Good spirits to keep on hand as bases are:
Gin, Vodka, Rum, and Whiskey (Rye or Canadian is most common for highballs)

Basic mixers you can use for all sorts of drinks include:
Soda Water/Club Soda, Tonic Water, orange juice, cranberry juice, coke (or cola of your choice), ginger ale, 7UP or Sprite.

G&Ts, Vodka and cranberry, 7 and 7, Rye and Ginger Ale (which is delicious), and tons of other highballs can be made with these. Get some lemons and limes and you're totally set.

If you're willing to go beyond the standard bar spirits, you could get some liquers like Kahlua or some kind of orange liqueur (Contreau, Gran Marnier, or Triple Sec), bitters, and some brandy or bourbon so you can mix up Sidecars for the ladies, or Manhattans.

I'm about 20 minutes away, wish I had seen this earlier, heh.

Anything + Coke makes for a decent drink, my friends and I usually mix either Jack, rum, or vodka with it. I've heard good things about Sprite, too.

I was in Europe a few weeks ago visiting family, when my cousin took me to a bar and showed me this trick. This is the new shit that's sweeping Lithuania, and most of eastern Europe.

    It's a Sambucca shot

    You need:
1 Brandy snifter (those fat cups that taper to a small mouth to concentrate the smell)
1 Tumbler (a short, wide glass)
    1 Bend-y straw.
    Some napkins
    A Lighter.

    Directions:

    Preparation:
Pour the shot of sambucca into the snifter, and lay the snifter on its side on top of the tumbler. The shape of the snifter will let it rest, making this next part hands free.
Take your lighter, and light the sambucca in the snifter on fire. Slowly rotate the snifter, to warm up the sambucca. 10 seconds will heat the sambucca up to about room temp; it takes a long time before it gets 'too' hot so there is no need to rush.
Take the snifter off the top of the glass and pour the sambucca into the glass. With the snifter upside down, cover your glass with the mouthpiece of the snifter. This puts the fire out.

Now for the shot. Take the snifter off the glass, and, keeping the mouthpiece pointed down, let it sit on some napkins. Now, drink the shot. Warm sambucca is great.

Finally, take the snifter off the napkins, but keep it upside down. The mouthpiece may stick, but at least it's stuck to napkins and not your counter. Insert the bendy straw under, and into, the snifter. Inhale. It tastes like warm licorice air.

And thats it. This is what all the east europeans are doing these days. If you go to a bar or club and ask for sambucca, I swear to god, they will give you this crazy setup and a lighter. Most people will do about 3 of these, and be good for the night.
