Michael Steele supports "individual choice" for abortion...kinda.

Washington Times - Abortion a 'choice,' Steele tells GQ

In an exchange with reporter Lisa de Paulo, transcribed and posted Wednesday night on the GQ Web site, the new Republican National Committee chairman described his background as an adopted child as showing him "the power of life ... and the power of choice."

"The choice issue cuts two ways. You can choose life, or you can choose abortion. You know, my mother chose life. So, you know, I think the power of the argument of choice boils down to stating a case for one or the other," Mr. Steele said.

The exchange then went as follows, starting with GQ: "Are you saying you think women have the right to choose abortion?" "Yeah. I mean, again, I think that's an individual choice." "You do?" "Yeah. Absolutely."

Mr. Steele then elaborated that he thought "Roe v. Wade — as a legal matter, Roe v. Wade was a wrongly decided matter," which prompted Miss DePaulo to ask: "But if you overturn Roe v. Wade, how do women have the choice you just said they should have?"

Mr. Steele responded. "The states should make that choice. That's what the choice is. The individual choice rests in the states. Let them decide."
Didn't see this posted anywhere and search failed me. This shit is hilarious, Steele is a double-talking idiot. This by far is way more socialistic and fascist then anything Obama has ever said.

Its funny when he has to answer questions on his own. Before he was just parroting the garbage he was being feed, like he did whenever he was on Bill Mahar. Now its seems he isnt being feed the message, and he looks retarded.

Contradiction between letting the states decide, and wanting the national government to decide for the states. This issue also mirrors the right to marriage issue where some people want individual states to decide who can marry, but some conservatives do not want states to be forced to acknowledge the marriages from other states, nor even stomach the idea of some states dissenting.

I think it's the conservative movement biting its own tail, what between being authoritarian AND at the same time arguing for the more democratic powers of the states.

The rabid fundamentalism and the smaller federal government ideals are starting to separate like oil and water.

    And I love it.

Classical Conservatism is so much more workable than this horseshit we've been eating for the last few years.

I'll just say this.. Steele deserves some credit for coming out with a risky position against part of his own party's platform. He did what other Republicans who are more pro-choice than himself (like Sens. Specter, Collins, and Snowe) were willing to do.

And then he made himself look like an ass by caving to the will of Limbaugh.

I don't think anything Steele said there makes sense. The choice rests with the state, but also with the woman? What if they don't make the same choices?
