he can make art all he likes, as a hobby. why is it when he starts to sell it he no longer has to do what anyone else selling something has to, market it. what is radiohead without fans? the same thing as any other garage band. the only reason he can make his art as his living is his fans buy his shit, so to snub someones dream who is allowing you to live your dream is shooting yourself in the foot.

sure 1 person may not change things drastically but if you continually do it then you will lose fans. every fan they lose is money down the drain,

every job has its pros and cons, if everyone started to ignore and not do the things about their jobs they hated then nothing would get done right. radiohead seems in this instance to have just as much of an inflated sense of entitlement as miley, except miley is acting like a typical teenage girl.

Because typical teenage girls go on the radio & say they will ruin a band for not meeting them, amirite?

they have temper tantrums and make grandiose claims in which they cannot back up yea. if any teenage girl had access to the radio they most certainly would say things of that nature

No but they do go overboard emotionally when shit happens to them. The main reactions one would expect from a teenager would be to either have them start crying or get angry or both. If they're a tad mature they might understand that they aren't the center of the universe but do you really expect that personality trait to develop at that age when you have a multi-million dollar corporation kissing your ass and telling you you're awesome?
I don't know how good she actually is as a musician but given her reaction to this she probably believes the hype that disney has given her and with "millions" of fans to support that belief she thinks she at least has some skill. So now you've got a teenager getting a chance to meet her idol after years(?) of work just trying to be half as awesome as they are and be able to breath so much as the same air and what does she get? GTFO BITCH LOL!.
Yeah. an overly emotional and immature reaction wouldnt be unexpected.

Yeah, vowing revenge/destruction on people that ignore them is very typical of your average teenage girl.

Does the Carrie movie mean anything to you?
Vowing revenge/destruction.? yes overboard. Getting angry and wishing you could hurt a person back if they hurt you in some way? Pretty normal. She simply was delusional enough to think she could actually manage something that would work(while obviously not thinking things through). Her vowing revenge really just means her parents(or Disney) needs to impart some discipline on her and stop her from getting her way all the time.

Fuck. maybe she was on her period for all we know. Or are celebrities not allowed to have PMS?

This of course doesnt mean she isnt a spoiled brat. It really just means this is one of those times where the BS she does is kinda normal.

And well... There are plenty of rich actors in Hollywood who would vow stupid shit like the destruction of thier enemies and they're full grown adults. welcome to the cult of celebrity. Where your ego is inflated to dangerous levels without you realizing it and the paparazzi drive you batshit insane. Let's see how great your mental health is when you need a platoon of bodyguard to set foot outside your house without being trampled to death.

See? what did i tell ya? If mickey hadn't been slumbering in Valhalla he could have been raising her properly and teaching her self control/work ethic. And given a heritage with a voice like mickey's I'm impressed any attempt to sing doesn't sound like a rusty nail on a chalkboard.

imo, who cares if she's hannah montana, the president's daughter, a terminal child, a princess, a poor teenage girl from harlem, a normal american teenager. regardless if you like someone, if you're a nice person just bite your tongue for a couple seconds and say hi. people who are that pomp and rude really don't deserve fame. dude seems like a prick

So because someone is uncomfortable with having fuck tons of attention they should quit their dream? There is setbacks to everything, always. Doing something that you love to do, and making money off it is a dream. I don't know anything about miley cyrus, but she obviously has the mindset that she is so famous that she can do whatever she wants.

Thom doesn't like the attention. Someone who thinks like that obviously doesn't put themselves above everyone else; so why would they do that for a fan that happens to be famous? The fact that people are even arguing that it was wrong to do something like this is fucking retarded. Oh god you didn't meet a crazed fan for 30 seconds, you are a horrible person. Get the fuck out.

I'm sure that he somewhat appreciates the fans that he has, but that isn't the reason albums are put out.

the very reasons his albums are put out are his fans. if they didnt buy them and goto his shows then no label would give him money and he wouldnt be living his dream of making music for a living.

he needs his fans to make that music for his sole source of income. by doing so there are a list of things he is expected to do, being in the public eye and meeting your fans even when you dont want to is up there with actually writing and performing the material.

if you dont do the fundamental parts of your job as a professional whatever then how can you expect people to pay for it and support you in continuing your dream.

the mentality that "oh we dont do that" is absurd. Thats like an actor telling the director he doesnt memorize lines, or you refusing to do anything thats integral to your position.

yeah, the rest of you aren't taking this seriously enough. Capitalism will fail if he continues to act like this.

P.S. your analogy is god awful

how is it awful? obliging fans is a integral part of your job as someone who makes a living as a musician. just as memorizing lines is an integral part of being an actor. i think people are playing down exactly how much a professional artist has to sell themselves as well as their art to much.

I'm not even going to read the rest of your post.

The reason his albums are put out is because his music is good.

seriously? if you think fans arent what makes or breaks a band then you are sadly mistaken. something being good is subjective. bands are made popular because they are picked up by major labels based on their fans (potential selling power).

the records they record are 1 part of a bands publicity to appeal to people. touring is where bands make their money, and if you have no fans and go on a tour you make no money. if you sell no records because you have no fans then you dont get a contract renewal. fans are the reason these bands are placed on that pedestal where they can pursue music or art as their sole profession.

No "artistic" endeavor is EVER undertaken to please you, or miley cyrus. Your analogy would be apt only if he had refused to sing at an event or recording session he was contractually obligated to. Also, has it completely escaped you that by snubbing them he has gotten far more publicity than obliging them could ever possibly garnered. But hey, its not like publicity has ever helped an artist and in turn their label...

and so by your own admission they're hurting no one other than themselves, which is entirely their right.

Didn't Radiohead release their last album for free over the internet? Yeah, something about that makes me think they don't really fear not having a record label. At some point in your career as a famous musician you'll have amassed enough money where you can do shit like fund your own album, and it will sell or be downloaded because you're already so famous that marketing is not needed.

If anything, this situation probably caused the majority of his fans to laugh with glee, as everyone but the "tweens" hate Miley Cryus.

Yes, their last album was released online and fans were allowed to pay whatever they decided to.

it's interesting trying to pass off an opinion as fact lol.

...and the whole "part of the job" analogy is correct, but who cares if it's a job, it's called being a nice person. who cares if she's a fan or an enemy or doesn't know who they are. who cares if you're a musician or a firefighter or a mcdonalds employee, who do you think you are to just say "i don't do that". if he has some inane social phobia that prevents him from talking to people he doesn't know, maybe he should issue a statement saying it was nothing personal, but nope he didn't do that.
