The original, traditional, one-hundred-percent, red-blooded, two-fisted, All-American Christmas continues five years later, with Ralphie (Braeden Lemasters), Randy (Valin Shinyei), Mom (Stacey Travis), and the Old Man (Daniel Stern). This time, Ralphie has his eyes fixed on a car. But trouble is sure to follow.

The CW Is Developing a Wonder Woman Origins Series
Boom! Wonder Woman may be coming back to TV after all, but not in the way we've been used to seeing her on film. Barely a year after NBC opted against moving forward with David E. Kelley's reworking of the comic book icon, and just as the character is hooking up with the Man of Steel in the comics, Vulture hears that the CW, Warner Bros. TV, and DC Comics have found a new way to revive the legend of Diana of Themyscira. The plan this time: origin story, all the way.

Our sources say the new take on the comic book crime fighter is being written by Allan Heinberg (Grey's Anatomy, The O.C.) under the working title Amazon. Unlike past TV incarnations, it will focus on Wonder Woman as a young, budding superhero, rather than a fully formed defender of liberty. (Think Smallville, but instead of a "no tights, no flights" rule, this show might have a "no bracelets, no crown" mandate.) Heinberg seems a logical candidate for the job: His resume includes work on the kinds of soapy dramas the CW favors as well as comic-geek street cred (he wrote the Young Avengers comic book series back in 2005).

It should be noted that CW is only developing a script at this point; no pilot production has been greenlit or even contractually guaranteed. (The network, along with WBTV and D.C., declined comment) But if a pilot is filmed, and a show gets ordered, it will be a major accomplishment for WBTV and D.C., since rebooting WW (outside of animation) has proven challenging in the three decades since the campy Wonder Woman TV series wrapped its three-year run on ABC and CBS in 1979. Most recently, there was the aforementioned Kelley take. It was pitched to various networks in the fall of 2010, apparently rejected by broadcasters, but then picked up by NBC in early 2011. After Kelley turned in his pilot, however, the Peacock made the decision to not move forward with a series. Likewise, Joss Whedon had long been attached to a film take on Wonder Woman. That never came to fruition, either, and Whedon is now busy with another comic franchise these days.

But Warners (which owns D.C.) seems determined. This past June, Variety reported, almost as an afterthought, that writer Michael Goldenberg was developing a new feature film centered around the Wonder Woman character. No details of that project have emerged and it's unclear if D.C. would proceed with a film revival if Amazon moved forward. (It's worth noting that Warners launched Superman Returns in theaters even as the origins-centric WB series Smallville continued on TV). If Amazon ultimately takes off, however, CW does seem the right environment for bringing back Wonder Woman: The network has a long history of successful sci-fi/superhero shows (it aired the last few seasons of WB import Smallville; Arrow launches this season) and its female-centric lineup seems a natural home for one of pop culture's leading feminist icons. As long as there's not a campy World War II subplot or any mention of Wonder Woman dolls, we're interested to see what develops.

We've heard over the past few months that we would most likely see sequels to Seth MacFarlane's Ted and Jeremy Renner's Bourne Legacy. Today those sequels have been confirmed by NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke, who said that Universal Pictures will be focusing more on film franchises and an increase in animated movie output over time to strengthen its film business.

According to THR, Burke explained that "franchises and animation" will ensure more stable financials. He then mentioned that some franchises we can count on seeing are more Bourne films, and also said his team wants to make a Ted 2 as soon as they can. Then there's the Fast and the Furious franchise that has already been confirmed.

As far as animation goes, the studio plans to release one every 18 months or so. Their goal is to eventually release two animated feature films a year.

About a year ago Entourage ended its eight season run on HBO. Before it even ended there was talk of continuing story of the characters on the big screen, and creator Doug Ellin has been hard at work pushing it forward to make it happen. There's been no solid time table of when the movie would happen, but according to Deadline, Ellin is 110 pages into the script and plans on finishing it by Sunday!

Apparently, everyone is incredibly excited about getting the movie made, and the show's producer, Mark Whalberg, has been pushing Ellin to get the script finished. According to Ellin, Wahlberg keeps promising “to kill me if I don’t write faster. Every time I see him, Mark says, ‘I’ve made 5 movies this year. Get going!”

He goes on to talk about the movie he's written, revealing that it takes place 6 months after the TV series ends, which sees agent Ari Gold as a newly minted studio mogul. He goes on to say,

There are interesting developments about Ari as a studio head, and that’s still the first page for me. But foremost is the friendship between the guys who are still hanging out and going to fun parties, and it continues with the same characters.
The movie has yet to get the official greenlight, as the studio is waiting for Ellin to turn in the script so they can read it! But chances are this movie is eventually going to happen.

As you know Joss Whedon is not only directing a sequel to The Avengers, but he's also developing a new Marvel live-action TV series based around S.H.I.E.L.D. In a recent interview with MTV, the director discusses the show, revealing that he's already very far into the development process complete "with a full framework and a full cast."

He goes on to say that the characters in the series will all be completely new, which is what I think most of us expected. I didn't think we'd see Nick Fury or Maria Hill running around. He goes on to explain,

It's new characters. It needs to be its own thing. It needs to be adjacent [to the MCU] but you don't want to do a show where you're constantly going, 'Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.' You want them to do their own thing.

Well, what does S.H.I.E.L.D. have that the other superheroes don't? And that, to me, is that they're not superheroes. But they live in that universe. Even though they're a big organization, that [lack of powers] makes them underdogs, and that's interesting to me.

After trying to get an adaptation of the graphic novel Y: The Last Man off the ground for almost a decade, New Line Cinema has now put it on their priority list of films to make. According to Vulture the studio is very happy with the current draft of the script that was written by former Jericho writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia. The studio has now started the process of trying to find a director, and they are currently meeting with candidates to hire.

The comic was created by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, and the story focuses on a character named Yorick, an escape artist, who becomes the last man on Earth when a plague wipes out all of the males on the planet except Yorick and his pet monkey, Ampersand. He treks across the world in search of his girlfriend Beth, to whom he was proposing on the phone when the plague/event/mystery cause struck.

The movie has gone through several directors already such as D.J. Caruso and Louis Leterrier. It will be interesting to see who they bring on to direct the film next.

FX is closing in on a hefty deal to develop a TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro‘s vampire novel trilogy “The Strain,” with Carlton Cuse (A&E’s drama series “Bates Motel”) on board as showrunner, reports Variety.

FX is in final negotiations to order a pilot with the understanding that the project would likely be fast-tracked to a series order. Del Toro will co-write the pilot with Chuck Hogan, his co-author on the HarperCollins books, and he will direct. The plan is to begin lensing in Toronto in the fall of next year.

Project marks a leap of faith for FX which has never before ordered a pilot on the strength of a pitch. Cinemax and Starz were also aggressive contenders for the project.

Del Toro envisions “Strain” as an event series that would have a clearly defined end date. The project is favorite of del Toro’s, who spent years developing his own unique spin on vampire mythology for the books. The first of the series bowed in 2009.

“These are very scary vampires,” Cuse told Variety. “These are not romantic vampires. They will give you nightmares.“

In recent years, whenever there was some ridiculous movie development story for a non-narrative toy like View-Master or Candyland, a popular joking remark by online commenters involved the toy game Hungry Hungry Hippos. Well, laugh on, fanboys, because Hasbro is going for it. After many of their efforts (except Battleship and the upcoming Ouija) at Universal Pictures were eventually shelved, the toy company has locked up a new deal with the Emmet/Furla production company, best known for star-driven action/thriller movies like Rambo, the upcoming Schwarzenegger/Stallone project The Tomb, and the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man (yes, that one). The deal covers three game/toy properties, the first of which to be filmed will be based on the board game Monopoly. Hasbro has been trying to get the Monopoly movie going for years now, including a time when Ridley Scott (who will now just produce) was going to be the director. The second is a toy, not a game, and it's called Action Man. Action Man isn't that well known in the USA, because we have G.I. Joe, which Action Man was basically a British clone of, back in the 1960s. And then, finally, there's the toy game Hungry Hungry Hippos, where players try to make their little plastic hippos swallow marbles. Hungry Hungry Hippos will be an animated children's movie, but even so, that still doesn't explain why anyone thinks an 80+ minute feature film can be built up around a non-narrative toy from back in 1978. As for the snark, movie fans will just have to come up with a new joke. Say, there hasn't been a Fruit of the Looms movie announced yet...

Marvel Animation Studios announced that they are developing a new animated film called Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes Untied, and they've also revealed three stills giving us our first look at what we can expect to see in it. The story will follow the two heroes as they battle the living energy villain Zzzzax, who can absorb human minds. According to Jeph Loeb,

We see his origin in the movie. It’s what would happen if the entire Eastern seaboard [electrical grid] went out. The two heroes meet up, thinking of each other as to blame.
The movie isn't officially connected to The Avengers movie, but Loeb goes on to say that, "We welcome people to interpret any way they like. In tone and character, we want to follow our best leader."

Even though Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo won't be voicing the characters, the movie "will try to capture the spirit of their onscreen partnership in The Avengers. The challenge was to pick up the banter between the two of them. Certainly, Adrian Pasdar’s performance is inspired by what Robert Downey Jr. does, and Mark laid down such an incredible path for us to be able to follow." Adrian Pasdar (Heroes) will voice Iron Man and Fred Tatasciore (Ultimate Spider-Man) voices Bruce Banner/Hulk, and Zzzax will be voiced by Dee Bradley Baker (American Dad).

The movie is a mix of CG and traditional animation, and is set to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 23rd, 2013. We can also expect to see more animated films coming out of Marvel from here on out. Loeb reveals that,

It’s our hope that we will start doing more feature-length direct to Blu-ray and DVD stories. They’ll more than likely be in team-up situations. We find it works really well when we have big exciting adventures with two or more of our heroes.

Electronic Arts‘ hit video game Battlefield: Bad Company is headed to the small screen. Fox has put in development Bad Company, an hourlong action comedy based on EA’s bestselling video game from Alias alum John Eisendrath, Sony TV and studio-based Happy Madison.

Written by Eisendrath, Bad Company features the main characters from the game. It follows four renegade soldiers as they exit military life and enter the private sector. But trouble is never far behind as they realize their commanding officer had used them to further the ends of a shadow unit within the government and now wants them dead to cover his tracks. Eisendrath is executive producing with Happy Madison’s Doug Robinson and EA’s Patrick Bach and Patrick O’Brien.

Part of EA’s Battlefield series, Battlefield: Bad Company, a single-player campaign that drops gamers behind enemy lines, was released in 2008 and spawned a sequel two years later. It received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised the story’s humor as well as the game’s technical aspects.

It sounds like Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds could be connected to each other and might end up being two-thirds of a trilogy. Here's what the director had to say in a recent interview with Total Film,

Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained bespeak a trilogy. As different as they are, there is a companion piece quality. There might very well be a third one. I just don’t know what it is yet.
For those of you who enjoy watching Tarantino's films you know he likes to have fun connecting things when he finds an opportunity. You can read about how his Inglourious Basterds movie fits in with some of his other films in a previous article we posted here.

I do love how Tarantino is changing history in his movies, and there's a strong possibility that his third film in the trilogy could be a 1930's gangster film that he's talked about doing in the past. It seems like it would fit the last couple of period films that he's made recently.

Nothing is set in stone, as he just calls it a possibility, but it's something I could see him actually following through with. Makes me wonder if he plans on casting Christoph Waltz again to play a role in whatever film he comes up with to conclude this trilogy he mentioned.

Because every interview with Stan Lee reconfirms this

We already know Marvel plans on making a Doctor Strange and Black Panther films, scripts have been written, and it's just a matter of time before it happens. But for those of you who need a little more confirmation that these movies are coming, Stan Lee is here to give you peace of mind. In a recent interview with District the comic legend had this to say,

Oh they are all being made into movies! I can tell you there will definitely be a Dr. Strange movie! They are working on Antman, which requires really small cameras! Black Panther is being developed, one of my favorites…the Inhumans…All the hero’s will eventually be made into movies."
All the superheroes will get movies! Damn, he does realize there's over 5,000 of them. But I imagine he means the main heroes that most of us know, and maybe even a few that we don't.

So have you ever wondered what exactly Lee does as an executive producer at Marvel? He doesn't do much, he just enjoys collecting the paycheck. Here's what he had to say when asked about his duties...

None whatsoever, I have very little control. I don’t see the script, occasionally I will have lunch with the director or a star, like the guy making Antman, I don’t remember his name- I don’t remember names, or Robert Downey Jr., for Ironman and we talk about the characters. But all I do for the movies are the cameos really. Then when the movie comes out I am excited to see it just like all of you. I’m seeing it for the first time.

Asteroids is one of the many video games getting the big screen treatment. Assassins Creed, Splinter Cell and Gears of War are all in pre-production. Variety reports that Jez Butterworth is set to rewrite the script for Asteroids for Universal Pictures and Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Not much is currently known about this adaptation, but the material is based on the classic Atari arcade videogame. Matt Lopez and Evan Spiliotopoulos penned earlier drafts of the script. Butterworth has a number of projects in the works currently, including the James Brown biopic.
