I screwed up, it's not new legislation. The State Department is currently considering restricting import and export of ammunition for weapons considered "sniper rifles" which include the .50, the .308 Winchester and the 7.62 NATO among others.

It's still bogus, and I hope nothing comes of it.

    same thing.

    DC snipers
    used .223, a 22 caliber round.

Really stupid for them to restrict larger calibers, many of which are used for hunting. soon we'll be stuck with small caliber weapons not suitable for medium to large game. Then everyone will be up in arms about hunters not making clean kills.

Good thing you responded to the first 5 words of my post before making it to the end. Seems like you tripped over that large word legislation before giving up seeing as you missed this part :

Well, all I can say is buy a set of dies and hope they don't start in on primers, powder and brass.

    Good luck micro-stamping those.

    ...

But more seriously, folks, I don't think "archaic" weapons like bows or even swords will be banned, not because of any inherent lack or presence of danger, but because they are perceived as interesting, or "cool", instead of deadly. General folk who might be scared of a firearm are often intrigued by a bow or an edged weapon (other than a knife).

    Case in point,

Funny story. I got a call a while back that a local fencing team (a sport derived from rapier dueling) wanted some help recruiting at their university's club fair. I know the people involved from years ago, and they thought having some people who aren't students wandering through the crowds to pick up interest would be useful. I agreed to help, and ended up in a crowd of perhaps a thousand people holding a sign-up sheet and a four-foot German longsword.

Imagine if I had walked in there holding a single-shot, bolt action .22 rifle with a gun lock on it. There would have been a panicked riot, and I would have been arrested.

Instead, everyone around me was either oblivious or very interested, including a bunch of professors and one of the deans. No-one seemed scared or disturbed by the sword (despite it being sharp) and I had to refuse endless requests from people who wanted to wave it around.

For some reason, the weapon I held was not seen as a threat to public order. Unless that perception changes, and it certainly should not, I don't see there being a public outcry against bows and arrows, or swords, or trebuchets for that matter.

As to the practicality of carrying around large, edged weapons, well, that's another thing entirely... and I think those who argue in favor of citizens owning guns think of their guns in the same manner that all those people at the club fair thought of my sword.

Such a perception does not stop more ancient weaponry from being deadly or dangerous in the wrong hands - Jan. 20, 2009 Houston Chronicle story, anyone?

(found it: Woman charged in arrow assault / Injured victim, wounded suspect still hospitalized after office attack )

I'd like to start off by saying this is absolutely the fucking worst pro-gun/anti-legislation argument I have ever seen.

If the only gun deaths/injuries were results of firing range/hunting accidents, no one would give a shit about guns. Sadly, but expectedly, that's not the case. And a bow and arrow doesn't turn John Cho in to John Rambo, so don't even play like they're practically comparable in the slightest.

Guns are illegal in Chicago, and people die to guns there all the time.

9000-10000 gun homicides a year is statistically insignificant. More people die from just falling lol. A portion of those people would have died without access to guns, some of those people probably deserved it, and until you find a way to compare it to the amount of lives saved by guns it probably shouldn't be discussed at all.

Humans have a psychological need to be safe as important as any other need. Some of us are not Rambo IRL. It is no mistake that so many people like their guns.

Despite popular belief all guns are not illegal in Chicago.

Firing a bow and arrow takes training and discipline.

Any hoodlum can fire a gun.

Firing a bow and arrow accurately takes discipline. It takes no discipline to nock an arrow, pull back, and let it fly.

In 2005 22,400 people died from drug overdoses. Maybe we should ban narcotics. Oh, we have? Well how's that working out for us?

Do we really need a war on Guns too?

We need less Wars. Cars kill even more people. Ban Cars? Nah too inconvenient.
