Bioshock Canceled

Once upon a time, there was a BioShock movie in production at Universal Studios. However, after much floating about in Limbo, the project is officially dead in the water, and you can mainly thank Irrational Games creative director and co-founder Ken Levine for it.

“There was a deal in place, and it was in production at Universal – Gore Verbinski was directing it,” Levine said in an interview with EuroGamer.

My theory is that Gore wanted to make a hard R film – which is like a 17/18 plus, where you can have blood and naked girls. Well, I don’t think he wanted naked girls. But he wanted a lot of blood.

Then Watchmen came out, and it didn’t do well for whatever reason. The studio then got cold feet about making an R rated $200 million film, and they said what if it was an $80 million film – and Gore didn’t want to make an $80 million film.

They brought another director in, and I didn’t really see the match there – and 2K’s one of these companies that puts a lot of creative trust in people. So they said if you want to kill it, kill it. And I killed it.

While some will be relieved and some will be outraged, it’s important to remember that Levine didn’t start out writing for video games – he started in Hollywood as a professional screenwriter. It wasn’t until a few years later that he went on to make System Shock 2 and BioShock, two colossal hits for the games industry.

It was weird, as having been a screenwriter, begging to do anything, and then killing a movie on something you’d worked on so much.

It was saying I don’t need to compromise – how many times in life do you not need to compromise? It comes along so rarely, but I had the world, the world existed and I didn’t want to see it done in a way that I didn’t think was right. It may happen one day, who knows, but it’d have to be the right combination of people.

No More Nicolas Cage Ghost Riders

For those of you who have been hoping to never see another Ghost Rider movie starring Nicolas Cage, today is your lucky day because he's done with it! I enjoyed Mark Neveldine and Bryan Taylor's Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance more than most people. Regardless of how stupid it was, I liked the over-the-top ridiculousness, and I was entertained. Here's what Cage had to say,

I think the ship has sailed on that one. At least with me involved.... Personally, I'm done, I've done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I'm done.

24 Movie in Limbo

I've been anxiously awaiting the 24 movie that was being developed over at Fox. At one point things seemed to be rolling forward! Kiefer Sutherland wanted to do it, a script was written, and Antoine Fuqua was attached to direct the first movie of a planned trilogy. According to Fuqua, the project all fell apart and it's not going to happen anymore. The director talked to The Playlist in a recent interview, and when asked about it he says...

Yeah, that’s not happening. I don’t think it’s gonna happen at all, definitely not with me. I met with Kiefer [Sutherland], Fox wanted to do it, it was a matter of his schedule before he went off to do his new show [’Touch‘]. I don’t think he was able to get a proper agreement with Fox. The time just passed, and I went off to go to what I was doing.

There were rumors that there were some budgetary issues, and that Sutherland was only offered a meagre $1 million to make the movie.

As we reported earlier, King is also working on his own Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep, and as Room 237 suggests, Stanley Kubrick probably tried to warn us about all of this with that symbolic shot of the single phrase, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” repeated over and over again in slightly different ways.

Relaunches are all the rage in comic books nowadays, but bringing back a superhero TV series that nobody really cared about by the time it ended seems like a hard sell, especially when it’s spearheading a new programming initiative for a video game console. As part of a push to bring original content to the Xbox, MSN is in talks to dig up the corpse of NBC’s Heroes and bring it back to life, presumably via Lazarus Pit, Infinity Formula, or some other fantastic comic book creation that keeps things from dying. The revived show would feature a fresh cast of heroes along with cameos from former cast members, setting up a new storyline to go drastically off the rails by its second season (if it gets that far). If anything, the new Heroes seems like the perfect place for The Cape to continue his tragically short superhero career.

Daredevil rights officially back to Marvel

We had assumed as much anyway after Fox failed to meet the deadline to get a new Daredevil movie going and lost out on the rights to the character, but we had never heard anything official from either studio on the matter until now. Speaking with Newsarama yesterday at the Iron Man 3 press junket, Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige confirmed to the site that the Daredevil rights are indeed now under the Disney/Marvel umbrella. Although that seems to be all he had to say on the matter as Newsarama report: "While Feige told us about the rights reversion, he gave no indication of what, if anything, Marvel Studios has planned for Daredevil at this point." Good news, but I think it'll be a while before we see the character on the big screen again. If anything I think a Marvel tv series is more likely. What about you guys?
