    20 years to life

I know a serious question will mostly never get a serious answer here, but I wanted to lay out a situation that happened to me recently and see how most people would deal with it. (started posting this in spam but I know there isn't a chance in hell of getting a real answer there)

First I'll start by saying that I never feel safe around kids now days. I was at a restaurant the other day and I saw a little kid slip and bust her face right in front of me. But I don't feel safe looking at kids anymore let alone, touching them so I just stepped over her and kept on going.

Anyway, I had the day off the other day so I had time to work out in the garage. At some point this group of teenage girls walked right up my driveway and started talking to me.. Then proceeded to ask if they could come inside my house and have a drink. As a child I did shit like that all the time with random 'grown folk' in the neighborhood, but now I feel like I'd soon be greeted with a T.V crew. So I kicked them the fuck out. How do you guys react to kids?

    inb4...well, everything that is obvious.

Being a future educator, i've discussed this with friends before - its a real shame things are the way they are these days anymore. Like if you're in the grocery line and a kid in line is staring at you, you can't smile and wave at them anymore, especially if you're a guy, because you automatically must be a pedophile. With teenage girls, I've never felt awkward or like I was being monitored by my society, but then again, thats cause I'm only 20 so its not creepy, but give it 5 years and I'm sure I'll have to act like their breasts aren't hanging out of the top of their shirt when I pass by them in the mall.

I really shouldn't have used the word teenager since they were like...10...

But yeah, as a person who has to constantly deal with people at work and as of recent had to see kids on a daily bases because of spring things have become very annoying.

One of the things I never liked was all a kid has to say now is "He touched me" and cite a time and place you were alone with said kid, and suddenly the entire world looks at you differently. Doesn't matter how innocent you are, one lie from a child and your life is can be completely ruined.

People (not just kids) are dangerous. You never know when someone's going to stab you for no reason.

Not forcing yourself to deal with kids is the worst way to learn how to deal with kids. You probably should have helped that kid who slipped and fell. I'd hate to be part of the force in society that tells little kids that the world is never going to help them because it's too fucking terrified about injuring them somehow. It's pussifying our youth. I used to work with kids, I spent the equivalent of 5 years with them. I understand the paranoia of not wanting to be cornered into a 'kid said versus you said' liability so honestly you were probably right to tell those kids in your driveway to fuck off and get high in the park.

But don't treat kids like handgrenades; you knew which grownups you could scare shitless when you were growing up, right?

Kicking them out of your house was a smart move, though ignoring the kid who tripped was probably a bit much, you can always say "Are you OK?" without moving to interfere.

You're justified in basically avoiding any kind of situation where you could be accused of impropriety. Defending yourself from wrongful accusation is more and more important as society gets more and more out of line in terms of personal responsibility fading away. So while you want to do right, other people think "oh, that can be exploited..." and you end up in hot water.

The problem of being accused of certain crimes reversing "innocent until proven guilty" isn't a new development, though it's more common now, I suppose. My nostalgic perception is that it used to be people were trustworthy or not in a predictable way. Now, it's anybody's guess. But I know human nature hasn't changed that much in the past few decades.

You don't have to feel bad about refusing to render aid to some kid who falls and gets mildly hurt, perhaps - their parent(s) should be paying some attention. Not interfering is different than not caring, but you can't safely show that you're concerned... unfortunate, but that's the trend. Now if a child is drowning in a pool or whatever, and there's no-one else around for some reason, do something about it. There's a spectrum of reactions between CYA and being a horrible human being and I think you already know that.

A few people here have mentioned children's education or other work tracks where they certainly have some kind of liability training or certification - maybe you could talk to your boss about something for the office to deal with (even though it might be namby pamby legal idiocy) just for some ?

One of my neighbours wanted me to tutor her daughter mathematics and the first day she came to my apartment. I was like, stay the fuck outside (minus the cussing, of course) and let's go to your mother's. I try to avoid all instances w/ teenagers to avoid all the bs.

The only ones I'm comfortable w/ are my gf's sisters. They're like little sisters to me and protect them. Hopefully that won't bite me in the ass

If you're a man, stay away from kids.

If you're a woman, take them in your house and feel free to have sex with them too because the worst that can happen is a slap on the wrist. Susan B Anthony would roll over in her grave.

If there were any real feminist left in America, they would protest this sort of thing. Equal crime should deserve equal punishment.

When I used to babysit my niece(in law) for example, she would get scared staying away from home and want to sleep with me. I had the the foresight to make a bed for her in the living room and just sleep on the couch next to her, so that years later when my wife left I wouldn't have to deal with any accusations there. Sure enough, when my wife did leave she made every accusation she could, so my forward thinking paid off.

As far as the accusations my wife did make.. ya, there was no evidence to support them but it is also impossible to disprove something that can not be proved. If you can't absolutely prove you're innocent, you're guilty. I most likely would be in prison if she did not go bragging to her friends about how easy it was to "get me back". I feel kind of lucky, but at the same time angry they did not charge her for what she did. It could have seriously ruined my life in a worse way than what she was accusing me of..

Yeah! I should get a slap on the wrist when I have sex with kids too.

Man, my neighbor has 3 daughters (14, 15, and 16) that I've known for years. I usually see them coming home from school dressed in clubbing outfits and they always wave to me, blush, giggle, and look back like they're not talking about me. It's kind of uncomfortable at times, but it's all good since I usually have a few beers with their dad from time to time and knows I'm cool. We'll actually, I'm more interested in his wife (who I've mistook for one of the daughters before) but that's a story for another day... lol

But it's ok for differential treatment when it's their ass in the slammer! /eyeroll

The kid that fell, you shoulda seen if he was alright. Just asked, not touched in any way. The girls wanting to come inside? Yeah that's a recipe for disaster. Kids running around asking strangers to come inside their houses and people wonder why "oh why was my kid kidnapped?!". Failure of parenting.
