EXCLUSIVE: Though it recently looked like the Beverly Hills Cop saga would continue on television, Paramount Pictures has begun moving fast on another movie. The studio has enlisted Eddie Murphy to reprise his role as Axel Foley, and they’ve set Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec to write that script. That duo has done very well at the studio, with recent script credits that include Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remake.


The series began in 1984, tailor made for Murphy as the tough talking Detroit cop who was an outsider and excoriated by authority, but who was the smartest cop on the block. Martin Brest directed the first one, Tony Scott helmed the second, and the last one was directed by John Landis in 1994, back when Murphy was one of the studio’s biggest stars. The series grossed near $750 million collectively. Paramount adds that to another retro project that originated in the ’80s, a sequel to 1986′s Top Gun, which has been in limbo since the film’s director, Scott, committed suicide. Tom Cruise was ready to star at that point.

We hear the newest installment in the film franchise was fueled by the interest sparked by the Beverly Hills Cop pilot this past season. The project, written by Shawn Ryan and executive produced by Murphy and Ryan, ignited a bidding war before landing at CBS last fall where it went to a pilot starring Brandon T. Jackson as Axel’s son. Murphy reprised his role in a scene-stealing turn that had people talking. It showed that the character and Murphy’s portrayal are still pretty potent. The pilot was produced by Sony Pictures TV, with Paramount, as rights holder, coming on board after the pilot green light for what the company billed as its re-entry into television. (Paramount is restarting a TV production operation.) For whatever reason, Paramount-CBS politics or pilot testing depending who you ask, the project shockingly did not go to series. But it drew enough attention to the franchise to spawn a new movie.

Sega announces a new Sonic cartoon, Sonic Boom

Sonic the Hedgehog, the iconic video game character who has brought his trademark speed and attitude to four TV series and more than 70 video games, is returning to television in his first-ever CG animated series in the fall 2014. The action packed comedy series aimed at children 6-11 will debut first on Cartoon Network in the U.S. and on CANAL J and GULLI in France, with a global rollout to follow. The initial order of 52 eleven-minute episodes is co-produced by SEGA of America Inc. and Genao Productions.

Sonic Boom is a character-driven comedy that leaves a trail of robot wreckage in its smoldering wake. The series centers on Sonic, his best friend and sidekick, Tails, their never-ending search for adventure, and their battles with Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman. Rounding out the ensemble are fan favorites Knuckles and Amy Rose, plus a rogue’s gallery of enemies—some familiar to Sonic fans and some brand-new.

Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Meir, and Jane McGregor, Executive Producers for SEGA, packaged the series, bringing together SEGA, Cartoon Network, and Genao Productions. Sandrine Nguyen and Boris Hertzog, Executive Producers for Genao, assembled a world-class lineup of partners in France, including broadcasters GULLI and CANAL J, Lagardere Entertainment Rights and Lagardère Active TV Licensing & New Business. Baily, Meir and Nguyen developed the series, and Hertzog and McGregor structured the financing and negotiated all the deals. Baily (formerly EVP of Production and Creative Affairs for Classic Media) and Co-Executive Producer Bill Freiberger (The Simpsons, Drawn Together) are showrunners. Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team and driving creative force behind the Sonic games, is overseeing the series to ensure that it’s true to the Sonic characters and universe.

“Sonic is the star of the SEGA universe and the stage is now set for him to shine like never before. By teaming up with world-class partners in television animation like Cartoon Network, Genao Productions and GULLI, we’re ensuring that the Sonic legacy will be introduced to a new generation of children across the globe,” said Hiroyuki Miyazaki, SEGA’s Chief Content Officer for Sonic.

“We wanted to strengthen our TV channels’ editorial content with strong brands. This is our new objective. Sonic is an enormously popular and unique character with all the qualities of an animation series’ great hero—humor, bravery, loyalty, inventiveness. We are extremely proud to welcome him across our kids and family channels at Lagardère Active and will activate across these channels to raise awareness and excitement for the new series,” said Caroline Cochaux, Head of Programs, Kids & Family Channels, Lagardère Active.

SEGA is actively seeking partners in support of the new series launch across a range of industries including broadcast and licensing. In terms of television and digital distribution, Lagardere Entertainment Rights holds worldwide rights excluding the U.S. and Asia (but including Japan); SEGA Corporation will manage Asia (excluding Japan); Baily, Meir and McGregor will manage the US through McGregor’s company Jane McGregor, Inc. Licensing support will be spearheaded by Lagardère Active TV Licensing & New Business in France and SEGA in all other territories.

Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared as a videogame character in June 1991 and instantly became an icon for a generation of gamers. Defined by his super-fast speed and cool attitude, in the years since he first raced on to videogame consoles Sonic has become a true global phenomenon with over 140 million videogames sold or downloaded worldwide across consoles, PC’s, mobile phones and tablets. SEGA’s iconic blue blur has also gone on to enjoy incredible success in many licensed areas, such as toys, apparel, comics and animation. This year SEGA announced an exciting three title exclusive partnership with Nintendo for the Sonic the Hedgehog videogame franchise. The Mandarin short film coming soon

Sir Ben Kingsley played a very different version of The Mandarin in Iron Man 3 than fans were expecting. Some of the fans loved it, others hated it. I personally thought it was a daring and great move. No one saw it coming. Now it looks like there's a chance that we'll see the Mandarin back in another Marvel project. Perhaps one of their One Shot short films? In a recent interview with Belfast Telegraph, the actor said,

It’s a secret Marvel project. I’m not allowed to say any more, you’re going to have to wait and see… I was with many members of the crew that were involved in Iron Man 3. It was lovely to see them again. It was great to be with this wonderful family… I think they have enormous taste as creative artists. There’s nothing lazy or gratuitous about their work. They are at the top of their game, and they’re great company to keep.

If the project is a One Shot short film then it will most likely appear on the DVD/Blu-ray release of Thor: The Dark World. But then, of course, there's the possibility that he will show up in one of the other films, and if that's the case it would either be Thor: The Dark World, or Captain America: The Winter Soldier because they have been shot already. I know Guardians of the Galaxy is done shooting as well, but I don't see how the Mandarin would fit into that world, unless they have him playing a completely different character which I doubt.

Marvel has Daredevil & Punisher films in the planning stages

As most of you already know, Marvel Studios has regained the rights for Daredevil and The Punisher. There hasn't been a lot of talk on what plans they have for the properties, but according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, they are trying to figure out what they want to do with them. During an interview with Bleeding Cool, he was asked about the two properties, and this was his response,

We’re trying to figure out what to do with Daredevil now, Punisher could show up at one point. You know, once we get characters back into the Marvel fold we don’t want to do something right away, we want to do the smart thing at the smart time.

These are both awesome characters, and it will be so cool to see what Marvel does with them. Somewhere down the line we will see them return to the big screen, but don't expect it to happen anytime soon. Marvel has their timetable, and they'll introduce them into their cinematic universe when they're good and ready.

If the new Marvel Netflix line-up becomes popular, expect movies, also, new Marvel show being developed for ABC

Yesterday Marvel announced that starting in 2015 we would see TV series for their Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, all of which would lead to a miniseries event for The Defenders. According to Jay Rasulo, Senior Executive VP and CFO of the The Walt Disney Company, these characters may not be limited to Netflix, and the small screen.

Marvel has thousands of characters…and it is not possible to mine them all with filmed entertainment. While these characters are attractive characters they are not among the most popular… it’s not likely we would have made feature films about them…though if they are popular on Netflix, they could become feature films.

It's interesting to see that the studio is using Netflix and these series as a way to test out the popularity of the characters, and see if they could work for the big screen. Disney's CEO Bob Iger added that they are also developing another Marvel TV series saying,

We actually talked about making these series available to others. And there was quite a bit of interest for these properties in the marketplace. The answer is yes, we will as a company, create more original programming for platforms that are not ours. We have some great networks with ABC, ABC Family, The Disney Channel, not to mention ESPN and Life but they’re not going to buy original, scripted programming for a while. But we can sell just so much programming from Marvel, we’ve got a good show in S.H.I.E.L.D. and another one being developed for ABC- more plans on our Disney channel with Marvel, but this seemed to be a great opportunity and I think there will be other opportunities on other platforms to do some more things.

It also seems like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to be around for awhile. Marvel is going to have six series going by 2015, and hopefully one of them is for the Hulk.

Terrence Howard now blames Robert Downey Jr for not being cast in Iron Man 2

Terrence Howard is a great actor, and he has seen much success in his career. However, he just can’t seem to get over the fact that he was not able to continue his role as James “Rhodey” Rhodes in the Marvel movie Universe. Granted, I don’t know what the details are that surrounded his ousting, but if anything he says is true, then he was royally screwed. During an interview in 2008 he said this:

Apparently, the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they are printed on. And promises aren’t kept. Good faith and negotiations aren’t always held up.

He went on to vent about it every chance he got. Well, apparently there is some steam left in that kettle. On a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live, Howard turned his blame flames onto Robert Downey Jr., saying:

It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out.

We did a three-picture deal. That means you did the deal ahead of time — a certain amount for the first one, a certain amount for the second, a certain amount for the third. They came to me with the second and said 'look, we will pay you one-eighth of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.' And I called my friend, that I helped get the first job, and he didn't call me back for three months.

Alex Tse (Watchmen) will be writing the screenplay for the Gran Turismo film

Watchmen screenwriter Alex Tse has been hired by Sony Pictures to write the script for their feature film adaptation of the video game franchise Gran Turismo.

With Need For Speed coming out soon, and a Hot Wheels movie, and Fast and Furious 7 in production, it was only a matter of time before Gran Turismo started making its way to the big screen. I've enjoyed playing Gran Turismo over the years, and it will be interesting to see what kind of story then come up with.

As of right now there is no information on what Tse’s take on a potential plot will be. We do know that it will revolve around some very slick-looking fast cars racing each other though.

Tse not only worked on Watchmen, but he also worked on the remake of The Crow and the live action adaptation of the anime Ninja Scroll. He's currently writing the remake of Highlander for Summit Entertainment.

Michael De Luca, Kevin Spacey, and Dana Brunetti, who recently teamed for Captain Phillips, are producing the project.

Naked Gun Reboot

Detective Frank Drebin is coming back with Ed Helms on board to portray Leslie Nielsen’s character in Paramount’s reboot of “The Naked Gun” comedy franchise.

The studio has tapped the scripting team of Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant — best known for the “Night at the Museum” and “Reno 911″ franchises, to write the screenplay as a new spin on the Drebin character.

Is it official that they now will redo anything?
