My modem has always worked excellent until I borrowed a router from a friend. Now, my internet won't work UNLESS this router is connected, and its a piece of shit. Any ideas why?

Is it handing out DHCP to your network? Or do you have your own authorative server for that?
Test a theory if you want.... force reboot your modem with nothing connected (*ninja edit)(follow owner manual instructions for this, it varies) and then connect a different router.
If that doesn't work, and the router you want to replace it with supports it, try hoaxing it's MAC. Some routers will allow you to set a MAC address for them to emulate a different router in the case where your ISP requires your routers s/n and MAC address as well.
