for a Dream, would be directing the Robocop sequel/reboot. This meant that there was a 95% chance that the remake will not suck. Since July things have been a bit quite, as Aronofsky has been busy on other films, however he recently spoke to Empire about how things are progressing.
“It’s a real reinvention,” he told us, responding to those rumours that the movie would somehow follow on or be a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original. “Me and David Self are working on the screenplay. He’s a great, great writer and we’re trying to do something new and fresh. We’ll see what happens when the screenplay comes.”
“I’m a big fan of the original. It still holds up as an amazing film, and I think it’s more just looking at that same type of material in the 21st century and seeing where it leads us.”
If all goes to plan Robocop will be released sometime in 2010.
Stephen Fry voicing the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland | Filmonichttp://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploa...tephen-fry.jpg
The very same day Michael Sheen revealed that he would not be voicing the Cheshire Cat in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Stephen Fry revealed that he would! Commenter Michael pointed us to a BBC interview called “Five Minutes With: Stephen Fry” and Fry ‘lets the cat out of the bag’ at around the 2 minute mark.

It looks like we will be getting a rather intelligent Cheshire Cat, unless Fry alters his voice somewhat.
War of the Gods and Clash of the Titans Casting | Filmonichttp://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploa...enrycavill.jpg
I am somewhat suspicious that The Hollywood Reporter have revealed casting news for both War of the Gods and Clash of the Titans at the same time. However, it makes things interesting so I will put my suspicions aside.
War of the Gods and Clash of the Titans. Both Greek mythology-themed projects. Both currently in pre-production. Both inspired by 300 and both wanting to be released first.
THR say that Sam Worthington, who is mostly likely going to be huge by the end of 2009 after Terminator Salvation and Avatar, is in talks to play the role of Perseus in Clash of the Titans which will be directed by The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier. The film is a remake of the 1981 epic and tells the story of Zeus’ son Perseus and his battles against mythology beasts such as Medusa.
Meanwhile, Henry Cavill (The Tudors, nearly Superman in Superman Returns) is being lined up to play Theseus in War of the Gods. The film is about a war between Gods and humans.
At the moment Gods has the edge as it will begin filming in February and has a bigger budget ($85 million), whereas Titans has a smaller budget of $70 million and will start filming in April.
If you were a fan of the drama surrounding the 2008 Presidential Election then this epic battle may keep you interested in 2009. I suspect we will get accusations flying around that Sam Worthington has never put lipstick on a Minotaur, and that Henry Cavill has been associating with Hydra’s.
The Hollywood ReporterNovember 08, 2008 Over the past few weeks, Ratner has been considering signing on to direct a 21st century update of "Conan," co-produced by Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate Films, even as he pushes another high-profile project -- a fourth installment of the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise -- toward a greenlight at Paramount, where he recently set up shop. Joe Gatta and Avi Lerner of Millennium Films are producing, along with George Furla and Paradox Entertainment president and CEO Fredrik Malmberg. Meanwhile, Paramount -- eyeing the successful fourth-installment resurrections of the long-dormant "Die Hard" and "Indiana Jones" franchises -- has been gunning to get Detroit's funniest cop back on the streets for a summer 2010 release with Ratner behind the camera.
John Stevenson to direct Masters of the Universe! | Filmonichttp://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploa...se-500x228.jpg
Last October Latino Review got word from a source that Kung-Fu Panda director John Stevenson could end up directing a live action He-Man movie. We heard nothing of it for months, until now. Turns out John Stevenson is directing!
From Variety:
Stevenson said the first film came to mind when he was asked to consider the job, and the impression wasn’t a good one. He changed his mind when he went to Mattel headquarters and was shown into a secret lair that contained the visuals created by the toymaker staff.
“There was this locked bunker that you had to be escorted into,” Stevenson said. “It was filled with art, some generated by the Mattel artists, and I looked around, and said, ‘I get it.’ We started formulating a specific vision for costumes, creatures, architecture, and the creation of a mythology and look for a whole world we’ll create.”
Waldo said that Stevenson’s vision to elevate the material matched with Mattel’s desire to see He-Man become a big studio film. Mattel has also brought its “Hot Wheels” film to WB and Silver.
“John had such passion that we found ourselves trying to running to catch up with his vision,” Waldo said.
We have no release date or dates for filming, however we will probably get that info later.
This film could actually work if done right. I hope they don’t make it too child-friendly. I know Mattell have toys to sell but a cheesy fantasy movie will not be appealing!
Russell Crowe wants to make the best Robin Hood movie…ever! | Filmonichttp://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploa...sell-crowe.jpg
The latest issue of Empire magazine includes an interview with our beloved phone throwing actor Russell Crowe. In the interview he talks a little about Robin Hood, which he will start filming in April. Turns out he wants to make the best Robin Hood movie ever.
“The challenge is to make a great film. There’s no point in making the second-best Robin Hood movie. If we are going to do it, we have to do it with the thought in mind that we’ve got the chance of making the best Robin Hood movie ever. Doing a Robin Hood movie is a childhood dream; doing a bad Robin Hood movie - that doesn’t come into the dream. It’s got to be fully realised and really worth the effort - as we sit and talk it’s been 18 months of effort, and that’s the sort of stuff that people don’t see or quantify.
With Ridley Scott directing and an impressive cast including Cate Blanchett and Mark Strong, we may end up getting the best Robin Hood movie ever. However according to Wikipedia there have been over 50 adaptations since 1908, so it’ll have to be good.
Cate Blanchett confirmed for Robin Hood | Filmonichttp://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploa...tt-500x239.jpg
Two weeks ago actor Mark Strong told The Telegraph that there was a strong possibility that Cate Blanchett would be playing Maid Marian in Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood (then called Nottingham). Variety have now confirmed that she will be taking on the role alongside Russell Crowe, and filming should start around April time in the UK.
The film will be shot at a $130 million budget, benefiting from favorable exchange rates and tax credits that come from shooting in the U.K. Scott will be aiming for a PG-13 rating.
Crowe plays Robin of Loxley in an origin story of Robin Hood that hews close to historical facts of the period. Abandoned as a child, he finds community with the common people of Nottingham. Robin’s abandonment and trust issues hamper his ability to fall in love. He meets his match in Marian, a strong, independent woman.
Dominic Monaghan happy to remain a Hobbit in The Hobbit | Filmonichttp://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploa...c-monaghan.jpg
Dominic Monaghan, probably the most successful Hobbit post Lord of the Rings, spoke to MTV about the possibility of him returning to Middle Earth in The Hobbit.
“They really want us to come back, and I think there’s a really strong chance that we might be back,” Monaghan revealed to MTV News
“It’s a completely different story,” Monaghan continued. “You don’t have the same characters all the way through it. And I always read ‘The Hobbit’ as being more of a children’s introduction to the story, and then ‘Lord of the Rings’ was kind of the main piece.”
“And you would watch the films,” he said of his plans to prepare to play Merry again. “And try to understand the tonality of what you were trying to play. I was trying to play a boy, like an 11-year-old boy [in the original films], so I would just go back into what it was like to be a boy and have that sense of innocence [again]. So it’s not a huge push to get me back in there.
“I’ve been chatting with Pete and [writers] Fran [Walsh] and Philippa [Boyens] about the chance of us coming back,” he said of the recent activity that fans all over the world will undoubtedly find precious. “I think the fans of the first three ‘Lord of the Rings’ films will be charmed by going back into the world.”
At this point in time The Hobbit seems so far away there is no point getting excited yet. We’ll just have to keep watching the trilogy for a year or so until they actually start filming.
Dominic Monaghan will be seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (I told you he was successful) playing the character of ‘Beak’ (…oh….errrm…) who can manipulate electricity (oh that’s cool. He’s totally successful now).
Mark Strong gives Sherlock Holmes ending details | Filmonichttp://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploa...ark-strong.jpg
A few weeks ago Mark Strong let slip that Cate Blanchett would be playing Maid Marian in Robin Hood, now he’s revealed what the ending of Sherlock Holmes will consist of! Warner Bros. will no doubt be overjoyed.
From Totalfilm: [Contains minor spoilers]
“There’s a fantastic sequence where we duel to the death on a half-built Tower Bridge,” he said. “It’s a perfect way to end the movie, Robert and I hammering seven bells out of each other on top of this swinging bridge with Victorian London as a backdrop. It’s going to be amazing.”
For those not in the know, Strong plays occult-dabbling Satanist Lord Blackwood, who he admits is based on Alastair Crowley.
“There’s a touch of Dracula about him,” he said of the character. “He needed to have an element of showmanship about him by virtue of the fact that he’s trying to persuade everyone around him that he’s so in league with the Devil that he’s able to conquer death. I just wanted to make him an equal adversary of Sherlock Holmes.”
Sounds interesting. With Strong playing the villain in Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass and possibly Robin Hood, he must be trying to avoid being typecast by showing his loving and giving side. Especially with secret information he signed a contract not to tell.
Chris Morgan On Wanted 2 | Filmonichttp://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploa...1/wanted_2.jpg
Wanted writer Chris Morgan recently spoke to MTV about how things were going with Wanted 2, which was greenlight within weeks of the first film being released due to it’s successful money earning abilities.
“Yes, I will be writing it,” confirmed Morgan. “I’m actually leaving this conversation with you to go to a meeting with the director, Timur [Bekmambetov], and we’re talking about the story.”
“As far as I know, the studio is finishing their deal with Mark [Millar], and then we’re all going to get together and collaborate,” said Morgan, a longtime comics fan. “And that’s something I’m very excited about.”
“…the point is to continue the journey that Wes started in the first film. Wherever he ended up at the end of the film, now it’s time to move him forward.”
“There’s a natural journey that Wes needs to take,” continued Morgan, adding that the sequel “is going to be opened up to be more global.”
I’m not sure what they plan to do about the cast. Obviously James McAvoy will return, however Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman and Common may not. If you have seen the film you will know why. I guess the writers will have to work that one out. (Trying to get the biggest female movie star in the world back should be a priority)
