Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright film 'The World's End' gets greenlight, poster

The World’s End, long-awaited cinema reunion of director Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), officially has a greenlight, Universal Pictures announced today. Costarring regular collaborator Nick Frost, and co-written by Wright and Pegg, the film will follow five old friends who attempt to re-create a heroic pub crawl they attempted 20 years previous, which ends at a pub called The World’s End. But as the title implies, the fate of humankind also hangs in the balance.
Universal also released a teaser poster for the film, evoking the pub crawl of the plot. Check it out below:

Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad recently did an interview with THR in which he revealed some information on a few familiar film projects they are working on getting into production.

One of the big surprises he revealed was that the studio is looking to reboot 1995's Jumanji. The original movie was directed by Joe Johnston (Captain America) and starred Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, and Kirsten Dunst.

We're going to try and reimagine Jumanji and update it for the present.
I actually tried to show the orignal movie to my kids recently, and they just weren't into it. This is one of those movies I could care less about, so if they want to remake it, fine. I don't see the point, but it's their money.

He then went on to say that a 21 Jump Street sequel is gearing up to start shooting in the fall,

...we plan to start shooting in the fall. There are very few actors -- I'm going to quote Amy -- who can do romance, action and comedy. We're in business with two of them, Channing Tatum and Will Smith.
I loved 21 Jump Street, and I'm excited to hear that a sequel is happening. This is the best thing I've seen Tatum do, and I wouldn't mind to see the comedic insanity continue.

As for another Men in Black movie, the last one made $615.5 million dollars. So of course, Sony is going to make another one!

We're very pleased with the financial performance of Men in Black 3, and we believe it is an ongoing franchise. We're going to do [another one], but we don't have clarity yet on how it should be done.

CBS have acquired the screen rights to Deus Ex: Human Revolution and will be working closely with the developers, Eidos Montreal, to make a film. Welcome to the terrible mental no man’s land that lies somewhere between “hmm, interesting” and “ohnononono.” Let’s take a look at what the folk involved have to say about the thing and then recklessly judge the endeavour.
“As is clear from the wild success of the game, Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal know how to exceed their audience’s expectations by engineering incredible worlds.” That’s the cracking, distorted voice of CBS co-president of CBS, Terry Press, appearing as a faceless talking head on a glass screen in front of the silhouette of a pacing conspirator. “No one knows ‘Human Revolution’ like the team that created it, and we look forward to working with them from day one to make a film adaptation worthy of the ‘Deus Ex’ name.”
The conspirator stops and turns as faceless shadow NUMBER TWO begins to speak. “As the millions of fans who have played the ‘Deus Ex’ games for more than a decade will tell you, these games catapult you into a universe that is stimulating, engaging and relevant,” Augmented sonic receptors (ears) tell tell us that it’s Phil Rogers, president and CEO of Square Enix Europe. “We’re firm believers in building strong partnerships, and so we’re thrilled to be working with CBS Films on bringing the unique ‘Deus Ex’ experience to the bigscreen,” he says.
The shadowy conspirator picks up a datapad to find a conveniently relevant Variety article on the front page. It suggests that the plot of the film will be similar to that of the game. Instead of a security guard, Jensen’s character will be a SWAT operative, but he’ll still have augmentations, which he’ll have to use to bring down a corrupt and sinister conspiracy. The conspirator nods. Is he pleased? It’s too damn dark to tell.
With a few taps at a console dossiers appear on the flat screen. One man’s name swims out of the flickering golden UI. Adrian Askarieh, producer of the Deus Ex project, previous projects: Hitman.
    The room grows cold.
Another name: Roy Lee. Previous credits: The Ring (US remake), The Grudge (US remake).
The conspirator moves an arm up slowly, and then hits his forehead with an audible slap. A facepalm, or the momentary glitch of a poorly calibrated arm augmentation? The man taps more buttons and three switches light up. Switch A: Press to watch this film. Switch B: Press to pretend this film doesn’t exist. Switch C: Initiate drone attack order on business competitors. Which would YOU choose?

AUTHOR WINS THE MATRIX COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT CASE
This little known story has met a just conclusion, as Sophia Stewart, African American author of The Matrix will finally receive her just due from the copyright infringement of her original work!!!

A six-year dispute has ended involving Sophia Stewart, the Wachowski Brothers, Joel Silver and Warner Brothers. Stewart’s allegations, involving copyright infringement and racketeering, were received and acknowledged by the Central District of California, Judge Margaret Morrow presiding. Stewart, a New Yorker who has resided in Salt Lake City for the past five years, will recover damages from the films, The Matrix I, II and III, as well as The Terminator and its sequels.

She will soon receive one of the biggest payoffs in the history of Hollywood, as the gross receipts of both films and their sequels total over 2.5 billion dollars. Stewart filed her case in 1999, after viewing the Matrix, which she felt had been based on her manuscript, ‘The Third Eye,’ copyrighted in 1981. In the mid-eighties Stewart had submitted her manuscript to an ad placed by the Wachowski Brothers, requesting new sci-fi works..

According to court documentation, an FBI investigation discovered that more than thirty minutes had been edited from the original film, in an attempt to avoid penalties for copyright infringement. The investigation also stated that ‘credible witnesses employed at Warner Brothers came forward, claiming that the executives and lawyers had full knowledge that the work in question did not belong to the Wachowski Brothers.’ These witnesses claimed to have seen Stewart’s original work and that it had been ‘often used during preparation of the motion pictures..’ The defendants tried, on several occasions, to have Stewart’s case dismissed, without success.

Stewart has confronted skepticism on all sides, much of which comes from Matrix fans, who are strangely loyal to the Wachowski Brothers. One on-line forum, entitled Matrix Explained has an entire section devoted to Stewart. Some who have researched her history and writings are open to her story.
Others are suspicious and mocking. ‘It doesn’t bother me,’ said Stewart in a phone interview last week, ‘I always knew what was true.’Some fans, are unaware of the case or they question its legitimacy, due to the fact that it has received little to no media coverage. Though the case was not made public until October of 2003, Stewart has her own explanation, as quoted at aghettotymz.com :

‘The reason you have not seen any of this in the media is because Warner Brothers parent company is AOL-Time Warner…. this GIANT owns 95 percent of the media… let me give you a clue as to what they own in the media business… New York Times papers/magazines, LA Times papers/magazines, People Magazine, CNN news, Extra, Celebrity Justice, Entertainment Tonight, HBO, New Line Cinema, DreamWorks, Newsweek, Village Roadshow and many, many more! They are not going to report on themselves. They have been suppressing my case for years.’ Fans who have taken Stewart’s allegations seriously, have found eerie mythological parallels, which seem significant in a case that revolves around the highly metaphorical and symbolic Matrix series. Sophia, the Greek goddess of wisdom has been referenced many times in speculation about Stewart. In one book about the Goddess Sophia, it reads, ‘The black
goddess is the mistress of web creation spun in her divine matrix.’Although there have been outside implications as to racial injustice (Stewart is African American), she does not feel that this is the case. ’This is all about the Benjamins,’ said Stewart. ‘It’s not about money with me. It’s about justice.’

Umm, according to Snopes this is False and outdated... I thought something sounded strange, especially since they mentioned the Terminator in there too...

    Matrix Lawsuit
Claim: Sophia Stewart won a large judgment in a copyright infringement suit over authorship of the film The Matrix.

    FALSE

'It's not about money with me. It's about justice.'

Origins: The Matrix was an immediate box office hit upon its release in March 1999, quickly grabbing the public's imagination and its movie-going dollars. Together with its two sequels it has grossed in excess of $2.5 billion, making it one of the most lucrative film franchises in cinematic history.

Sophia Stewart, a native New Yorker who lives in Salt Lake City and works as a paralegal, generated controversy by claiming in a lawsuit brought against directors Andy and Larry Wachowski, producer Joel Silver, Warner Bros., and Twentieth Century Fox that The Matrix and Terminator film franchises were based on her ideas. According to Stewart, in 1986 she responded to an advertisement posted by the Wachowski brothers in a national magazine soliciting science fiction manuscripts to make into comic books by sending them "The Third Eye," a short story she had written and copyrighted in 1981. She said never heard back from them nor received her manuscript back, but when she saw The Matrix in 1999 she was struck by how
closely it resembled her story. She filed suit against the makers of the film, seeking over $1 billion in damages. (This page provides links to a number of files and articles about her lawsuit.)

Stewart's case was dismissed in June 2005 when she failed to show up for a preliminary hearing of her case. In a 53-page ruling, Judge Margaret Morrow of the Central District Court of California dismissed the suit, saying Stewart and her attorneys had not entered any evidence to bolster its key claims or demonstrated any striking similarity between her work and the accused directors' films. As of this writing, Stewart's case is no longer before the courts. She has announced that she does not plan to let the matter drop, so possibly this case could someday be re-filed and heard, but for now it is over.

A less than accurate newspaper article about Stewart and her case (quoted in the Example box above) caused many to believe the woman claiming authorship had won her copyright infringement suit and was about to receive a multi-billion dollar settlement. That 28 October 2004 article, penned by a second-year communications student for the Salt Lake Community College Globe, erred in mistaking Stewart's 4 October 2004 successful counter to a dismissal motion for her having prevailed in her suit. The article asserted Stewart "will recover damages from the films, The Matrix I, II and III, as well as The Terminator and its sequels" and would "soon receive one of the biggest payoffs in the history of Hollywood." What Stewart had won was the right to proceed with her case, but nothing more.

The Globe subsequently posted the following correction:
In reference to the recent article entitled "Mother of the Matrix Victorious," some information has been deemed misleading. Ms. Sophia Stewart has not yet won her case against Joel Silver, Time Warner and the Wachowski Bros. The decision on October 4th enabled Ms. Stewart to proceed with her case, as all attempts to have it dismissed were unsuccessful. Ms. Stewart's case will proceed through the Central District Court of California.

    Thanks,
    The Globe Staff
A number of web-based news sites continue to republish outdated (and inaccurate) articles from 2004 claiming that Sophia Stewart has won her case.

Hollywood has been trying to do an Americanized remake of Japan's hit film Battle Royale for years! The movie is basically a much more violent and hardcore version of The Hunger Games, only it was made long before The Hunger Games existed. The film follows a group of teenagers that live in a totalitarian state and have to fight for survival in a government-imposed competition. Producers Neal Moritz (The Fast and the Furious) and Roy Lee (the upcoming Lego movie) have been trying to get it made for about six years.

Now it looks like Battle Royale could end up being a TV series on The CW, which doesn't spark much confidence. A series like this belongs on HBO or Starz. Maybe AMC could pull it off, but not The CW. It makes no sense to me that Battle Royale could end up being developed there. According to the LA Times,

In the last few weeks, the CW has had talks with the project's Hollywood representatives about the possibility of turning the property into an English-language show, said a person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak about it publicly. The talks were preliminary, but if a deal could be reached, the network would acquire rights to Koushun Takami’s underlying novel, then unpack and expand on it for an hourlong dramatic series.
Thankfully, as of right now no deal is in place. The article points out that one main thing that the network will need is the approval of Takami, "which according to Japanese law must be secured before any remake moves forward." So if Takami doesn't like the plan for the series they want to do then he can always turn them down. Fingers crossed.

For those of you wondering why we wont see a Battle Royal film anytime soon, you can blame The Hunger Games. New Line didn't want people thinking it was a copycat film, even though that's exactly what The Hunger Games is. I'd much rather see a big screen remake of this movie than a very, very watered down CW TV adaptation.

Josh Trank has been pulled in more directions than Stretch Armstrong since his directorial debut, Chronicle, was a hit at the box office. He is confirmed for The Fantastic Four reboot. In addition Trank has seen his name attached to Venom and Shadow of the Colossus for Sony, The Red Star for Warner Bros., as well as the Chronicle sequel for Fox.

Chronicle writer Max Landis has pretty much written off the idea of Trank directing a Chronicle sequel, and I think that is highly unlikely as well. Out of the projects listed above, The Red Star already has a tentative release date in 2014. Fantastic Four is said to be moving into production immediately after the sequel to X-Men: First Class wraps. This would give Fantastic Four a start date in mid-late 2013 (barring any major issues).

Fox has a major issue on their hands. David A. Slade recently dropped out of directing duties for the Daredevil reboot. Fox's 7 year deal with Marvel for Daredevil is coming to an end. The studio has been left scrambling to find a director before the property reverts back to Marvel Studios. To avoid that, Fox has to go into production on Daredevil by the fall. The last Fantastic Four movie was released in 2007, so Fox also has to move quickly to get the Fantastic Four into production, or it will also go back to Marvel.

The Red Star is currently being written and was supposed to be Trank's next proeject. When he was confirmed for Fantastic Four, it was also stated that Fox expects it would now be his next directing gig. We do not know any specifics about Trank's deal with Warner Bros. for Red Star. The film already has a tentative release date set for 2014. This means that it would be nearly impossible for Trank to film Fantastic Four. There have been so many production issues for films of late, that I do not believe it will be possible for Trank to direct Fantastic Four.

Marvel sure blew fanboys and fangirls away with phase one of their master plan, ending it with an atomic blast with The Avengers. Phase two has been revealed, and it looks like it's going to be a blast! We've got Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and the currently undated Ant-Man and The Avengers 2.

SFX Magazine recently sat down with Marvel Comics Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada to discuss the next phase of Marvel's cinematic universe, and here's what he had to say...

It’s going to be really interesting to see what happens next. But personally I think that The Avengers now enhances the solo movies because it was so successful. Everyone has their favourite moment or character and now it’s like ’we’ve seen what you’ve got so show us some more.'
Like the first phase, Iron Man will kick off the second phase with the third film in the franchise. Quesada talked up the Shane Black-directed film saying,

It’s going to have some amazing surprises, I don’t think people have any idea what it’s going to be like but it’s a wonderful take on what the third Iron Man movie should be. We have a really unique perspective on it and we’re pretty happy with how it’s shaping up. [Robert Downey Jr.] has really taken the character to some new and interesting places.
As for Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier... Quesada didn't say much.

The goal is to mine different territory to what we have already. We’ve been very lucky and fortunate to [also] have these characters enhanced by the performances of these actors.
He didn't really go into any details on Gaurdians of the Galaxy, but did share some thoughts about the responsibility of bringing their characters to life on the big screen.

There’s a whole library of Marvel characters that could benefit from these treatments. What happens is that when one breaks out and is a success, it makes you think that if that character worked then maybe these two or three others that we never thought about before might also work. But we have to be really judicious about how we do these films because you don’t want to become your own worst enemy by over-saturating and flooding the market with this stuff.
    Quesada concluded,

So much of what we do is part of a big collaborative process at Marvel. So we’re going to stick to our guns and continue doing the things that we want to do in the way that we want to do them. I know that it’s tough as a fan because fans are impatient, they want to see their favourite character up there but at the end of the day the worst thing that we could do is rush a character to the screen and have it fail because then you don’t see them again for decades. That’s why we’re so strategic about this stuff, because we don’t want to hurt any characters or the Marvel brand by rushing out product.

    Just got this in my e-mail;

If You Are a Current or Former Netflix Subscriber
A Class Action Settlement Could Affect You
Our records show that you were a current or former Netflix subscriber as of July 5, 2012. We are emailing to tell you about a Settlement that may affect your legal rights. Please read this email carefully. Go to www.VideoPrivacyClass.com for more information.

A Settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit that claims Netflix unlawfully kept and disclosed information, including records on the movies and TV shows its customers viewed. Netflix denies that it has done anything wrong.

    What does the Settlement provide?

Netflix has agreed to change its data retention practices so that it separates (known as “decoupling”) Entertainment Content Viewing History (that is, movies and TV shows that someone watched) from identification information for those subscribers who have not been a Netflix subscriber for at least 365 days, with some exceptions.

In addition, Netflix will pay $9 million into a Settlement Fund to:
    • Make donations to Court-approved not-for-profit organizations, institutions, or programs.
    • Pay notice and settlement administration expenses.
    • Pay attorneys’ fees of up to 25% or $2.25 million of the Settlement Fund, plus up to $25,000 in expenses.
    • Pay a total incentive award of $30,000 to the Named Plaintiffs.

Proposals from potential donation recipients will be sought, and, after consideration, recommendations will be made to the Court. A list of the proposed donation recipients will be posted on the website.

    Your Options

If you do nothing, you will remain in the Settlement and your rights will be affected. If you do not want to be included, you must exclude yourself by November 14, 2012. If you exclude yourself you will keep your right to sue Netflix about the claims in this lawsuit. If you remain in the Settlement, you can object to it by November 14, 2012.

The Court will hold a hearing on December 5, 2012 to consider any objections, whether to approve the Settlement, award attorneys’ fees, and incentive award. You can appear at the hearing, but you don’t have to. You can hire your own attorney, at your own expense, to appear or speak for you at the hearing.

Universal Pictures plans on making sequels for Seth Macfarlane's Ted, American Pie and Snow White and the Huntsman, despite the fact of the whole Kristen Stewart and director Rupert Sanders affair thing.

Sony Pictures will move forward with sequels to The Amazing Spider-Man, 21 Jump Street and a fourth Men in Black film.

In July Paul Gerrard (Wrath Of The Titans, Battle LA) and Mike Le Han (Mrs Peppercorn’s Magical Reading Room) produced a teaser trailer to accompany the pitch document which has many more conceptual designs that revision Hellraiser. Paul designed the new look for Pinhead and was production designer on the shoot and Le Han pulled in all of his film resources and directed the teaser on the new Alex 4:3 camera with anamorphic lenses.

With a crew of 47 an over 100 bloodied extras, the shoot was completed and is now in the depths of post production with a massive amount of VFX work being undertaken. Method Studios, Fugitive Studios and Flipbook Animation are helming the chi/VFX with the talented Glen Southern designing the new Hellraiser box.

When the teaser is complete they’ll be presenting it to Dimension Films along with an outline of the first film story and conceptual art pitch document with the hope to work on rebooting the Hell raiser franchise and bringing it into the 21st Century.

    Disney trying to strongarm Fox?
The clock is ticking for 20th Century Fox to put its DAREDEVIL reboot into production before character rights revert to Marvel — but Fox chairman Tom Rothman and Marvel brass have been talking about a tradeoff that would allow the comicbook franchise to remain at Fox past its Oct. 10 deadline, report Variety's Jeff Sneider, Rachel Abrams and Marc Graser. One reason for the backroom dealings: Fox is in discussions with Joe Carnahan to direct what’s been described as a “Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller” take on blind Hell’s Kitchen superhero Matt Murdock — a vision that would deviate from Disney/Marvel’s family-friendly tone. Carnahan has yet to receive an official offer, though multiple sources tell Variety that he’s the choice. But Fox also has something Marvel wants: Sources say Marvel would give Fox more time to make DAREDEVIL in return for the rights to use characters from the FANTASTIC FOUR universe, including the giant, world-devouring supervillain Galactus, rumored to play a key role in future Marvel pics. Marvel is also eyeing future use of Silver Surfer, who in the comicbooks brokered a deal to serve as Galactus’ herald in order to save his home planet. (Fox owns rights to the Silver Surfer as part of its deal for FANTASTIC FOUR, which the studio is also rebooting with CHRONICLE helmer Josh Trank.) At this point, the ball is said to be in Fox’s court, with talks expected to resume later this week. But as of right now, Fox needs to start lensing by the Oct. 10 deadline to keep DAREDEVIL in-house. Neither Fox, Marvel nor reps for Carnahan would comment on the dealings.

The 1986 alien sitcom ALF (Alien Life Form) will be coming to the big screen as a CGI animated live-action hybrid. Sony Pictures animation just acquired the rights to the property, and it will be produced by Jordan Kerner, who brought the wonderfully awful big screen adaptation of The Smurfs. Hopefully the ALF movie will be a much better film adaptation.

The story centers on a friendly furry alien creature, who crash lands on Earth and ends up shacking up with a suburban family named the Tanners. Of course he's being tracked down by the government as well. ALF is known for being a very sarcastic individual who loves to eat cats.

The original series creators Tom Patchett and Paul Fusco will also serve as producers on the film. Fusco was also the puppeteer and voice of ALF on the series. As of right now, there is no writer or director attached to the project. The fact that the creators will be involved with the series though, gives me hope that the movie will be a solid representation of the character.

Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, and the rest of the Little Rascals are getting another feature film treatment. Universal Pictures is planning another film, and they've hired Alex Zamm to direct it. Does the world really need another Little Rascals movie? No. But it's happening.

Did any of you like the 1994 Little Rascals big screen adaptation? I thought it was terrible. For those of you not even familiar with this franchise, it's based on a cinematic series called Our Gang, which aired during late 1930s and ‘40s. It was adapted for television in the '50s. I will say if that make this reboot a period piece that takes place in the '30s that might be interesting, but chances are they'll just give it a modern update for audiences like they did in '94.

As for the director, Zamm, there's a reason you've never heard of him, he's made films such as... are you ready? Carrot Top’s 1998 film Chairman of the Board, and the straight-to-DVD sequels Inspector Gadget 2, Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2, and Tooth Fairy 2. Makes me wonder if this new Little Rascals film will be a straight to DVD movie. It's not specified in the report over at Moviehole.

Extended preview for the new show "Revolution;"

    Synopsis;

Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working? Well, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible. And without any modern technology, who can tell us why? Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it? On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. And a young woman’s life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously – and unbeknownst to her – had something to do with the blackout. This brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring coming-of-age journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future.
The show premieres September 17th on NBC.

The last thing we heard on the Daredevil reboot was that A-Team director Joe Carnahan was in talks to direct the film, and that Fox was trying to push it into production before the rights revert back to Marvel in October. October is fast approaching, and it doesn't look like Carnahan is going to be directing it. The director tweeted out the following statements yesterday,

Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.

We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone's side.
Looks like Marvel is most likely going to end up getting the rights to Daredevil back, which is pretty awesome if you ask me! I think every Marvel property should belong to Marvel. I would have loved to see what Carnahan had planned, but in the end it's in better hands at Marvel. A week ago he sent out the following tweet...

DD fans would be very pleased if they saw the things I've seen of late. Very, VERY pleased...
Unless the studio has some sneaky master plan, it sounds like they are just going to let the rights revert back.

Joe Carnahan's attempt to make a 1970's style Daredevil adaptation is dead. Fox is going to let the rights lapse so they will end up back in the hands of Marvel. Hopefully Marvel will hire Carnahan to make the movie for them, because after watching these two Sizzle Reels that shows the directors vision of of the film, I really want to see it get the movie treatment. Carnahan was planning on making a seriously badass Daredevil movie that I think fans would have loved.

The director tweeted out the two sizzle reels to shows us what we're all going to miss out on. These are what he presented to the studio, to show them what could have been. The videos contain footage from other movies and some comic art, but it's the tone, setting and style that sells it.
