Hey, I'm in SLC too! I ate at 5 Guys for the first time a little over a week ago and quite enjoyed it (although their fries were probably better than the burger). And we do have an In-N-Out in Utah... Way down in St George (I ate there a week ago too lol, what a great weekend that was). I like my burger "animal style" there, look up ordering tips online whenever you get a chance to go there, there's a lot more than what the menu shows.
It's hard to crown a best, but here are a few I enjoy:
-Crown Burger, love that place!
-Best Burger in Bountiful.
-Training Table, but again the fries are the main reason for eating there. Probably won't find your winner there.
-Iggy's makes a Black Jack burger that I love.
-Up north a bit (Brigham City-ish) is a place called Maddox. There's a big restaurant that has great steaks, but they also have a small drive thru that has a good buffalo burger.

I've heard good things about a new hamburger joint at the Gateway, I think it is called "The Counter". Check it out, I would assume if you live 35 miles from where the In-n-Out is gonna be (which is practically my backyard) you can't be too far from the Gateway.

If I want a fantastic burger I make my own. I haven't found anywhere in Salt Lake (I live there too) that makes a fantastic burger, although there are some good ones that have already been mentioned, 5 guys etc. If you want I'll give you my recipe for Teriyaki Ginger burgers (my personal fav) or any of the others that I make at home.

what about the DB royale double truffle burger? with a patty stuffed with foie gras, short ribs and black truffles, it's probably the tastiest burger in the americas.

There is something I need help with, BG. I've been questing (for well over a year now) for the best hamburger I can get my hands on. This has entailed consuming at least two unique burgers a week, often more, since I began. I'm in a slump lately. I derive almost no satisfaction from the vehement consumption of a gnarly burger like I once did, yet I am constantly filled with the almost overflowing need to gormandize myself with one. Please, help me finish this quest and put an end to these constant desires once and for all by recommending the best burger (or how to create the best burger) you've ever encountered.
